2021 Outlook
Depth Chart
The folks in Jacksonville are hyped about their new QB, and we get it. At 6-5 he boasts prototypical height, has a strong, accurate arm, and the athleticism to not just make plays with his legs, but extend plays and escape from pressure, which may be his most important attribute in Year 1. Simply put, the guy's a winner who has lost only two games since the start of high school. He's a leader and a playmaker who averaged just under 30 TD passes per season at Clemson. For all the above reasons, it's hard to imagine a scenario where Lawrence isn't under center for the Jags in Week 1, no matter how well former starter Gardner Minshew plays.

However, Lawrence is an NFL rookie playing at QB. All indications are he has the work ethic and the game IQ to fully grasp the offense and perform under pressure. But make no mistake, he will struggle, and new HC Urban Meyer isn't going to be afraid to sit his generational talent if he struggles too much, especially with Minshew standing next to him on the sideline. It's also important for fantasy owners to understand who they're dealing with here. Meyer is, and always has been, a run-first guy. The same goes for OC Darrell Bevell, and even passing game coordinator Brian Schottenheimer. Don't be surprised if all three of those guys, trying to protect and develop "The Franchise" for the long term and lean heavily on those run tendencies in 2021.

Of course, there is reason to be high on Lawrence, for fantasy purposes and otherwise. He's a better runner of the football than he's given credit for, and Meyer has a reputation for scheming to the strengths of his QB dating all the way back to Alex Smith at Utah. The RPO will be part of this attack, and with that, Lawrence becomes a legitimate dual threat. But the rookie learning curve and a run-first offense are going to put a cap on his ceiling out of the gate. I'm calling him a mid to low end QB2 for now who could be worth a shot in the second half of the season if he progresses as expected.

Jags trade Gardner Minshew to Eagles
For a conditional 2022 sixth-round pick
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Aug 28, 11:10 am

Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jacksonville Jaguars have traded quarterback Gardner Minshew II to the Philadelphia Eagles for a conditional 2022 sixth-round pick, it was announced Saturday. The sixth-round pick could rise to a fifth-rounder if Minshew is involved in 50% of the plays in three games this season, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: This will move C.J. Beathard into a backup role behind Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville while Minshew joins Jalen Hurts and Joe Flacco in Philadelphia. Minshew is likely to be the third-string quarterback and isn't a real threat to Jalen Hurts' status as the top dog.

Jags announce Trevor Lawrence will start Week 1
Week 1 vs. Houston

Jacksonville Jaguars
Jaguars officially announced that No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence will start Week 1 vs. Houston. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: It was inevitable but now it's official. The Jags offense has looked less than spectacular this preseason and have now lost rookie RB Travis Etienne to a foot injury while D.J. Chark nurses a finger injury. Lawrence is looking like a fantasy QB2 with some spiked-week opportunities as Jacksonville plays from behind most weeks.

Trevor Lawrence taking care of business
"Showing what you want from a future elite quarterback"
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Aug 12, 5:25 pm

Jacksonville Jaguars
There's really no harm to HC Urban Meyer's approach. The biggest concern about Trevor Lawrence in this training camp is whether he's progressing in the offense and showing what you want from a future elite quarterback. He's doing that. He also appears in synch with receivers - and is making big-time plays each day. When, exactly, he is named the starter is a detail by comparison. (Jaguars.com)

FFToday's Take: The media is apparently getting antsy for Meyer to name a starting quarterback. Lawrence is going to get the job over Gardner Minshew, and it would frankly be a bit surprising if Minshew ever sees the field in the regular season again for the Jags barring a heavy dose of garbage time, the occasional kneel-down or injury to Lawrence. The No. 1 pick has low-end QB1 upside but is a much better value as a high-end QB2.

Injury D.J. Chark has finger surgery, expected to be ready Week 1
Hairline fracture
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Aug 8, 12:56 pm

Jacksonville Jaguars
Jaguars’ WR D.J. Chark underwent surgery for a hairline fracture of his finger, but Jacksonville HC Urban Meyer said he still expects Chark to play in Week 1 vs Houston. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: This is going to limit Chark's ability to build chemistry with rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Marvin Jones, Laviska Shenault and Chark are expected to be the top three receivers in Jacksonville but who ends up being the best fantasy asset is difficult to project.
