2019 Outlook
Depth Chart
The Chiefs made the decision to move on from Kareem Hunt, which now leaves running back Damien Williams in line for some serious fantasy potential in 2019. Williams made a splash down the stretch in 2018, producing some huge fantasy games down the stretch that almost certainly secured many fantasy league championships. He came out of nowhere in the eyes of many fantasy owners but Williams is an athletically gifted player with elite speed and feature back size. He's simply never been given an opportunity to prove himself as a starting running back in the NFL.

There is some concern that the newly acquired Carlos Hyde will cut into Williams' touches, but the potential upside for a running back in this Kansas City offense makes Williams too tantalizing to pass on simply because we're worried about a veteran plodding running back like Hyde. Williams only started five games for the Chiefs, including in the playoffs, but he caught 24 passes in those contests. If he had played a 16-game season at that pace, he would've finished with 77 catches. That, in addition with his quality rushing ability, in an offense as high-powered as Kansas City's, could mean some seriously monster fantasy numbers this season.

Yes, there are concerns that Williams has never "done it before," but the running back position in the NFL is often a product of situation more than it is player ability. That could be the case with Williams. He may not be an elite-level player, but that certainly doesn't mean that he's incapable of producing elite-level fantasy production. Andy Reid offenses typically feature one back and it seems highly unlikely that it will be Hyde unless Williams goes down.

Williams' current ADP has him going in the middle-to-end of the second round in most leagues, which is a great value for a player who could potentially finish as a high-end RB1 and whose floor, if he remains healthy, should be no lower than a mid-level RB2.

Injury Damien Williams returns
Hamstring injury
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Aug 7, 10:20 am

Kansas City Chiefs
Damien Williams is practicing for the first time since the first day of camp. We’ll see how much he does. Damien Williams is back but Carlos Hyde is taking the starter snaps at RB as Chiefs begin team drills. 10 plays of a team drill and Damien Williams didn't play. So looks like no team work for him today. (Adam Teicher on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Williams has been absent from training camp with a hamstring injury and still isn't a full go. It's unlikely he'll see any action in Kansas City's first pre-season game. Carlos Hyde, Darrel Williams and Darwin Thompson have been handling the bulk of running back duties with Damien out. I

Injury Damien Williams bothered by hamstring issue
Has yet to practice in training camp
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Aug 3, 1:00 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
Andy Reid sounded frustrated with starting running back Damien Williams, who has yet to practice with the Chiefs at training camp because of a sore hamstring. "He’s missed quite a bit," Reid said. "He’s missed a lot of plays. It’s been great for these other guys. (Carlos Hyde) has done a nice job. He’s got a lot of reps and he’s taking advantage of them." (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Williams is in a prime position to be a fantasy RB1 but has some legitimate concerns surrounding his health and lack of experience. Williams has never carried the ball more than 50 times in a season and is not getting off on the right foot in 2019. The Chiefs are currently looking at DB Tremon Smith on offense as a RB.

Andy Reid endorses Damien Williams
RB has "earned the right to be that guy"
By: Doug Orth | Thu Jul 11, 11:30 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
Kansas City Chiefs RB Damien Williams has "taken the challenge" and "earned the right to be (the full-time starter) for the year," according to head coach Andy Reid. (chiefs.com)

FFToday's Take: Reid did qualify his statement by saying "you take it one game at a time" and "it's a matter of production" in regards to whether he stays in that role. Based on his late-season play, there's little question he is capable. The question is ability to handle the workload; he hasn't handled more than 210 touches in a season since his junior college days. Reid's track record for getting fantasy production from running backs speaks for itself, so owners should be thrilled if they can get him in the second round.
