Johnston's time in the NFL has been uneven, and 2025 was a continuation of that. There was some buzz heading into last year following a solid second season (55-711-8), and the noise got louder when the TCU alum rattled off 22 receptions, 337 yards, and 4 TDs in September. It would be downhill from there, however, as from Weeks 5 to 14, he'd top 50 yards in a game only once. Johnston rallied in his final two games with 202 yards and a TD, but his final numbers last season were almost a carbon copy of 2024: 51 receptions, 735 yards, 8 touchdowns.
Despite a lack of statistical growth, the Chargers picked up the fifth-year option on Johnston's contract, which tells you they believe that the wideout hasn't reached his ceiling, yet. We'll see. When Johnston is making plays downfield it's easy to envision him as an annual 1,000-plus-yard, 10-touchdown guy. When he goes weeks without making a play, less so. The physical ability is there, and with Allen gone there should be no shortage of opportunities. After failing to break out last season, odds are Johnston's value will be depressed. As a WR5, his upside makes him well worth taking a chance on.
