After watching the likes of Aidan O'Connell, Gardner Minshew, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Brian Hoyer start games for the franchise over the last two seasons, incoming head coach Pete Carroll looked to his past to acquire Geno Smith, who started for Carroll during his final two years on the job in Seattle. Whatever you may think of Smith, he's a notch or three above O'Connell, Minshew, and Hoyer, and though Garoppolo had some good years with the 49ers, he was always more of a game manager, and that was before age and injury took their toll.
As for Smith, he resurrected his career with the Seahawks, taking over when they moved on from Russell Wilson before the 2022 season and throwing for 4,282 yards, 30 TDs, and 11 INTs. In two seasons since, he averaged 3,972 yards, 20 TDs, and 12 INTs. That's decent production but bear in mind that came with DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba at his disposal. There's nobody in Las Vegas on JSN or Metcalf's level, and expectations are the offense will lean heavily on the running game.
Already a fringe fantasy reserve last year, Smith again finds himself on the borders of ownability heading into 2025. He has one dynamic threat in Brock Bowers, and first-round pick Ashton Jeanty could do some damage as a receiver out of the backfield, but this isn't an offense built to air it out. At best, Smith looks like a low-end QB2, likely someone you'd pair with a risky QB1 as a parachute in case your starting quarterback didn't pan out.

Geno Smith headed back to the Jets Jets and Raiders do late-round pick swap for QB By: Mike Krueger | Tue Mar 10, 2:21 pm

| | After a nine-year separation, the New York Jets and quarterback Geno Smith are together again.
Instead of waiting for him to be released, the Jets traded for Smith on Tuesday, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Jets are sending a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for Smith and a 2026 seventh-rounder, sources told Schefter. (ESPN)
FFToday's Take: The Raiders were expected to release the veteran QB but instead found a trading partner. It's being reported that the Raiders will be paying the bulk of Geno's 2026 salary. The Vikings were also interested in Geno's services. This move could spell the end for Justin Fields who has one year left on his deal in New York. Geno may have some low-end QB2 value for the upcoming season but expect the Jets to address the position via the draft in April or in 2027.

| Raiders are moving on from QB Geno Smith One and done for Geno in Las Vegas By: Mike Krueger | Fri Mar 6, 11:03 am

| | ESPN sources: the Raiders are releasing last season’s starting quarterback Geno Smith, barring a trade before the start of the new league year. By releasing Smith, the Raiders will open up $8M in salary cap space while taking on $18.5M in dead money. (Adam Schefter on X)
FFToday's Take: The Raiders offense was dismal last season ranking last in total yards per game (245.2) and 28th in passing yards per game (167.7). Their expected to take QB Fernando Mendoza at No.1 in the upcoming 2026 draft making Geno expendable. Expect the Raiders to add a veteran QB to pair with the rookie. Smith (35) will likely land at one of the many teams scrambling for a quarterback this off-season.
