2025 Outlook

You knew the moment the Chargers hired Harbaugh, who then installed Greg Roman as offensive coordinator, that the team was going to want to run the ball. They had limited resources a year ago, however, and ended up relying on oft-injured J.K. Dobbins and complementary back Gus Edwards, a tandem that ran for 1,270 yards and 13 TDs. Neither one will return in 2025, with the team set to turn primary duties over to Hampton, a first-round pick in April's draft.

Hampton has a good combination of power and speed, and he's a capable receiver out the backfield, making him a true every-down option as a rookie. Last year at the University of North Carolina he ranked third in the nation in rush yards after contact (1,026) and scored a combined 30 touchdowns over his final two collegiate campaigns. He'll have to compete with Najee Harris throughout the season, so there will likely be some ebb and flow to his production from week to week as Roman leans on the hot hand, but Hampton is the back you want for the long haul in 2025.

Unlike fellow rookie Ashton Jeanty, who looks like he'll step right in and be the focal point of the offense in Las Vegas, Hampton is paired with a high-level quarterback and capable backfield mate. Still, it's fair to expect more from Hampton than the team got from Dobbins in the lead role last year, and it doesn't hurt that he plays for a coach that wants to control games with power football. Hampton is a borderline top 20 fantasy back and low-end RB2 with some juice.

Injury Najee Harris suffers Achilles injury in Week 3
Likely done for the season
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Sep 21, 7:40 pm

#Chargers RB Najee Harris suffered an Achilles injury, coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed. He’s having imaging now, but with an Achilles, there is not a lot of optimism. (Ian Rapoport on X)

FFToday's Take: Harris went down without any contact and had to be carted off the field. The Chargers are expecting to get confirmation of the injury tomorrow. Omarion Hampton went on to touch the ball 25 times in the Chargers victory over the Broncos. He's setup for a bellcow role the rest of the season. Backup Hassan Haskins has played two snaps through three games.

Injury Chargers take Najee Harris off NFI list
RB reportedly has a chance to play in Week 1
By: Doug Orth | Tue Aug 26, 11:40 pm

Sources: The #Chargers have activated RB Najee Harris (eye) off the NFI list, making him eligible to play as early as Week 1 vs the #Chiefs in Brazil. (Jordan Schultz)

FFToday's Take: About the only people who have a good idea about how this might play out are the Chargers' coaching and medical staff. The last time that Harris did anything of note on a football field was June. Making matters even worse, there is no way to know for sure how much of an effect the eye injury will have on Harris' ability to see the whole and/or his peripheral vision. As uneasy a feeling as it is, Omarion Hampton still very much deserves to be drafted in the third round of most 12-team drafts.

Injury Najee Harris likely to being training camp on NFI list
Eye injury
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Jul 16, 4:22 pm

#Chargers GM Joe Hortiz said Najee Harris (eye) will likely begin training camp on NFI. Harris is expected to report to The Bolt later today, per Hortiz. Harris has been receiving treatment from doctors at Stanford. (Daniel Popper on X)

FFToday's Take: 4th of July gone wrong. Harris' stay on the NFI list is expected to be short according to Ian Rapoport. The fact that Harris will be missing at least a portion of camp will knock his ADP down a bit for the time being as he competes with rookie Omarion Hampton for touches in the Chargers backfield.
