2023 Outlook
Depth Chart
The Dolphins backfield was an absolute trash pile heading into the 2022 season and we really didn't get much clarity throughout the year. The situation hasn't changed much as the team is currently looking like it'll roll into the 2023 season with two former 49ers backs, Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson, competing for the top spot yet again.

Mostert is the player who conservative fantasy managers seem to have the most confidence in, but this situation is far from decided. He and Wilson finished with almost the exact same number of carries, very similar reception totals, and were within 30 snaps played of one another for the season in 2022. Neither player is a reliable fantasy asset, but Mostert's status as the perceived No. 1 back on the depth chart to start the season has meant that he's being selected significantly higher than Wilson, and sometimes even higher than rookie Devon Achane.

One thing to remember during early drafts is that the Dolphins have remained one of, if not the odds-on favorite to sign free agent veteran running back Dalvin Cook. Cook would provide a completely different skillset from the other backs in this offense and would almost certainly command the lead back role, so drafting any of the current Dolphins running backs comes with some serious risk. However, if you look closely at the types of backs who have been brought in by the current Dolphins staff, Cook doesn't fit the mold all that well. Sure, he's still got some juice, but he never had the 4.3 speed that the coaching staff tends to favor. Certainly, they could decide that it's worth it to shift their offense around a bit to bring in a proven star back like Cook, but they've also shown that they can have a successful overall offense even without a highly productive rushing attack, in no small part due to opposing defenses having to account for such impressive speed coming out of the backfield.

There are so many reasons to avoid Mostert in fantasy this season, but the truth is that there will probably be at least a few weeks where he emerges as an RB1 for fantasy. Unfortunately, those weeks will be incredibly difficult to predict, as they have been throughout his career in the NFL.

News From The Past 90 Days
Injury Devon Achane expected to be Inactive Week 1
Raheem Mostert, Salvon Ahmed expected to handle RB work
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Sep 10, 9:20 am

Miami Dolphins
Just mentioned on @NFLGameDay: #Dolphins rookie RB Devon Achane is expected to be inactive today against the #Chargers. The third-round pick from Texas A&M missed time in camp with a shoulder injury and has some rust. Raheem Mostert and Salvon Ahmed will carry the load. (Tom Pelissero on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The Dolphins backfield has been narrowed down to Mostert and Ahmed which makes Mostert a solid RB2 play this week in a high-total (51.5) game against the Chargers who gave up the 7th most fantasy to running backs last season in Half-PPR leagues.

Injury Jeff Wilson, Jalen Ramsey land on IR, out 4 games
Miami dealing with RB injuries
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Aug 31, 10:33 am

Miami Dolphins
The #Dolphins placed CB Jalen Ramsey, OL Robert Jones and RB Jeff Wilson Jr. on injured reserve. They’re out at least four games; Ramsey is expected back in December. (Tom Pelissero on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Wilson is dealing with an undisclosed injury which we'll likely learn more about in the coming days. This will boost the short-term value of Raheem Mostert who is likely to start for the Dolphins Week 1 against the Chargers. Devon Achane (shoulder) and Salvin Ahmed are also dealing with issues but have a chance to be active for Week 1.

Injury Devon Achane week-to-week with shoulder injury
May not be ready for Week 1
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Aug 21, 12:04 pm

Miami Dolphins
McDaniel said Devon Achane is "week to week." Said he avoided anything major. McDaniel doesn't commit to Achane playing in Week 1. "I think that far out, I'm not really being an issue. I'm more worried about how he's going to look at the end of this week." (Adam Beasley on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Achane injured his shoulder in the Dolphins Week 2 preseason game against the Texans. The rookie running back is battling for touches with veterans Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson, Salvon Ahmed and Myles Gaskin. Despite the injury, Achane will be a late-round upside play for leagues with deep benches.

NYJ won't go crazy in Dalvin Cook pursuit
RB had "good" visit with the team over the weekend
By: Doug Orth | Mon Jul 31, 5:30 pm

Miami Dolphins
Dalvin Cook visited the Jets (on July 30). He left without a contract. Saleh called it a “good” visit, but Jets aren’t “pushing” or “pressing” the issue. Basically, there’s no timeline for a signing. Cook needs to do what’s best for his family. The back’s desire to play for the Dolphins is pretty well known. It’s also important to know the Jets don’t need Cook. He’d be a welcome addition, but it’s a case of luxury, not necessity. Any contract offer from Joe Douglas will reflect that. (SNY - Connor Hughes)

FFToday's Take: The Dolphins may not be the betting favor to land Cook, but they probably should be. Signing with the Jets maybe allows Cook to enjoy a fairly sizeable early-season role, but he would almost certainly be stuck in an even timeshare - at best - with Breece_Hall. With Miami, Cook would go to his hometown town and likely assume a lead-back role ahead of rookie Devon Achane, Jeff Wilson and Raheem Mostert. Stay tuned.
