While Stafford was coming off the best season of his career (4,886 yards passing, 41 TDs, and a Super Bowl ring), there were less-than-ideal medical reports throughout the offseason that suggested the veteran wasn't where he (or the team) wanted him to be physically heading into 2022. As it turned out, the balky elbow that made him a risky selection for fantasy owners would be one of his lesser worries, which is never a good thing.
It began in Week 1, when Stafford absorbed seven sacks and tossed three INTs in a primetime beatdown at the hands of the Bills. Things seemed to stabilize a bit in Week 2 when he passed for 272 yards and three TDs, but that was fool's gold, and Stafford would only pass for more than one TD in a game once the rest of the way. Concussions and a neck injury brought his season to a merciful end on Nov. 20 with Stafford finishing with 2,087 yards passing, 10 TD, and 8 INTs in nine games -- that marked just the second time in the past dozen campaigns that he missed time due to injury.
Retirement was broached during the offseason, but Stafford, who was able to avoid surgery for the spinal cord contusion that led to him being shut down, elected to return for a 15th season. That answered one question, but many remain, all of which really boil down to this: how much does the 35-year-old have left in the tank?
The Rams' once-potent offense is short on established playmakers, and the offensive line will primarily be relying on a mix of unproven youth and veterans looking to turn the page on injury-filled seasons of their own. Yes, Cooper Kupp is still around, but beyond that it's unclear where Stafford can turn. While you can't count out Sean McVay's ingenuity, Stafford is no more than a mid-range QB2.

Matthew Stafford expected back for Week 11 Took part in individual drills on Monday By: Doug Orth | Mon Nov 13, 12:00 am

| | Sean McVay said he's expecting QB Matthew Stafford to play Sunday against the Seahawks. McVay said Stafford was able to throw the ball during individual drills during practice today. (ESPN.com - Sarah Barshop I know )
FFToday's Take: Since Stafford suffered a thumb injury in Week 8, the primary concern is his ability to grip the ball. So long as he is doing that - and it sounds as if that is the case - then the Rams are going to let him do his thing. Stafford's return is great news for Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua - both of whom were performing as top 20 fantasy receivers (points per game) through eight weeks. While Stafford figures to remain a middling QB2, Kupp and Nacua should return to WR1 status.

| Matthew Stafford a gametime decision for Week 9 Thumb injury By: Mike Krueger | Fri Nov 3, 2:14 pm

| | Rams will list QB Matthew Stafford as questionable for Sunday due to his thumb injury and wait as long as they can before deciding whether he can play at Green Bay. (Adam Schefter on X)
FFToday's Take: The Rams will take it up to gametime with Stafford. If he sits, Brett Rypien would get the start and be a low-end option in two-quarterback leagues. The Rams have a bye in Week 10 which could sway the decision.

| Matthew Stafford day-to-day Suffered right thumb sprain in Week 8 By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 30, 7:00 pm

| | Rams QB Matthew Stafford is day to day with a UCL sprain, per coach Sean McVay. (NFL Network - Ian Rapoport)
FFToday's Take: We will see what the practice week brings, but it appears as though Stafford was extremely fortunate to avoid a more serious injury. While there is always a chance the Rams could play things safe and sit Stafford against the Packers in Week 9 with their bye coming up the following week, L.A. may not feel it has the luxury of doing that at 3-5. Either way, it appears as though fantasy managers of Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua will be able to proceed as they normally would. Brett Rypien will draw the start in Week 9 if Stafford misses that contest.

| Joe Burrow listed as Questionable for Monday night Calf injury By: Mike Krueger | Sat Sep 23, 12:48 pm

| | Bengals are listing Joe Burrow as questionable for Monday night’s game versus the Rams due to his calf injury. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)
FFToday's Take: Burrow's strange cart ride with team owner Mike Brown yesterday and the signing of QB AJ McCarron today signal that there is some real question around Burrow's availability for Week 3. Hopefully we'll get more clarity before 1 pm Eastern on Sunday. If not, a backup plan of quarterbacks in the Monday night games include Baker Mayfield and Matthew Stafford.

| Cooper Kupp out for Week 1 Hamstring injury is still cause for concern By: Mike Krueger | Wed Sep 6, 4:22 pm

| | Cooper Kupp will be out on Sunday, per Sean McVay. "Not much more information...just dealing with some soft tissue stuff." While McVay did not clarify the nature of the specialist Cooper Kupp saw in Minnesota, he said team is "opening every avenue" to understand whether hamstring feeling related to soft-tissue injury or even possible nerve issue. "There's just a lot of gray behind this." (Jourdan Rodrigue on Twitter)
FFToday's Take: We didn't expect Kupp to play Week 1 but this is starting to feel like an issue that may linger for some time. McVay didn't rule out Kupp going on Injured Reserve. The way it stands now, Van Jefferson, Puka Nacua and Tutu Atwell are the top three widouts for Matthew Stafford. You can bet tight end Tyler Higbee will be heavily involved as well, with Kupp sidelined.
