Michael Thomas expected to land on PUP list
Off-season foot surgery

Saints’ WR Michael Thomas, who underwent off-season foot surgery, is expected to land on PUP, which will sideline him the first six weeks, per sources. Being that the Saints have an early bye, placing Thomas on PUP would sideline him for at least the first five games. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)
FFToday's Take: The Saints have a bye in Week 6, meaning Thomas would be eligible to play in Week 7 against the Seahawks. Thomas has battled injuries the last two seasons allowing him to play in only 7 games in 2020. If you're league has a deep bench, he's worthy of look in the later rounds. Marquez Callaway and Tre'Quan Smith will work on the outside while Thomas is away.
Jamies Winston named the starter in New Orleans
Strong second preseason game

Jameis Winston has been named the Saints' starting quarterback and will make his first start for New Orleans on opening day vs. Green Bay Packers, per sources. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)
FFToday's Take: Not it's official. Winston helped his causing by going 9-of-10 for 123 yards and two touchdowns to receiver Marquez Callaway. Killing Winston's fantasy value will be Taysom Hill who will still have a swiss-army-knife role in the offense and keep Winston in the QB2 conversation. This move does help all the Saints receivers and Alvin Kamara but it remains to be seen if Winston will target Kamara as much as Drew Brees did.
WR Tre'Quan Smith was back in practice Tuesday
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Aug 17, 1:00 pm
Saints WR Tre’Quan Smith was back in practice Tuesday after missing the past two weeks with a minor injury. Also back in practice Tuesday: safeties Marcus Williams and P. J. Williams. (Mike Triplett on Twitter)
FFToday's Take: Marquez Callaway has received the most pup during camp due to Smith's absence but neither of these two are going to be hot commodities in fantasy drafts given the shakiness of the quarterback situation. Either Smith or Callaway will return some WR3 value early in the season but it's difficult to project who that will be.

Misses eighth straight practice Thursday

FFToday's Take: This summer should have been Smith's opportunity to prove he was lead receiver material, especially with Michael Thomas recovering from surgery. Instead, Marquez Callaway appears to be establishing himself as the primary target in this offense. Whatever luster he had as a potential late-round sleeper is on life support now.
Michael Thomas lands on PUP
Ankle injury could keep WR out until Week 7

FFToday's Take: Thomas can come off the PUP list at any time but must miss the first six weeks if he remains there going into the season. Thomas' expected absence frees up roughly 25 percent of the team's target share to spread out among Alvin Kamara, Adam Trautman, Marquez Callaway and Deonte Harris. New Orleans is almost certain to lean more heavily on the run game (specifically Latavius Murray) as well. Thomas is a smart stash candidate in leagues with multiple IR spots in the early double-digit rounds, but managers in non-IR leagues are justified in letting him slip further than that.
