Wide Receivers
Here are some comments on the WR data:
- I think it is safe to say no one would have pegged Anquan
Boldin to make the optimal regular season line up Week 1.
- One reason I thought it would be a good idea to do this exercise
is because it really helps to drive home the fact that we need
to consider players throughout the depth charts. WR is a perfect
example with 36 different players to pick throughout the regular
season and 12 more for the finals, for a total of 48. Some of
these names like Josh Reed, Quincy Morgan and Curtis Conway
would be considered risky and probably quickly discarded. Todd
Pinkston made the list! Unbelievable.
- In two cases, both during week 15 coincidentally, a pair of
WR from the same team were good enough to both land on the optimal
list. Marvin Harrison and Brandon Stokley versus the Falcons,
and Donald Driver and Robert Ferguson versus the Chargers. It
would be tough to justify that as a viable strategy however.
- The difference between Restricted and Unrestricted tables
for WR is less than the difference for RB, and that is with
an additional starting player each week for 4 weeks. Note FFTOC
scoring does not include points for receptions which tends to
bring WR up more in line with RB. It is still important to save
quality WR for the finals though, as the optimal lineup in the
Restricted table is a poor collection of names that would be
horrendous to predict or rely on. Much tougher than the available
names in the Unrestricted table. Only 3 of the 12 players in
the Restricted table were even the #1 fantasy WR option on their
respective teams in 2003.
- Between the QB, RB and WR tables, the Chargers defense (players
playing against them) accounted for top performances in at least
one position for weeks 4, 5, 9, 10, 12, 15 and 16.
