2023 Outlook
Depth Chart
A year ago, the Raiders were so unimpressed by Jacobs that they decided not to pick up his fifth-year option after he managed just 872 yards in 2021. That was a miscalculation. Under new head coach Josh McDaniels, Jacobs became the focal point of Las Vegas' offense, and he responded by setting career highs in carries (340), rushing yards (1,653 -- that led the NFL), and receiving yards (400). He also caught 53 passes and matched a personal best with a dozen touchdowns.

It was a redemptive season for the Alabama product, and not surprisingly the Raiders wound up having to use the franchise tag to keep him off the market. That's made things a bit dicey for 2023, as Jacobs and the team couldn't agree on a long-term deal, and there are rumblings that he could hold out through training camp and possibly into the regular season as well. There's also a possibility that his heavy workload last year, where he logged 393 combined touches, could cause durability problems, which is something we saw last year with Indianapolis Colts RB Jonathan Taylor.

Assuming he decides to sign his franchise tender and not miss regular season action, Jacobs enters 2023 as a solid RB1. While the issue of last year's heavy usage is real, he's only 25 and has been mostly durable during his four seasons.

Josh Jacobs ends holdout, agrees to one-year deal
Worth up to $12 million
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Aug 26, 12:19 pm

Las Vegas Raiders
The #Raiders and star RB Josh Jacobs have agreed to terms on an upgraded one-year deal worth up to $12 million, sources tell me and @RapSheet. The base value of Josh Jacobs’ deal is now $11.8 million, including some per-game roster bonuses - a significant upgrade from the $10.091 million tag. Jacobs can earn another $200K in incentives to reach the $12M max. (Tom Pelissero on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Jacobs had been slipping down the fantasy ranks this off-season during his holdout but will likely see his ADP rise despite him missing all of training camp. Given his usage last season (393 touches) he'll be one of the top running backs taken off the board in fantasy drafts over the next two weeks.

Injury Colts expect Jonathan Taylor back at camp this week
Will practice when cleared medically
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Aug 13, 2:47 pm

Indianapolis Colts
Shane Steichen reiterated Colts expect Jonathan Taylor back at camp this week. He practices when he's cleared medically. It was noteworthy last week when JT opted to do his rehab away from the team. That's not even remotely normal. (Mike Chappell on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Taylor, Josh Jacobs and J.K. Dobbins are a few of the high profile running backs that are squabbling with their team's management over contract issues. Taylor is also dealing with an ankle injury which further complicates matters. Even if Taylor reports back to the team, it seems like we have a long way to go before this situation is rectified.

Josh Jacobs not expected to report to training camp
Has yet to sign his franchise tag
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Jul 24, 9:26 am

Las Vegas Raiders
#Raiders RB Josh Jacobs, who hasn’t signed his franchise tender, was spotted this morning boarding a flight leaving Las Vegas. Jacobs won’t report for training camp Tuesday and has told people close to him that he doesn’t plan to return anytime soon. (Tom Pelissero on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: We know from experience that player holdouts typically resolve themselves without any time missed on the field. The running back market is in decline across the league to the point where the players are getting antsy. We'll see how long Jacobs is willing to go with his holdout. Stay tuned...

Josh Jacobs unable to get long-term deal done
Reigning rushing champ unlikely to take part in camp
By: Doug Orth | Mon Jul 17, 10:10 pm

Las Vegas Raiders
The #Raiders and star RB Josh Jacobs did not reach a deal despite extensive negotiations. Now it’s unclear when he’ll show to play on the tag. (NFL Network - Ian Rapoport)

FFToday's Take: Jacobs will not get fined for missing any practices since he did not sign the franchise tag. For his part, Jacobs has reportedly stated he could sit out training camp. He also mentioned earlier in the summer that one of his goals was to help his fellow running backs fight back against the devaluation of the position. Jacobs should see another huge workload in 2023 if/when he signs, but he is at increased risk of breaking down after handling 393 touches last season.
