2018 Outlook
Depth Chart
Many were predicting a breakout season for Raiders quarterback Derek Carr heading into the 2017 season, as the young passer was coming off of the best season of his career in 2016. Four weeks into the season, however, that breakout season fell apart as Carr suffered a transverse process fracture in his back, which Carr later said was actually three broken bones. While he played through the pain and discomfort, Carr hurt fantasy owners badly as back spasms caused erratic play, causing him to barely finish as even a QB2 despite having one of the league's best wide receiver tandems in Michael Crabtree and Amari Cooper.

While he should be much healthier after a full offseason to heal, back injuries often creep back up on athletes and can cause problems. What's worse is, NFL teams often mask those injuries on the injury report by being vague about the location and severity. This can be difficult on fantasy owners as we don't have a good idea whether or not the player is dealing with an injury or if he simply had a bad string of games. Additionally, Carr will now be without his favorite target Michael Crabtree and will be learning a completely new offensive system, making it easy to see why Carr is going undrafted in many standard formats.

Oakland did add Jordy Nelson and Martavis Bryant, along with Doug Martin who has made an impact in the passing game in the past, but it's hard to argue that those players will make a significant enough impact on Carr to make him anything more than a streaming option at the quarterback position this season.

Derek Carr relationship with team "fractured?"
Report says Raiders QB has lost leadership role
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Oct 23, 11:25 am

Oakland Raiders
Confidence in quarterback Derek Carr is diminishing among Raiders players, Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic reports. Carr's relationship with his teammates is "fractured" according to Thompson. Carr crying after injuring his arm in the Week 6 27-3 loss to the Seahawks was noted as part of the reason teammates might have trouble looking at Carr as the leader of the team. (SI)

FFToday's Take: The 2014 second-round pick is the only one of Oakland's three key young pieces from last season remaining. All-Pro pass rusher Khalil Mack was traded to the Bears at the start of September and on Monday wide receiver Amari Cooper was moved to the Cowboys. Carr has been a low-end QB2 so far this season, with one huge Week 4 game standing tall among the others. He's on the QB2 radar this week but isn't trustworthy in standard leagues.

Jon Gruden again critical of Derek Carr's play
Head coach calls late throw "too aggressive"
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Sep 25, 12:30 pm

Oakland Raiders
On Sunday night, Derek Carr defended his decision to throw in the back left corner of the end zone, trying to connect with Martavis Bryant on a go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter. He said it was a decision he would make again based on the matchup and Bryant’s ability to secure passes in the air. Raiders coach Jon Gruden disagreed, especially with the pass coming on first down and other opportunities had that pass fallen incomplete or been thrown away. “I thought we were too aggressive,” Gruden said in his Monday press conference. “I think at times he is trying too hard. We will talk about that extensively here in the next couple of hours, but I thought he played really good under some very tough circumstances. I think sometimes he needs to learn a little bit more patience, and I think he will. (NBC Sports (Bay Area))

FFToday's Take: It's actually refreshing to hear a coach publicly disagree with his QB, even if it comes from Gruden, but this portends some possible acrimony in the coming weeks with the Raiders desperately seeking their first win. Carr's job is probably safe because A.J. McCarron is their backup, and he had a dreadful preseason.

Injury Browns make it official: Mayfield to start Week 4
Tyrod Taylor in concussion protocol
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Sep 24, 12:45 pm

Cleveland Browns
Coach Hue Jackson named his No. 1 overall pick the starting quarterback on Monday, replacing Tyrod Taylor, who was knocked out Thursday night's 21-17 victory over the Jets with a concussion. Baker Mayfield will make his first NFL start Sunday in Oakland, against the Derek Carr-led Raiders, becoming the 30th quarterback to start a game for the Browns since 1999. (Cleveland Plain Dealer)

FFToday's Take: Mayfield under center has a better shot to invoke some life into the Browns offense including Jarvis Landry and tight end David Njoku. Mayfield is a worthy QB streamer this week against the Raiders defense that just gave up 3 touchdowns to Ryan Tannehill.
