2022 Outlook
Depth Chart
The Miami Dolphins will look a lot different this season, but one thing that's not changing is the team's leader behind center, Tua Tagovailoa. Tagovailoa has now started 21 games for the Dolphins throughout his first two seasons, totaling 27 touchdown passes with 15 interceptions and throwing for 4,427 yards. While his six rushing touchdowns have helped, those passing numbers just have not been enough to make him a viable weekly starting option in normal, single-quarterback fantasy formats.

The team did make significant changes this offseason, however, including adding superstar wide receiver Tyreek Hill. They did lose DeVante Parker, but the acquisition of Hill is perhaps the most significant non-quarterback move that any team made this past offseason. Hill immediately expands the team's offensive versatility as he's perhaps the NFL's best deep threat since Randy Moss. While it's true that Tagovailoa has not been much of a downfield thrower thus far in his career, it's worth considering that he hasn't had the receivers to make that a consistently viable option. We've seen players like Josh Allen take huge steps forward when he got an elite downfield threat upgrade with Stefon Diggs so it would not be at all surprising to see Tua start chucking the ball down the field at a higher rate.

Even with the addition of Hill, the continued development of 2021 breakout rookie Jaylen Waddle, and the addition of former Dallas Cowboys receiver Cedrick Wilson, Tua remains a tough player to trust in single quarterback formats. He's not much of a runner despite his six career rushing touchdowns and the Dolphins are likely to lean heavily on their running game, following the offensive philosophy that McDaniel will inevitably carry over from his days in San Francisco where he worked under Kyle Shanahan. Tagovailoa could be an interesting option in two-QB or superflex formats, however, as he will unquestionably have the best weapons of his career and he narrowly missed out on being a top-24 option in 2021.

Injury Tua Tagovailoa in good shape for 2023
GM confident in QB's health after meeting with specialists
By: Doug Orth | Mon Jan 16, 6:00 pm

Miami Dolphins
Dolphins GM Chris Grier says that in conversations about doctors about QB Tua Tagovailoa: "We fully expect him back next year, 100%, ready to go." Grier also said in speaking with consultants: "I don't think he's any more prone (to concussions) than anyone else." (NFL Network - Tom Pelissero)

FFToday's Take: HC Mike McDaniel expects to make it a priority to get Tagovailoa to avoid hits better moving forward, but it's not as if Tua's concussions this season were the result of him running too much. If he suffers another brain injury early in 2023, it will either be his third or fourth in less than a year. This story may not be over, as Tagovailoa or his family could decide an extended absence may be good for his long-term health. Either way, Miami would be smart to make sure it is very confident in its backup quarterback moving forward, be it Teddy Bridgewater, Skylar Thompson or someone else.

Injury Tua Tagovailoa ruled Out, Skylar Thompson likely to start
Teddy Bridgewater dealing with finger and knee issues
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Jan 11, 11:40 am

Miami Dolphins
Mike McDaniel says as of today they are preparing for rookie Skylar Thompson to start Sunday vs. Bills. Teddy Bridgewater is preparing himself to be ready for Sunday but only if he has no setbacks. So team is prepping Skylar as QB1 this week as of now. (Cameron Wolfe on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Tua Tagovailoa is still in concussion protocol and has been ruled out for the Dolphins Wildcard game against the Bills. It sounds like Thompson is going to get the start but there is still hope for Teddy to be named the starter at the end of the week. He "cannot afford any setbacks" according to head coach Mike McDaniel.

Injury Tua Tagovailoa likely to remain out in Week 18
Skylar Thompson, Teddy Bridgewater set to play vs. NYJ
By: Doug Orth | Mon Jan 2, 7:10 pm

Miami Dolphins
Dolphins’ HC Mike McDaniel told reporters that Tua Tagovailoa is not a part of the team’s QB plans for Sunday’s game vs. the Jets. Skylar Thompson and Teddy Bridgewater are. (ESPN - Adam Schefter)

FFToday's Take: It is the right thing to do, although it remains to be seen if Tua will be cleared to play in the wild-card round should Miami qualify for the postseason. Bridgewater will likely start if he can play through the finger injury he suffered in Week 17, which is far from a given. Given how good the Jets have been against perimeter receivers this year, it may be wise to downgrade Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle in the season finale.

Injury Tua back in concussion protocol
Second time this season
By: Doug Orth | Tue Dec 27, 1:15 am

Miami Dolphins
Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel said Tua Tagovailoa is in the concussion protocol. Tua met with doctors today and told them he had some symptoms per McDaniel. (NFL Network - Cameron Wolfe)

FFToday's Take: Depending on one's cynicism, one could say Tagovailoa has been concussed three times this year. However, the Week 3 blow to the head was considered a back issue before a Week 4 tackle gave him his first official concussion. Given the league's heightened sensitivity to concussions following the handling of Tagovailoa's issues earlier this season, it seems highly unlikely he will clear protocol in time for Week 17 versus the Patriots. Assuming that is the case, Teddy Bridgewater would likely draw the start.
