2023 Outlook

To say Joe Burrow has been a franchise altering player is an understatement. In his first three years in the NFL he's brought the Bengals to two straight AFC championships, (and a Super Bowl), and after decades of being an embarrassment, he's got the Bengals in annual championship contention. His rivalry with Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen is verging on the stuff of legend, and he's got the scheme and receiving talent to be a fantasy mainstay at the position for years to come.

Entering year four he has vaulted into the upper echelon of quarterbacks, but is there really much more room to climb the fantasy rankings? Despite rushing for ten touchdowns in his career, he has the lowest rushing yardage floor of all the players ranked above him. While there isn't much room to grow there, his passing numbers do have a shot to expand. The line improved slightly last year, giving up seven fewer sacks than 2021. Cinci spent big on Orlando Brown Jr. in free agency and the brutal state of their running game combined with having Ja'Marr Chase for a full season, means Burrow should continue the trend of setting career highs in pass attempts. The bottom line here is that Joe Cool should be somewhere in that top-5 mix at the end of the season, but he no longer comes at the discounted price he may have once had.

Injury Joe Burrow out for the season, wrist injury
Torn ligament in wrist
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Nov 17, 2:40 pm

Cincinnati Bengals
Bengals QB Joe Burrow suffered a torn wrist ligament that will likely require season-ending surgery, coach Zac Taylor said. (Ben Baby on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Another quarterback bites the dust. Burrow left Week 11 with a wrist issue and couldn't throw the ball on the sidelines without pain. Jake Browning will now take over as the starter. This is an obvious downgrade to the offense as a whole, specifically Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd. The offense will likely rely on Joe Mixon more moving forward.

Injury Tee Higgins misses second straight practice
Rib injury
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Oct 5, 4:28 pm

Cincinnati Bengals
Bengals WR Tee Higgins (ribs) did not practice for a second straight day. TE Irv Smith Jr. (hamstring) was a full participant for the first time since he suffered the injury. (Ben Baby on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: It's likely that Higgins is headed for the Inactive list on Sunday but we'll get a better idea of his status after practice Friday. Higgins and the entire Bengals offense has struggled through the first four weeks of the season as quarterback Joe Burrow deals with a calf injury. In his first four games, Higgins has yardage totals of 0, 89, 21 and 19.

Injury Joe Burrow will play in Week 5
Nagging calf injury likely big reason for woeful start
By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 2, 4:00 pm

Cincinnati Bengals
Zac Taylor says Joe Burrow will start and play this week against the Cardinals. (Kelsey Conway on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Cincinnati's offense scored a mere three touchdowns in four games and Burrow has failed to throw for one score in three of them. Watching him attempt to play through the preseason calf injury he re-tweaked in Week 2 has been tough at times. Unfortunately for the Bengals, their backup option is Jake Browning, who is a 27-year-old backup with one career pass in the NFL to his name. Even against the Cardinals in Week 5, Burrow should be considered no better than a middling QB2 option.

Injury Joe Burrow listed as Questionable for Monday night
Calf injury
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Sep 23, 12:48 pm

Cincinnati Bengals
Bengals are listing Joe Burrow as questionable for Monday night’s game versus the Rams due to his calf injury. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Burrow's strange cart ride with team owner Mike Brown yesterday and the signing of QB AJ McCarron today signal that there is some real question around Burrow's availability for Week 3. Hopefully we'll get more clarity before 1 pm Eastern on Sunday. If not, a backup plan of quarterbacks in the Monday night games include Baker Mayfield and Matthew Stafford.

Injury Joe Burrow in danger of missing Week 3?
Reportedly tweaked preseason calf injury
By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 18, 7:20 pm

Cincinnati Bengals
Bengals coach Zac Taylor on Joe Burrow's availability for Monday Night Football against the Rams: Hard to say. (ESPN.com - Ben Baby)

FFToday's Take: There has been some speculation that Burrow could go on IR, but it seems doubtful the 0-2 Bengals would go in that direction unless the injury was very serious. What is more likely is that Cincinnati will sit him in Week 3 against the Rams and reassess. Jake Browning would get the start if that ends up being the case. The fantasy values of everyone in this offense - specifically Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins - hang in the balance.
