Emeka Egbuka's situation in Tampa Bay reminds me of the circumstances that greeted fellow Ohio State alum Jaxon Smith-Njigba's arrival in Seattle: both ended up on teams with two solid vets playing ahead of them. In JSN's case, it was DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett blocking his upside. Despite Metcalf and Lockett's presence, JSN still carved out a 63/628/4 stat line. Not eyepopping, but enough to signal his potential. The same should be expected for Egbuka. The biggest concern is Egbuka played 75 percent of his snaps in the slot at Ohio State last season -- the same position as Godwin. How will those snaps be divvied up in 2025?
In the short-term, expect Egbuka's production to be limited because of Evans and Godwin's presence and continued dominance. But in the long-term, he should become a productive fantasy stud that sees him ascend to a low-end WR2 before long, similar to JSN's trajectory. What does that mean for 2025? It means taking a flyer on Egbuka late in your draft with the hope that he gets enough playing time to put up numbers, or keep him on ice in case one of the vets ahead of him misses time due to injury.

 Chris Godwin unlikely to play until October
Will avoid PUP list to start the season

|  | Sources: Buccaneers plan to activate WR Chris Godwin off the Physically Unable to Perform list and have him on their 53-man roster to start the season, but only to begin his ramp-up process for games, not to immediately play in them. Godwin still is unlikely to play until October as he continues recovering from the fractured ankle he suffered in Week 7 vs. the Ravens last season. He is expected to start practicing in Week 2, but the team thinks he is right where he should be at this time and is pleased with his recovery. (Adam Schefter on X)
FFToday's Take: Good to an update on the Godwin situation. Week 5 against the Seahawks seems like the game to target for his return. How long it takes him to get up to full speed will be a different story. In the meantime, expect rookie Emeka Egbuka to occupy a starting spot opposite Mike Evans. Egbuka's ADP (WR37, half-PPR) will continue to rise as we get set for a big draft weekend.
| Jalen McMillan likely to miss half of the season
Suffered "severely sprained neck" in Week 2 preseason game

| | Jalen McMillan will be placed on injured reserve after suffering a “severely sprained neck,” against the Steelers and could be out past the Bucs Week 9 bye week, the Times has learned. Team still feels fortunate the injury wasn’t worse and have depth at WR starting with Mike Evans and Emeka Egbuka. Chris Godwin will eventually return from a dislocated ankle. FFToday's Take: As bad as this news is, McMillan was inches away from suffering a much worse injury. With Chris Godwin (ankle) still not practicing, the path is clear for Mike Evans and Emeka Egbuka to carry the bulk of the passing game through at least September. While McMillan's absence may free up another receiver to contribute (Sterling Shepard?), expect Cade Otton to see a few more targets than he would have received otherwise.

QB and GM thrilled with rookie's readiness

| | The Bucs surprised many when they used the No. 19 pick in April to select WR Emeka Egbuka. They'd just re-signed Chris Godwin to a three-year contract, they still have veteran Mike Evans playing well and their 2024 third-round pick, Jalen McMillan, caught seven touchdown passes in their final five games of the season. Some wondered if the Egbuka pick meant they were worried about Godwin's recovery from his season-ending ankle injury. But again, they just gave Godwin a three-year deal, so they couldn't be that worried. My takeaway from my time in Tampa is that the Egbuka pick wasn't about Godwin as much as it's about Evans, who turns 32 later this month and has reached the point of his career when he's deciding year-to-year how long he wants to continue. It was also about the need for depth at that position. But more than anything, it was about Egbuka, who is the talk of training camp. (ESPN.com - Dan Graziano)
FFToday's Take: Graziano goes on to say that while the Bucs aren't counting out Godwin for Week 1, they believe there's a chance he could miss a couple of games at the start of the season. He also expects Egbuka to be a big part of things for whatever time Godwin is out, and maybe even once he's back. Godwin appears to be a total wild card at this point, if only because he will need some time to ramp up and become a full-time player, and that's only if he doesn't have a setback. Egbuka is not a player fantasy managers should feel obligated to reach for (at least not yet), but he should be going much higher than his current Round 9-10 ADP.

Dislocated ankle

Bucs veterans report to camp Tuesday with the first workout scheduled Wednesday morning. Godwin, 29, will work with trainers rehabbing the injury he sustained in Week 7 last season against the Ravens. (Tampa Bay Times)
FFToday's Take: Godwin will be eased into camp and likely see his workload increase as the Summer moves along. GM Jason Licht said "we're hopeful it's Week 1 but nobody can guarantee that". It wouldn't be a shock if Godwin missed the first couple weeks but that's just speculation. Rookie Emeka Egbuka is capable of filling Godwin's role and the team also has Jalen McMillan fourth on the depth chart.
