Depth Chart
Viewed by many as the best of a middling group of receivers in this year's draft, Smith-Njigba lands in Seattle and has been penciled in to play the slot. While in NFL terms, JSN couldn't ask for much more than to learn from two established pros like Metcalf and Lockett that still demand significant attention from defenses, in fantasy circles it's a bit of a Catch-22. Doubtless the rookie will see a lot of single coverage where his precise route running will serve him well, but when it comes to targets, he may lag behind the established duo -- as noted, the No. 3 receiver a year ago caught 27 passes.

Smith-Njigba missed nearly all last season with a hamstring injury, but he's only a year removed from leading Ohio State in receiving on a team that included Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave, both of whom were first-round picks a year ago. It's easy to see a scenario where JSN goes earlier than he should in fantasy drafts based on name value and the usual love of rookie receivers, but if you're counting on him delivering more than WR4 production you're likely overpaying. As a high-upside reserve, Smith-Njigba makes sense. As more, he's a risk.

Injury Jaxon Smith-Njigba expected to play Week 1
Wrist surgery two weeks ago
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Sep 6, 3:30 pm

Seattle Seahawks
Pete Carroll says WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba will play Sunday in Seahawks' opener vs Rams. Said the rookie "hasn't said a peep" about his surgically repaired wrist, and that there is no hesitation. (Greg Bell on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: JSN had wrist surgery roughly two weeks ago. There's no word yet if he will be limited. The rookie is shaping up to be a risky flex option against the Rams.

Injury IR stint unlikely for Jaxon Smith-Njigba
Rookie WR underwent wrist surgery recently
By: Doug Orth | Mon Aug 28, 11:00 pm

Seattle Seahawks
#Seahawks WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who recently underwent surgery to repair a small broken bone in his wrist, is expected to begin the season on the active roster, source said. No word yet on his availability for W1, but avoiding IR/designated to return is a sign he'll play soon. (NFL Network - Ian Rapoport)

FFToday's Take: While Smith-Njigba's already slim prospects of overtaking DK Metcalf or Tyler Lockett have virtually disappeared with the time he'll miss due to this injury, this news does bode well for him to be relevant in fantasy after Seattle's Week 5 bye. The rookie was reportedly the star of Seahawks' training camp, so expect Seattle to put as much on his plate as he can handle once he is fully healthy. Fantasy managers should not hesitate to buy the dip with him and stash him as a strong WR4 option.

Injury Jaxon Smith-Njigba will have wrist surgery today
Surgery will determine how long he will miss
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Aug 22, 11:39 am

Seattle Seahawks
Seahawks’ first-round pick Jaxon Smith-Njigba is undergoing wrist surgery today in Philadelphia, but still could have a chance to be ready for the start of the regular season, per sources. Surgery will determine how long he will miss. He hurt his wrist Saturday night vs. Dallas. He broke a bone in his wrist on the play in which he almost scored Saturday night. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Not great news. JSN has been a popular best-ball pick this summer and an intriguing pick in the middle rounds of redraft leagues. He's already carved out a role as the third receiver in Seattle and has shown enough flashes in camp that give him fantasy upside. We should get a better idea of this timeline after surgery.
