The other piece of the remade Detroit backfield, Montgomery comes to the Lions to fill the Jamal Williams "thunder" role. Entering his 5th NFL season, Montgomery has proved to be a solid, if unspectacular back in the NFL. He's been durable, and incredibly consistent, putting up 1,000 total yards and at least seven touchdowns in each of his first four seasons. While his career rushing average leaves much to be desired, he's running behind the best line of his career, and won't have to carry the load with the presence of Gibbs. While this backfield will be an annoying committee at times, there is a TON of value to be had with Montgomery, and even if he sees a dip in total touches, he won't have those short yardage touchdowns vulture by his quarterback. While Gibbs is going to get the hype and attention, I think Montgomery can be an absolute steal, and a solid RB2 in multiple formats that you can add later in the draft.

True RBBC coming soon in Detroit? David Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs both healthy coming off bye By: Doug Orth | Mon Nov 6, 3:40 pm

| | For much of this season, the Lions haven’t needed to decide how to split snaps between running backs David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs because the two haven’t been healthy at the same time. But that’s about to change, and Lions head coach Dan Campbell says both players will get plenty of opportunities. Montgomery appears likely to return from his rib injury Sunday against the Chargers, and Gibbs is coming off his best game last week against the Raiders. Campbell was asked today how they’ll split the workload going forward.
“We know what David can do, but we know that Gibbs has gotten better every week, so we’re going to ask those guys to do the things they do well and that help our offense move the football,” Campbell said. “I don’t think, necessarily sitting here talking to you right now, that I see Gibbs getting 65 plays. I don’t see that. But he’s going to get his fair share now. We know what he can be and he’s growing. I think it’ll be a little bit by committee and make sure we get those guys their touches. Gibbs will get his touches.” (PFT - Michael David Smith)
FFToday's Take: Gibbs flashed in a big way over Detroit's last two games, although they both come with a bit of a caveat in that most of his production against the Ravens in Week 8 came after the game was decided and Week 9's impressive effort came against a Las Vegas defense that was worn out by the offense's ineptitude. The good news for managers of either player is that the schedule should provide plenty of opportunity for both: between now and Week 15, the Lions face only one team that ranks outside the top 10 in most fantasy points allowed to running backs. Gibbs should push for at least 10-plus touches weekly and handle the bulk of long down-and-distance opportunities while Montgomery takes the bulk of early-down and goal-line work.

| David Montgomery dealing with rib cartilage injury Departed early in Week 6 By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 16, 5:00 pm

| | Lions’ HC Dan Campbell said RB David Montgomery will be out for “a little bit” due to a rib cartilage injury. (ESPN - Adam Schefter)
FFToday's Take: X-rays came back negative Sunday night, but the expectation should be that Montgomery will miss at least Week 7 against the Ravens. Jahmyr Gibbs (hamstring) is reportedly feeling better, so fantasy managers should count on him and Craig Reynolds sharing the bulk of reps in Detroit's backfield - with the rookie serving as the 1A option. The Lions host Las Vegas on Monday night in Week 8, so hopefully Montgomery's status becomes more clear over the next 1 1/2 weeks.

| Jahmyr Gibbs sits Wednesday, Amon-Ra St. Brown limited Lions still short-handed By: Mike Krueger | Wed Oct 11, 4:02 pm

| | Lions’ RB Jahmyr Gibbs did not practice today due to his hamstring injury.
WR Amon-Ra St. Brown was listed as limited. (Adam Schefter on X)
FFToday's Take: The Lions were short-handed last week as Gibbs and St. Brown missed Week 5 but still managed to beat the Panthers 42-24. If Gibbs ends up missing again, we can expect another heavy dose of David Montgomery who saw 21 touches last week.

| Jahmyr Gibbs dowgraded to doubtful for Week 5 Hamstring injury By: Mike Krueger | Sat Oct 7, 4:11 pm

| | Lions downgraded RB Jahmyr Gibbs to doubtful for Sunday’s game vs. the Panthers. Lions also activated WR Jameson Williams from Exempt/Commissioner Permission and he is on track to make his season debut Sunday vs. Carolina. (Adam Schefter on X)
FFToday's Take: Late-week injuries are never a good sign. With Gibbs out of action, David Montgomery will continue to be a workhorse and is an easy RB1 against the Panthers. Craig Reynolds should step into the No.2 role but isn't really fantasy viable.

| David Montgomery expected to play Thursday night Thigh injury By: Mike Krueger | Thu Sep 28, 9:26 am

| | I've been informed by a team source that Decker and David Montgomery will suit up tonight and the NFL Network report from this morning is incorrect. (Justin Rogers on Twitter)
FFToday's Take: There was a report earlier this morning that Montgomery was going to sit, but that's not the case. Jahmyr Gibbs handled 18 touches last week against the Falcons with Montgomery on the sidelines. The two RBs should split work tonight against the Packers. Montgomery out-snapped Gibbs 85 to 51 during the first two games.

| David Montgomery likely to play Thursday night Thigh injury sidelined him in Week 3 By: Doug Orth | Tue Sep 26, 11:30 pm

| | Lions coach Dan Campbell said he's "starting to feel pretty good about" RB David Montgomery (thigh) and LT Taylor Decker (ankle) returning to play Thursday night against the #Packers.
(NFL Network - Tom Pelissero)
FFToday's Take: The Lions made the prudent move in resting Montgomery in Week 3, especially knowing they had a division game coming up on a short week. While the Packers have been a favorable fantasy matchup for running backs through three games, they have been effective in slowing them down in two of them. Nevertheless, Montgomery remains a solid RB2 option if he plays on Thursday. Expect Jahmyr Gibbs to return to his Week 1 and Week 2 workload of about 7-8 carries and five or so receptions.
