Question marks surround Penix once again entering a football season. The oft-injured signal-caller tore his ACL for the third time in his football career in Week 11 last season. That marked his fifth major injury dating back to his college days: a broken collarbone, a separated shoulder, and the three reconstructive knee surgeries. At some point, one will have to assume the cumulative effects of all those injuries will begin to take their toll.
With Tua's injury history, we can reasonably expect that Penix will get a shot at some point during the second half of the season, assuming his rehab continues in a positive way as been reported. Penix shares Tua's injury history and lack of mobility, but his superior arm strength is tailor made for Atlanta's offense. That potentially gives him a higher ceiling of the two, but he obviously remains an undraftable commodity at this point. Penix's return is worth monitoring, but keep expectations in check.

Michael Penix Jr. gets starting nod for Week 3 QB to make season debut vs. Green Bay By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 21, 10:00 pm

| | Michael Penix Jr. has been named starting quarterback for Thursday's game. (Falcons.com)
FFToday's Take: Penix's return may not be the biggest news there in terms of the fantasy quarterback discussion, but it should be a huge boon for the fantasy fortunes of Drake London. Last year's WR8 (points per game) isn't even one of the top 50 receivers in fantasy scoring through two weeks with Cooper Rush and Jack Strand throwing him the ball. Penix leaned heavily on London last year when both players were healthy, so it would seem reasonable that Penix's return should spike London's production.

| Tua Tagovailoa Out for Week 1, Cooper Rush to start Atlanta rolling with QB3 to begin the season By: Mike Krueger | Fri Sep 11, 1:24 pm

| | QB Tua Tagovailoa has been ruled OUT of Sunday's game.
Billy Bowman, Michael Penix, Cam Williams are also out.
Za'Darius Smith is questionable. (Tori McElhaney on X)
FFToday's Take: Michael Penix Jr. isn't ready to play. Tua reportedly injured his oblique in practice yesterday and has also been bothered by back spams this summer. That leaves Cooper Rush to start Week 1 for the Falcons against the Steelers. This isn't great news for the Falcons offense as a whole, so while they are still worthy of being in your lineup, we should temper expectations for Drake London, Kyle Pitts and Bijan Robinson.

| Tua limited Thursday with an oblique injury Cooper Rush took all the first team reps By: Mike Krueger | Thu Sep 10, 4:16 pm

| | Atlanta Falcons quarterback Tua Tagovailoa sustained an oblique injury in practice Thursday and was listed as a limited participant, according to the team's official injury report. During the media viewing portion of practice, Tagovailoa threw a pass during a drill, then immediately grabbed at his back before sitting down on the grass. He did get up quickly and jogged off. (ESPN)
FFToday's Take: Watching the video it seemed more like a back spasm, but either way, this was the first time Cooper Rush got significant practice time with the starting unit. According to him, he took all the first team reps in the team portion of practice. Michael Penix Jr. (knee) is not ready for game action, meaning Rush would get the start if Tua can't go. None of this good news for Drake London and Kyle Pitts.

| Tua Tagovailoa to start Week 1 for the Falcons Penix on the mend from ACL injury By: Mike Krueger | Mon Sep 7, 8:10 am

| | Sources: Tua Tagovailoa has been named the Falcons’ starting quarterback for next Sunday’s regular-season opener in Pittsburgh vs. the Steelers. (Adam Schefter on X)
FFToday's Take: It's still unclear whether or not Tua won the job or the fact that Michael Penix Jr. just isn't healthy enough to play. I'd bet on the latter and won't be shocked to see Penix start games at some point this season. Both of these quarterbacks are off the fantasy radar in 1QB leagues and have marginal value in 2QB or Superflex leagues.
