2023 Outlook
Depth Chart
While veterans Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson are likely to enter the season as the biggest parts of this Miami backfield committee, it's third-round NFL Draft pick Devon Achane who is really the most intriguing player from a fantasy standpoint.

Undersized at only 5'9" and under 190 lbs, Achane was an impressive all-purpose back in college. He rushed for over 1,100 yards with 11 touchdowns and caught 36 passes in his final collegiate season at Texas A&M. He then blazed in the testing process leading up to the draft, checking in with a 4.32-second forty-yard dash time. This running back archetype is exactly what the Dolphins have been acquiring clones of over the past two offseasons and there's an outside chance that the team will opt to move on from either Mostert or Wilson if they see enough from Achane during camp.

Achane will likely will start the season on the bench, but could be the player who possesses the most upside in the entire backfield. We've seen enough from Mostert and Wilson to know that both players are likely to cannibalize one another's touches while also being high injury risks. The Dolphins didn't really "feature" Mostert or Wilson in 2022, so they're obviously not sold on either of them being a true bell cow, which means that the opportunity is there for someone like Achane to impress and potentially become that guy.

We also know that head coach Mike McDaniel likes to rotate his backfield and keep players fresh, so there's a real possibility that Achane sees some playing time very early and he might be the team's best pass-catching weapon out of the backfield right away. Achane is the back with the lowest floor of this trio, but he's also the player who has the highest ceiling. If you're taking him as your RB4 or RB5, then you're likely solid enough at the position that you don't need him to be a starter right away. In that case, he's a great lottery ticket-type back who could hit big for you, but could also just fizzle out without costing you much of anything on draft day.

News From The Past 90 Days
Injury Devon Achane expected to be Inactive Week 1
Raheem Mostert, Salvon Ahmed expected to handle RB work
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Sep 10, 9:20 am

Miami Dolphins
Just mentioned on @NFLGameDay: #Dolphins rookie RB Devon Achane is expected to be inactive today against the #Chargers. The third-round pick from Texas A&M missed time in camp with a shoulder injury and has some rust. Raheem Mostert and Salvon Ahmed will carry the load. (Tom Pelissero on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The Dolphins backfield has been narrowed down to Mostert and Ahmed which makes Mostert a solid RB2 play this week in a high-total (51.5) game against the Chargers who gave up the 7th most fantasy to running backs last season in Half-PPR leagues.

Injury Jeff Wilson, Jalen Ramsey land on IR, out 4 games
Miami dealing with RB injuries
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Aug 31, 10:33 am

Miami Dolphins
The #Dolphins placed CB Jalen Ramsey, OL Robert Jones and RB Jeff Wilson Jr. on injured reserve. They’re out at least four games; Ramsey is expected back in December. (Tom Pelissero on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Wilson is dealing with an undisclosed injury which we'll likely learn more about in the coming days. This will boost the short-term value of Raheem Mostert who is likely to start for the Dolphins Week 1 against the Chargers. Devon Achane (shoulder) and Salvin Ahmed are also dealing with issues but have a chance to be active for Week 1.

Injury Devon Achane week-to-week with shoulder injury
May not be ready for Week 1
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Aug 21, 12:04 pm

Miami Dolphins
McDaniel said Devon Achane is "week to week." Said he avoided anything major. McDaniel doesn't commit to Achane playing in Week 1. "I think that far out, I'm not really being an issue. I'm more worried about how he's going to look at the end of this week." (Adam Beasley on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Achane injured his shoulder in the Dolphins Week 2 preseason game against the Texans. The rookie running back is battling for touches with veterans Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson, Salvon Ahmed and Myles Gaskin. Despite the injury, Achane will be a late-round upside play for leagues with deep benches.

NYJ won't go crazy in Dalvin Cook pursuit
RB had "good" visit with the team over the weekend
By: Doug Orth | Mon Jul 31, 5:30 pm

Miami Dolphins
Dalvin Cook visited the Jets (on July 30). He left without a contract. Saleh called it a “good” visit, but Jets aren’t “pushing” or “pressing” the issue. Basically, there’s no timeline for a signing. Cook needs to do what’s best for his family. The back’s desire to play for the Dolphins is pretty well known. It’s also important to know the Jets don’t need Cook. He’d be a welcome addition, but it’s a case of luxury, not necessity. Any contract offer from Joe Douglas will reflect that. (SNY - Connor Hughes)

FFToday's Take: The Dolphins may not be the betting favor to land Cook, but they probably should be. Signing with the Jets maybe allows Cook to enjoy a fairly sizeable early-season role, but he would almost certainly be stuck in an even timeshare - at best - with Breece_Hall. With Miami, Cook would go to his hometown town and likely assume a lead-back role ahead of rookie Devon Achane, Jeff Wilson and Raheem Mostert. Stay tuned.

Dolphins make offer to Dalvin Cook
Free agent RB not likely to sign anytime soon
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Jun 27, 7:40 pm

Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins have made an offer to free agent running back Dalvin Cook, but he’s holding off on a decision for now, a source close to the situation told The Miami Herald. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported this week that Cook has generated significant interest and has offers from multiple teams. But Cook apparently doesn’t have an offer that fully meets his financial expectations. And he’s willing to wait awhile, perhaps beyond the start of training camp, according to Pelissero. (Miami Herald)

FFToday's Take: Other teams reportedly interested in Cook include the New York Jets, Patriots and Broncos. Cook has expressed casual interest this off-season in the Dolphins who already have six running backs on the roster including Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson and rookie Devon Achane. The free agent running back market is flush with veterans including Ezekiel Elliot, Kareem Hunt and Leonard Fournette.
