Running Backs

Must Start:

Cedric Benson Cedric Benson v. KC – If you think Kansas City was embarrassed by the Texans, wait until you see what the Bears do to them. Projected score: 122 – 0. There will be lots of clock killing in the second half and opportunities for Benson to rack up some nice yardage and touchdown numbers.

Derrick Ward v. GB – Ward looked great filling in for Brandon Jacobs, running with confidence and elusiveness. If, God forbid, Lorenzen gets the start due to Manning’s injury, expect Ward to be handed the ball a lot. If Manning is healthy, Ward will do even better not having to face eight men in the box all day.

Adrian Peterson v. DET – The future is now. Chester Taylor’s unfortunate injury nicely handed the reins to AP and he did what the Vikings were hoping he would. Detroit made the Raiders offense look good in Week One so the Minnesota running game should have no problem getting some traction. Keeping Mike Martz’ pass-happy offense off the field will encourage the Vikings to run repeatedly.

DeShaun Foster v. HOU – Foster had a solid first week and is holding on to his starting job for the moment. Against the Texans, even a guy in a job share starts to look pretty good.

Chris Brown v. IND – Another running back splitting time, but sometimes you have to use what is available to you. How many owners know that Mr. Chris Brown is the current NFL rushing leader? Indy made the Saints look silly and will, to a certain extent, do the same to the Titans. Once Tennessee gets down by double digits, LenWhale White isn’t the back TEN coaches will expect to be in the game catching balls and scampering for 20-yard gains.

Grab A Gatorade:

Laurence Maroney Laurence Maroney v. SD – New England is definitely limiting Maroney’s workload. He was on the field for only 30 snaps last week while Sammy Morris and Kevin Faulk took the other half of the workload. The Chargers will make it difficult for Maroney to do much with his limited touches. Even last week his 20 carries only got him 72 yards and no touchdowns. He’ll be lucky to get those numbers again this week.

Ladell Betts @ PHI – Before the season started, Betts was occasionally getting drafted ahead of Clinton Portis. One week into the season Portis is looking healthy and more explosive than Betts. Owners can’t afford to start Betts right now and maybe not for the rest of the season.

Tatum Bell v. MIN – Mike Martz has been known to throw the ball around a little bit during his years in coaching. The Minnesota defense is pretty good at stopping the run. So, unless Bell gets lucky on a swing pass, he won’t be worth starting this week.

Ahman Green @ CAR – The Carolina defense is a bit tougher than that of the Chiefs. Inexplicably, Ron Dayne is still around stealing carries. But the Houston organization is known for making good personnel decisions. So I am sure there is a reason. Yes, that was sarcasm.

Willis McGahee v. NYJ – McGahee looked horrible last week and it doesn’t get easier against the Jets. Losing your top blocker in Jonathan Ogden certainly won’t help either. The whole Baltimore offense is looking a lot like last year’s Oakland Raiders. Avoid all Ravens and check to make sure Art Shell isn’t on the Baltimore sidelines.
