Robert Mathis suffers torn Achilles
Reigning sack champion out for season
By: Doug Orth | Sep 8 2014, 3:05 pm

Multiple league sources are reporting OLB Robert Mathis suffered a torn Achilles last week while working out on his own and his season is now over. Mathis had three games remaining on his suspension for violating the PED policy. The 33-year-old Mathis had 19.5 sacks in 2013, his first without Dwight Freeney. Because the injury happened away from the team facility, the Colts could place Mathis on the non-football injury list and withhold this year’s money, setting the stage to part ways with an aging and banged-up player this offseason. FFToday's Take: Week 1 is usually reserved for the first wave of season-ending injuries that occur on the field, but has been replaced by the release of Ray Rice and this bombshell. The Colts struggled to consistently get pressure against Denver on Sunday night and will be forced to play without one of its few defensive playmakers the rest of the season. Bjoern Werner and Erik Walden will remain the starters at outside linebacker until further notice.
