Just as fantasy owners know the pros and cons of McCaffrey, they know the potential upside that comes with selecting whoever lands the backup role in San Francisco. The logic is easy to follow. The 49ers are among the league's most committed running teams, and if their 30-year-old featured back is forced out of action it's next man up, meaning McCaffrey's backup could be in line for 20-plus touches a week. The downside, of course, is that when CMC is healthy, the club's RB2 will likely see only a small handful of opportunities most games.

Black, a third-round pick out of Indiana, is the early leader in the clubhouse, but I stress the word "early." Shanahan will afford no special treatment simply because the team used a third-round pick -- just ask Trey Sermon -- and Black could easily be squeezed out during the preseason by holdover Isaac Guerendo or fellow rookie Jordan James. Whoever earns the job should be targeted by McCaffrey owners as a handcuff to hedge their bets.
