2022 Outlook
Depth Chart
In 2021 fantasy owners were excited to get a look at what the ultra-athletic Irv Smith could do after finally being out of the shadow of Kyle Rudolph. Well that all went up in smoke in the final preseason game, as Smith suffered a knee injury that eventually cost him the entire season. As he rolls it back in 2022, Smith is expected to be a full go by training camp. Entering a contract year, with a more dynamic passing game, a healthy Smith should function as the 3rd receiver in this offense. More athletically gifted than Tyler Higbee who saw 85 targets in a similar offense, and Tyler Conklin who had 87 targets for Minnesota last year, Smith could have a 60-catch floor which would put him in the upper TE2 tier, with upside for more.

Irv Smith not limited due to thumb injury
HC: Smith's lack of snaps due to game plan
By: Doug Orth | Tue Sep 13, 11:55 pm

Minnesota Vikings
TE Johnny Mundt played 40 snaps to Irv Smith Jr.'s 19. O'Connell today: "Irv is going to have a major role for us." But it appears the snap count was based on game plan, not health. "Those guys all know how we operate. We're a game-to-game, week-to-week operation." (ESPN - Kevin Seifert)

FFToday's Take: So much for the excuse that Smith's usage in the opener had to do with the time he missed in camp due to his injured thumb. While the expectation should be that he is much more involved going forward, O'Connell's current stance makes it almost impossible to start Smith with any confidence right now. As such, he belongs on fantasy benches for now.

Injury TE Irv Smith has surgery on injured thumb
Has not been ruled out for the opener
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Aug 2, 2:05 pm

Minnesota Vikings
#Vikings TE Irv Smith suffered a thumb injury yesterday and had surgery today, coach Kevin O'Connell told reporters. He has not been ruled out for the opener. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Irv missed all of last season with a knee injury and is now getting off to a rocky start in 2022 with a thumb injury that is likely to cost him the rest of the pre-season. It sounds likely that he'll be ready for Week 1 but missing practice time in August is not ideal especially when the Vikings are installing a new offense.

Injury Irv Smith expected to be full-go at the beginning of camp
Vikings TE coming off knee injury
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Jul 26, 12:45 pm

Minnesota Vikings
Kevin O’Connell says he expects Irv Smith to be full-go at the beginning of training camp, after the #Vikings took it slow with him this spring. They’ll evaluate him every day, but liked how he looked with the group of players who reported early this week, O’Connell said. (Ben Goessling on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Smith missed the 2021 season with a knee injury so it's a positive sign that he's not expected to be limited when camp begins. With Tyler Conklin now with the Jets and the Vikings expected to be a little more pass-happy, Irv is a nice late-round target at the tight end position.
