2023 Outlook
Depth Chart
Although it was overshadowed by Cooper Kupp's monster season, Samuel put up huge numbers of his own in 2021: 77 receptions, 1,770 combined yards, and 14 touchdowns. With Lance set to take over as QB1, and viewed by many as an upgrade over Jimmy G in terms of dynamic quarterback play, the thought was Samuel would be a top-10 fantasy wideout. Instead, the former Gamecock experienced regression across the board before a high ankle sprain effectively ended his season on Dec. 11.

Heading into 2023, expectations are significantly reduced. With a true lead back like McCaffrey in place, Samuel's usage as a runner will continue to dip, and he's yet to prove he can be effective as a receiver in the red zone with just 12 touchdowns among his 223 career grabs. It might also be time to worry about his extremely physical style of play and the toll it's already taken on his body; he sat out four games last year and has now missed 15 total in four seasons.

There's a chance that all these things might combine to knock the talented wideout even further down draft boards than he should be, and if that's the case, Samuel certainly offers enough upside to warrant selecting him. Whether he deserves to be considered a top-20 fantasy receiver is up for debate, though, and that wasn't the case a year ago.

Injury Brock Purdy clears concussion protocol, will start in Wk 8
No injury designation
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Oct 28, 1:48 pm

San Francisco
49ers’ QB Brock Purdy has cleared concussion protocol and has no injury designation against the Cincinnati Bengals. (Adam Schefter on X)

FFToday's Take: Purdy breaks the mold and clears the concussion protocol in time to play the following week. His matchup isn't the best against a Bengals defense that's middle-of-the-pack against fantasy quarterbacks and he won't have Deebo Samuel (shoulder). However, the threat of McCaffrey, Aiyuk and Kittle given Purdy enough weapons to land in low-end QB1 / high-end QB2 territory.

Injury Brock Purdy in concussion protocol, unlikely to play Wk 8
Sam Darnold likely to start
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Oct 25, 3:52 pm

San Francisco
Kyle Shanahan said Brock Purdy is now in concussion protocols. Purdy is now unlikely to play Sunday vs. the Bengals based on this trend: No NFL player placed into concussion protocol this season has played the same week. The last player to be in concussion protocol who played the same week was 2022, when Kenny Pickett had a concussion in week 6 and was cleared to play in week 7. (Adam Schefter on X)

FFToday's Take: Purdy reportedly starting having symptoms on the plain ride back from Minnesota. As Schefter points out, it's going to be difficult for him to get through protocol in time to play against the Bengals. We can't expect much from Sam Darnold is his first start this season and he's likely to be without Deebo Samuel (shoulder).

Injury Deebo Samuel out next two games, shoulder injury
Christian McCaffrey questionable for Week 7
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Oct 21, 5:00 pm

San Francisco
49ers’ HC Kyle Shanahan told reporters that WR Deebo Samuel is dealing with a hairline fracture in his shoulder and will be out the next two games leading up to the team’s bye week. RB Christian McCaffrey is questionable for Week 7. (Adam Schefter on X)

FFToday's Take: The 49ers have a bye in Week 9 so the earliest we could see Deebo back on the field is Week 10 against the Jaguars. In the meantime, expect Brandon Aiyuk to be the top wideout in San Francisco with increased opportunities for Jauan Jennings. McCaffrey appears to be trending towards playing Monday night against the Vikings but remains a gametime decision.

Injury McCaffrey, Deebo miss practice on Friday
49ers play Monday night
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Oct 20, 6:40 pm

San Francisco
No practice again today for a second straight day for Christian McCaffrey (oblique), Deebo Samuel (shoulder) and Trent Williams (ankle). 49ers play Monday night in Minnesota. (Adam Schefter on X)

FFToday's Take: The 49ers face the Vikings Monday night, so they'll get in another practice on Saturday. It would be help their chances of playing if they can at least get in a limited session tomorrow. The backfield would be some mix of Elijah Mitchell and Jordan Mason if McCaffrey were to miss Stay tuned.

Injury CMC, Deebo hurt in Week 6 loss
RB undergoing MRI on oblique; WR day-to-day with shoulder issue
By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 16, 6:30 pm

San Francisco
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan gives injury updates on RB Christian McCaffrey (oblique/ribs) and WR Deebo Samuel (shoulder): CMC is currently having an MRI. Deebo will be day-to-day. (NFL Network - Clayton Holloway)

FFToday's Take: It appears as though Samuel should be expected to play against Minnesota next Monday night, but the same may not be true for CMC. McCaffrey tried to play through the injury before leaving the game for good in the fourth quarter. Oblique injuries are notoriously slow to heal, so the 49ers could exercise caution and sit him for at least a week in a game they should win. Assuming that ends up being the case, it sounds as though Shanahan still prefers Elijah Mitchell over Jordan Mason as the preferred top back if CMC is sidelined.

Injury Deebo Samuel expected to play
Listed as questionable, ribs & knee
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Oct 1, 7:10 am

San Francisco
49ers’ WR Deebo Samuel, listed as questionable for Sunday due to a rib and knee injury, is expected to play vs. the Cardinals barring any pre-game setbacks, per source. 49ers’ WR Jauan Jennings (shin) and RB Elijah Mitchell are not expected to play Sunday vs. Cardinals. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Deebo got in a limited practice session on Friday after missing practice Wednesday and Thursday. You might ding his upside but otherwise feel comfortable with him in your starting lineup. Expect to see more of Jordan Mason as the backup running back behind Christian McCaffrey.

Injury Aiyuk expected to play, Deebo, Elijah Mitchell Questionable
49ers injury report
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Sep 29, 6:28 pm

San Francisco
49ers WR watch: Will play: Brandon Aiyuk Maybe will play: Deebo Samuel Probably won't play: Jauan Jennings Samuel's ribs aren't the issue. It's the knee injury, which cropped up after the Giants game, that's been problematic. He missed WED & THURS practices, was limited today. (Matt Barrows on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: It seems the 49ers will get Aiyuk back in the mix after missing Week 3 with a shoulder injury. We'll have to wait for confirmation later this weekend on Deebo and running back Elijah Mitchell who injured his knee in practice on Thursday. If he sits, Jordan Mason would elevate into the No.2 role behind Christian McCaffrey.

Injury Brandon Aiyuk not expected to play Week 3
Shoulder injury
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Sep 21, 4:49 pm

San Francisco
The 49ers also elevated receiver Chris Conley and cornerback Shemar Jean-Charles from the practice squad. Brandon Aiyuk (shoulder) is not expected to play against the Giants while cornerback Ambry Thomas (knee) is questionable for the game. (Matt Barrows on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: After injuring his shoulder in Week 2, the 49ers have decided to play it safe on a short week and sit one of their better offensive players. With Aiyuk out, Deebo Samuel might see some increased usage but don't be surprised if TE George Kittle and running back Elijah Mitchell get more work in this game.
