NFL Mock Draft - Final!
by Frank Coyle
Courtesy of Draft Insiders Digest
4/25/03

1. Cincinnati (2-14) - Carson Palmer - QB - USC
The Bengals look to get this guy signed before the draft process begins on Saturday. They hope he is the franchise type passer that they have been looking for for a decade. Palmer put it all together as a senior and showed the development to rank with the most refined passers to enter the league over the past decade. Palmer will backup veteran Jon Kitna initially but the starting job will be his within a short period and maybe during his rookie season if he continues to process nicely.
Alternate Pick: Charles Rogers - WR - Michigan St.

2. Detroit - (3-13) - Charles Rogers - WR - Michigan St.
The Lions will most likely focus on offense early under first year head coach Steve Mariucci with Rogers on the board. Rogers is the best player in this draft class and a player who can help young passer Joey Harrington take a huge step up as a starting pro. This pick has been a no brainer since the season ended. He has a rare combination of size, speed and agility and has the package to become a special NFL impact player.
Alternate Pick: DE Terrell Suggs - Arizona St.

3. Houston - (4-12) - Andre Johnson - WR - Miami
GM Charley Casserly holds the key to the top five with this selection. They were set to take Terrell Suggs for their attack linebacker spot in their 3-4 set. His poor workout makes that questionable while big play wideout Andre Johnson finished with a terrific workout that pushes him into the top five picks. They have listened to several offers to trade back and remain open to that possibility. Johnson gives them the playmaker critical for young passer David Carr to continue to develop.
Alternate Pick: DE Terrell Suggs - Arizona St.

4. Chicago - (4-12) - Terrell Suggs - DE - Arizona St.
The Bears have several major needs and look to address one here. They also have entertained moving back, though few clubs are interested in moving up. They have major needs along their front four and secondary. Suggs gives them the edge rushed needed. Either of the big defensive tackles Jimmy Kennedy or Dewayne Robertson would fill a major need inside to protect inside backer Brian Urlacher from blockers. Terence Newman will warrant consideration here in a trouble area. They expect to address the QB spot later on the first day.
Alternate Pick: CB Terence Newman - Kansas St.

5. Dallas - (5-11) - Terence Newman - CB - K-State
The Cowboys are hoping for impact at this selection and will consider either of the top two defensive tackles or Newman if available. They also have entertained moving back but the four clubs with two first round picks have not shown a great interest of moving up. Boys like corner Newman but would prefer Terrell Suggs. Newman addresses a major need on defense. Either defensive tackle would give them much need size along a smallish front seven that is not the type of unit that head coach Bill Parcells wants for the long term.
Alternate Pick: DT Jimmy Kennedy - Penn St.

6. Arizona (5-11) - Jimmy Kennedy - DT - Penn St.
The Cards have many major needs entering this draft with defense and wide receiver the primary areas. They would love to get a chance at Andre Johnson, but that would only happen if they moved up. They still have big needs along their front four and will debate the possibilities of Terrell Suggs, Jimmy Kennedy and Dewayne Robertson. Suggs is a possibility after poor workouts and would be a quick decision. Either tackle would be a welcome addition on a line that is unsettled despite high picks over recent drafts.
Alternate Pick: WR Andre Johnson - Miami

7. Minnesota - (6-10) - Dewayne Robertson - DT - Kentucky
The Vikings are at the 7th spot again this year and hope to land the defensive tackle they lost at the last minute last spring when a late trade changed the top ten picks. They look to help DT Chris Hovan with a big body tackle to anchor the inside. Both Kennedy and Robertson fill that need and would be excellent additions here. They also will consider corner Marcus Trufant here for a secondary that gets toasted weekly. Trufant is a well developed blue chip cover man and would be excellent value here, though certainly a surprise.
Alternate Pick: DT Jimmy Kennedy - Penn St.

8. Jacksonville (6-10) - Marcus Trufant - CB - Washington St.
The Jaguars have made nice strides rebuilding their defense with free agent additions of Hugh Douglas and Mike Peterson. They are not done yet and a shutdown corner would be an excellent addition here and Trufant fits the bill perfectly. They could surprise and go with QB Byron Leftwich here, though they may be willing to wait until the 2nd round to address their QB of the future.
Alternate Pick: Byron Leftwich - QB - Marshall

9. Carolina - (7-9) - Byron Leftwich - QB - Marshall
The Panthers signed several impressive free agent additions for their offense this offseason, but still not have a QB for the future. Leftwich has slipped out of the top five due to the leg injury that forced him to miss the critical postseason. There is a possibility they could go with Kyle Boller here. They also have needs along their offensive line and should have their choice of all or most of the available talent.
Alternate Pick: Jordan Gross - OT - Utah

10. Baltimore (7-9) - Kyle Boller - QB - Cal
The Ravens look to land a top starting QB in this draft at this spot. They like both Leftwich and Boller, though would prefer Boller for their system. They also have major needs at defensive tackle and could surprise if either Kennedy or Robertson was still available.
Alternate Pick: Byron Leftwich - QB - Marshall

11. Seattle (7-9) - Johnathan Sullivan- DT - Georgia
The Seahawks have major needs as usual on defense and will address this unit early and often. They need tackles and should address this area in the first round with the expected run to happen quickly. They like both Johnathan Sullivan and Kevin Williams and will most likely pick one of the defenders. They have also talked trade with the Patriots for this pick but do not want to move back beyond the 14th pick currently.
Alternate Pick: Kevin Williams - DT - Oklahoma St.

12. St. Louis - (7-9) - Andre Woolfolk - CB - Oklahoma
The Rams hope to rebuild their secondary in this draft and could select two corners early in the draft process. With the top two expected to be gone, Woolfolk would be the highest rated cover man on the board. He is a fine athlete with a big upside and a defender who would meet the Rams most pressing need. If they go another direction, they could select LB Boss Bailey who is a top ten athlete who falls to the mid first round area. They could use all their top selections on cornerbacks and wideouts.
Alternate Pick: Boss Bailey - LB - Georgia

13. New York (Washington 7-9) - Eric Steinbach - OL - Iowa
The Jets are at the crossroads in this draft and look to add two early starters with both their top picks. They want a defensive tackle and like both Johnathan Sullivan and Kevin Williams. LB Boss Bailey would fit nicely here also. Eric Steinbach may be the most developed prospect in this class for the NFL and is a player an offense can count on to land a starting job early in his career. He is battled tested and a fine value here, though probably not a popular selection. They will then consider a defensive tackle, wideout or cover man with the 22nd pick.
Alternate Pick: Kevin Williams - DT - Oklahoma St.

14. New England (Buffalo 8-8) - Jordan Gross - OT - Utah
The Patriots have the leverage to move up in any round in this draft with 13 overall picks and two #1 and #3 selections. They have several pressing needs especially along their defensive line and secondary. They like tackle Kennedy and Robertson but would have to move up into the top 8 picks. They like Sullivan but would also have to move up a few picks. Their strategy in the middle of the first round could dictate how the round shakes out. They may settle for a top offensive tackle with legitimate needs at that position. They would like to address their defense here with tackle and corner high on their list.
Alternate Pick: Andre Woolfolk - CB - Oklahoma

15. San Diego - (8-8) - Boss Bailey - LB - Georgia
The Chargers are looking to strengthen their defense overall with specific needs at tackle, cornerback and linebacker. They are hoping one of the top tackles is still on the board somewhat questionable with the expected run from the 4th thru 14th selection. They like both Sullivan and Williams but both could be gone. Bailey would be a fine addition especially with the release of Junior Seau. They have big needs at corner and would love to select Woolfolk but he is expected to go a few picks in front of this spot.
Alternate Pick: Kevin Williams - DT - Oklahoma St.

16. Kansas City - (8-8) - E.J. Henderson - LB - Maryland
The Chiefs will attempt to continue to rebuild their defense and are most interested in inside LB E.J. Henderson and corner Andre Woolfolk. Henderson addresses a major need on the inside while Woolfolk would be the much needed cover man in the secondary.
Alternate Pick: Andre Woolfolk- CB - Oklahoma

17. New Orleans (9-7) - William Joseph - DT - Miami
The Saints have major needs on defense at tackle, cornerback and inside linebacker. They love E.J. Henderson, but he is most likely gone at this pick. They need both tackles and corners and are hoping one of the top 5-6 prospects is available. They also have Andre Woolfolk earmarked here, but he also will most likely be selected a few choices before this spot.
Alternate Pick: E.J. Henderson - LB - Maryland

18. New Orleans (Miami 9-7) - Sammy Davis - CB - Tex A&M
The Saints most likely will use both picks on defensive players. They have needs on the corner that must be addressed and waiting to the 2nd round would be risky for a high quality performer. Davis is moving up quickly after a very good postseason and will not get out of the first round. Pierce would be a compromise if they lose Henderson early in the round.
Alternate Pick: Terry Pierce - LB - Kansas St.

19. New England - (9-7) - Michael Haynes - DE - Penn St.
The Pats may not sit at this position with many picks that will allow them to move up. They want a premier defensive lineman, cornerback and possible backer. They could surprise and select a big receiver here like Bryant Johnson or Kelley Washington.
Alternate Pick: Bryant Johnson - WR - Penn St.

20. Denver - (9-7) - Chris Kelsay - DE - Nebraska
The Broncos hope to address their front four with this pick and most likely an end like Chris Kelsay, Michael Haynes or Jerome McDougle. They want to move Trevor Pryce back inside to tackle and a top outside pass rusher is the highest priority at this point. Kelsay is a fast rising prospect with well developed skills to be an every down defender.
Alternate Pick: Jerome McDougle - DE - Miami

21. Cleveland (9-7) - Kwame Harris - OT - Stanford
The Browns have several major needs with OT, LB and DL all high on their wish list. They have pressing needs along their front four with pass rushing the key quality sought in a prospect. They had major turnover in their LBing unit and look to address that area They love Boss Bailey but he most likely goes early in the round. One of the top offensive tackles would address a major need, though defense is the higher priority entering the draft. Butch Davis has a special spot for Miami players.
Alternate Pick: Jerome McDougle - DE - Miami

22. New York - (9-7) - Kevin Williams - DT - Oklahoma St.
The Jets may have to settle for the best defensive tackle available here if it is not addressed at the 13th spot. Williams or Joseph could be available here, though a risky assumption. They may have their choice of the third receiver in the draft here with Kelley Washington and Bryant Johnson both expected to be on the board.
Alternate Pick: Kelley Washington - WR - Tennessee

23. Buffalo (Atlanta 9-6-1) - Ty Warren - DT - Texas A&M
The Bills hope to continue to address their defense with an emphasis on their front four. They need a run stuffer and Ty Warren can fill that role immediately. They also have needs at safety, receiver and offensive tackle that most likely are addressed on the first day.
Alternate Pick: Rien Long - DT - Washington St.

24. Indianapolis - (10-6) - Julian Battle - CB - Tennessee
The Colts defense looks to address cornerback and front four early in the draft. Their biggest need is on the corner and they have earmarked defenders like Sammy Davis, Eugene Wilson and Julian Battle to address. Battle may be the best available here and gives them a big cover man for matchup purposes.
Alternate Pick: Sammy Davis - CB - Texas A&M

25. New York (10-6) - Jerome McDougle - DE - Miami
The Giants want to address their front four early, but could be the victim of the early run on tackles in particular. They could easily select an end like Haynes or McDougle. If one of the top three offensive linemen is on the board, Gross, Harris or Steinbach, the Giants will not hesitate to select him for their major need on the rightside.
Alternate Pick: Kwame Harris - OT - Stanford

26. San Francisco - (10-6) - Kelley Washington - WR - Ten
The 49ers would like to address several key areas, DL, wide receiver and secondary. The front four may have to wait to the 2nd or 3rd round unless several players slide to this selection. They also want to add a playmaker at wide receiver with both Kelley Washington and Bryant Johnson fitting their type of pass catcher.
Alternate Pick: Kenny Peterson - DE - Ohio St.

27. Pittsburgh - (10-5-1) - Troy Polamalu - S - USC
The Steelers have major needs in their secondary and may add both a corner and safety on the first day. Polamalu is coming off a huge workout and could address one of their needs. They also like CB Sammy Davis very much, but he is expected to go earlier. With Jerome Bettis clearly on the downside of his career a selection of Willis McGahee or Musa Smith is possible here and one of the surprises of the first round.
Alternate Pick: Sammy Davis - CB - Texas A&M

28. Tennessee - (11-5) - Bryant Johnson - WR - Penn St.
The Titans are looking to select a playmaker at wide receiver and have ear marked both Bryant Johnson and Kelley Washington with this pick. They are hoping either of this top receivers falls to this pick. They could also select a corner here like Sammy Davis or Eugene Wilson.
Alternate Pick: Kelley Washington - WR - Tennessee

29. Green Bay - (12-4) - Kenny Peterson - DE - Ohio St.
The Packers are hoping one of the top four QBs is still on the board either Kyle Boller or Chris Simms. Their front four also has major needs as does their linebacker unit. They would like to add a defender like Terry Pierce or Kenny Peterson here on a unit that slipped noticeably in the '02 season.
Alternate Pick: Chris Simms - QB - Texas

30. Philadelphia - (12-4) - Dewayne White - DE - Lousiville
The Eagles are interested in adding several need areas, defensive end, tight end or receiver. They hope to land one of the top five DEs here, either McDougle, Kelsay or Haynes. They could surprise and select LB Terry Pierce or TE Jason Witten here who addresses major needs on those units.
Alternate Pick: Bryant Johnson - WR - Penn St.

31. Oakland - (11-5) - Willis McGahee - RB - Miami
The Raiders have age at many key positions including QB, WR and running back. They have been one of the most unpredictable organizations in sports. With a premier athlete like Willis McGahee possibility being available here, Al Davis would not hesitate to grab the headlines once again at the close of the first round.
Alternate Pick: Ty Warren - DT - Texas A&M

32. Oakland (Tampa Bucs 12-4) - Chris Simms - QB - Texas
The Raiders are hoping to grab a highly rated passer with Rich Gannon turning 38 next season. Davis has always shown a likeness to lefty passers and Simms could be his man at this selection. At the 32nd spot, they also like one of the top receivers with Kelley Washington or Bryant Johnson getting consideration if available. Faine would address problems in the pivot.
Alternate Pick: Jeff Faine - OC - Notre Dame
