With T.J. Hockenson shipped to the Vikings mid-season, Detroit stitched together the position for the remainder of the year. Enter LaPorta, the 2nd round pick from the tight end farm of the Midwest, The University of Iowa. There have been 12 tight ends drafted from Iowa while Kirk Ferentz has been the coach and more than a few have gone on to become fantasy names. The Lions, and LaPorta hope to be the next. Historically, this is a position to avoid in fantasy if it's a rookie, especially one with good, but limited physical skills. LaPorta was extremely productive in college, but nothing leaps off the page. He was developed by some of the best tight end coaches in college, but will take time to find his place in the NFL. Look for him to learn and grow as the season goes on, and eventually solidify the position for the Lions, but there are plenty of other places to look for fantasy production.

Lions add veteran TE Zach Ertz Brock Wright suffers forearm injury By: Mike Krueger | Mon Jan 22, 11:13 am
| | Three-time Pro Bowl TE Zach Ertz is signing with the #Lions, per sources.
Ertz will start out on the practice squad, with plans to potentially elevate him for the NFC Championship Game. A boost for the final stretch. (Tom Pelissero on X)
FFToday's Take: Backup tight end Brock Wright suffered a forearm injury against the Bucs and starting tight end Sam LaPorta is playing through a knee injury. Ertz will likely be elevated from the practice squad in order to play for the Conference Championship game but won't be a fantasy factor unless LaPorta suffers an injury.
| Sam LaPorta trending towards playing against Rams Knee injury By: Mike Krueger | Sun Jan 14, 9:00 am
| | #Lions Pro Bowl rookie TE Sam LaPorta, who suffered a bone bruise and hyperextended knee, is trending in the right direction to play vs the #Rams, per me and @TomPelissero. Very limited in practice, LaPorta will likely wear a brace. But he intends to be out there with his team. (Ian Rapoport on X)
FFToday's Take: Travis Kelce played through a similar issue this season and was obviously limited. This situation makes LaPorta a risky fantasy play in Wildcard Weekend despite the great matchup against the Rams defense that's allowed the 7th most fantasy points to tight ends.
| Sam LaPorta practices Thursday, optimistic for WW Knee injury By: Mike Krueger | Thu Jan 11, 3:25 pm
| | Sam LaPorta said the knee is feeling better. He ran some routes today and is getting better every day. Looks like Sunday could be a possibility. (Tim Twentyman on X)
FFToday's Take: LaPorta is a key piece to the Detroit passing attack and will be needed if they want to beat the Rams. The Lions and Rams don't kickoff until Sunday night, so we might not know his status until the Inactives come out. We'll get more information tomorrow, but he'll likely be listed as Questionable after practice on Friday.
| Sam LaPorta facing uphill battle to play Suffered hyperextended knee and a bone bruise in Week 18 By: Doug Orth | Mon Jan 8, 7:00 pm
| | Lions Pro Bowl TE Sam LaPorta suffered a hyperextended knee and a bone bruise, source said after the MRI. He’s likely to miss some time, but as coach Dan Campbell said, not as bad as it could’ve been. (NFL Network - Ian Rapoport)
FFToday's Take: Campbell went on to say that LaPorta has an "outside chance" to play in the Wild Card Round. Fantasy managers should consider that possibility highly unlikely. In the extreme off-chance he can go, it is highly doubtful he would be very effective. Fantasy managers may remember last season when Detroit received huge contributions down the stretch from Brock Wright and James Mitchell, so no one should be surprised if one of those two players - assuming Wright (hip) can play - fills in nicely for LaPorta and ends up being a good DFS punt.
