Dallas set to release Ezekiel Elliott Dallas will designate him a post-June 1st cut By: Mike Krueger | Wed Mar 15, 9:31 am

The Ezekiel Elliott era appears to be over in Dallas. Per a source close to the situation, the Cowboys are set to part ways with the two-time NFL rushing champ and the running back is preparing to start fresh with a new team. The move could come as soon as Wednesday afternoon when the league’s 2023 calendar officially begins at 3 p.m. and teams are required to be under the salary cap. (Dallas Star-Telegram)
FFToday's Take: The Cowboys could save close to $11 million against the cap if designate him a post-June 1st cut. Elliott's yards per carry plummeted to 3.8 last season as he dealt with a right knee injury but he kept his fantasy value afloat by scoring 12 rushing TDs. Tony Pollard would be the main running back for Dallas next season in this scenario but expect the Cowboys to bring in a complement. Zeke will be 28 in July.

FFToday's Take: Pollard was set to be a free agent but will be sticking in Dallas at least for the 2023 season if a longer term can't be worked out before mid-July. Pollard was Dallas' best running back last season (193-1007-9; 39-371-3) and for his career is averaging 5.1 yards per carry. Pollard finished as the RB10 last season despite splitting time with Ezekiel Elliott (RB23). The Cowboys are looking to retain Zeke but it will likely at a reduced cost.

Tony Pollard expected to be full strength for training camp Surgery completed on ankle By: Mike Krueger | Tue Jan 24, 3:22 pm

| |
Tony Pollard underwent surgery Tuesday on a broken left fibula and high ankle sprain he suffered in the Cowboys’ divisional round playoff loss to San Francisco, per source. Should be full strength well before training camp. Set to be an unrestricted free agent in March...
Want to clarify on the Tony Pollard surgery: the tightrope procedure was to correct the high ankle sprain regarding the ligaments. The fibula will heal with time; no casting. (Todd Archer on Twitter)
FFToday's Take: The Cowboys certainly want to have Pollard back but they've already got Ezekiel Elliott under a large contract. Perhaps a Zeke restructure would be enough to keep both backs in the Dallas backfield moving forward?

Pollard suffers high ankle sprain, fractured fibula Upcoming free agent By: Mike Krueger | Sun Jan 22, 11:06 pm

| |
Tony Pollard suffered a high ankle sprain & a fractured fibula in Sunday’s loss, a person w/ knowledge of the injury said. A timetable won’t be determined until surgery is completed, but a four-month timeframe is reasonable.
Big blow for soon to be free agent. (David Moore on Twitter)
FFToday's Take: Pollard demonstrated to be the Cowboys best running back in 2022 and will now hit the free agent market as a sought after piece assuming he's able to fully recover from his injuries tonight. The Cowboys will want him back but will they be able to re-sign him with an expensive Ezekiel Elliott also in the mix? The Cowboys would suffer a $12 million cap hit if they release the veteran RB.

Tony Pollard expected to be inactive tonight Thigh injury By: Mike Krueger | Thu Dec 29, 12:48 pm

| |
#Cowboys RB Tony Pollard (thigh) will be inactive tonight against the #Titans, per source. (Tom Pelissero on Twitter)
FFToday's Take: With Pollard out of the mix, that will leave Ezekiel Elliott as the starter and we should also see more of Malik Davis as well. If Davis assumes most of Pollard's role that would put him in Flex consideration even in a difficult matchup against the Titans.

Tony Pollard is dealing with a thigh ailment that held him out of practice on Monday and again on Tuesday. (dallascowboys.com)
FFToday's Take: Team owner Jerry Jones told 105.3 the Fan the Cowboys expect Pollard will play against the Titans. However, HC Mike McCarthy noted Tuesday that third-stringer Malik Davis will get the bulk of RB2 reps this week in the event a decision is made to rest Pollard in much the same way the team did Ezekiel Elliott a few weeks ago. Pollard will be in the high-end RB2 discussion if he plays against the Titans, while Davis would be a decent flex in deeper leagues if he Pollard sits.
