2019 Outlook
Depth Chart
Austin Ekeler is one of the few change-of-pace backs behind a proven stud who could still end up producing quality standalone fantasy numbers in 2019. Ekeler finished the 2018 season as the No.27 fantasy running back and he did that while himself missing two games due to injury. He touched the ball 145 times on the season, which is roughly 10 times per game, and he produced impressive numbers both as a runner (5.2 yards per attempt) and as a pass catcher (10.4 yards per reception). He's now eclipsed five yards per rush and 10 yards per reception in each of his two NFL seasons, so those numbers appear to be more of a trend than a mirage.

Unfortunately, we've now seen that Ekeler's touches seem to be capped at around 17 even in games when Melvin Gordon is out with an injury. The team seemingly does not trust him to produce as a bell cow which does limit his upside potential of becoming an RB1 for fantasy, even on a weekly basis. While we have to like the weekly numbers he produces, the lack of upside does make him less appealing than some of the other backs who are being drafted near him that could potentially turn into every-down backs if things break right for them this season. Still, Ekeler makes for a nice, solid, high-floor play in deep leagues PPR leagues.

News From The Past 90 Days
Injury Mike Williams a gametime decision
Listed as questionable
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Sep 13, 2:22 pm

Chargers HC Anthony Lynn said Mike Williams (knee) will be a game-time decision. "I just need to see that he can go out and play, and not hurt himself," Lynn said. "He has a couple more days, so we'll go day by day." (Eric Williams on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Williams injured his knee in Week 1 and missed practice Wednesday and Thursday this week. Even if he plays, it will be hard to trust Williams in fantasy lineups as he could be limited. The Chargers will be leaning on Keenan Allen and Austin Ekeler on offense this week with Travis Benjamin an Dontrelle Inman seeing increased roles.

Melvin Gordon sorting through trade options
RB has no intention to show up Week 1
By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 2, 4:40 pm

Chargers running back Melvin Gordon does not plan to report for Week 1 as he sorts through potential trade options during his holdout, according to a source. My understanding is only a new development would bring him in. (ESPN - Jeremy Fowler)

FFToday's Take: As if it wasn't already obvious, the two sides remain far apart. If Gordon does miss the opener as expected, it's quite likely we may not hear from him again until around Week 10 since that is the time he has to report in order to count this season toward his free-agent clock. Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson figure to see roughly a 60/40 split of the backfield work in his absence. With that kind of workload, Ekeler should be a serviceable RB2 and Jackson should be a decent flex.

Melvin Gordon could sit out the season?
Reportedly prepared to sit out if no new deal is reached
By: Doug Orth | Thu Aug 15, 9:40 pm

Chargers and Melvin Gordon have not made progress towards a new deal, per sources. Gordon still wants to return in time for the regular season, but he is prepared to sit out if no new deal is reached, per source. (ESPN - Adam Schefter)

FFToday's Take: While it is still too early to panic (it is possible Gordon's camp is pushing this information to Schefter), there is certainly reason for concern. Owners drafting over the next couple weeks probably need to assume Gordon isn't going to be ready for the opener at the very least and need to wrap their minds around the possibility of not having him at all if they do take the plunge. Austin Ekeler needs to be moved up boards, while Justin Jackson may now move on the flex radar.

Melvin Gordon's agent requests trade
Team remains firm at their initial offer of approximately $10M/ year
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Aug 1, 11:30 am

Chargers RB Melvin Gordon's agent Damarius Bilbo tells me he requested a trade last wk for his client, after the team remained at their initial offer of aprox $10M/ year. GM Tom Telesco told Bilbo, Gordon is still family, but Bilbo was not given permission to seek trade partners. (Josina Anderson on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The two sides seem dug in. We'll see who blinks first. Gordon's ADP has fallen to RB12 with him being taken somewhere around the end of Round 2 in PPR leagues. The longer the holdout continues, the more his ADP will fall. Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson would handle rushing duties if Gordon's holdout extends into the season.

Melvin Gordon holdout could be lengthy
Proposals exchanged but no progress
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Jul 26, 7:45 am

While the two sides have exchanged proposals in recent days, running back Melvin Gordon's holdout now is expected to be prolonged and threatens to last into the season, per sources familiar with the talks. Gordon is in the final year of a rookie contract that is scheduled to pay him $5.6 million this season, but he wants a new deal to put him among the highest-paid running backs in the league. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Sounds like this negotiation will be going down to the wire and may not be resolved by the time most fantasy drafts are complete. Expect the ADP's of Austin Ekeler (10.08) and Justin Jackson (14.08) to rise as long as Gordon is on the sidelines.

Melvin Gordon unlikely to get extension
Chargers have "dug in" during negotiations
By: Doug Orth | Mon Jul 22, 9:00 pm

After speaking to a handful of sources, #Chargers’ stance is dug in with Melvin Gordon. Barring a change in his camp’s expectations, an extension isn’t coming soon. His threat to potentially hold out will be put to the test. The extension straddling the next CBA isn’t helping. (Yahoo! Sports - Charles Robinson)

FFToday's Take: Gordon made it a point during a recent interview that he wants to remain a Charger. Most likely, the situation will end up with him getting a bit of a boost in guaranteed money and not missing any regular-season games due to a holdout. Austin Ekeler would most likely see the majority of the touches if Gordon does miss time and would a serviceable RB2, while Justin Jackson would likely see enough work to be a strong flex option.

Melvin Gordon threatens training camp holdout
Gordon heading into the last year of his contract
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Jul 11, 10:00 am

Running back Melvin Gordon has informed the Los Angeles Chargers that, unless he receives a new contract, he will not report to training camp and he will demand a trade, his agent Fletcher Smith told ESPN. Gordon is scheduled to be heading into the last year of his contract, a fifth-year option, worth $5.6 million dollars. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: This agent report indicates Gordon wants to be paid along side the likes of Todd Gurley, David Johnson and Le'Veon Bell. While training camp holdouts tend to work themselves out, this one will be worth watching given Gordon's RB1 status. Austin Ekeler, Justin Jackson and Detrez Newsome are next up on the Chargers depth chart.
