Steelers to put more emphasis on the run
Roethlisberger had 608 pass attempts in 2020
By: Mike Krueger | Jul 19 2021, 11:00 am

“Mr. (Art) Rooney has sent out a very clear directive to Mr. (Kevin) Colbert, to Coach (Mike) Tomlin, and then to me. We want to be able to run the ball when we have to run it,” new offensive coordinator Matt Canada said." Less Ben Roethlisberger will be a better Roethlisberger, or so that’s the theory heading into the 2021 season. Now, that doesn’t mean that he can’t and won’t have his moments, but for the Steelers and Roethlisberger to have any chance of proving the droves of doubters wrong, the days of throw short and run long and 50 passes per game have to be a thing of the past. FFToday's Take: Roethlisberger racked up 608 attempts last year in 15 games as the Steelers featured a short-yardage passing attack. He admitted to being worn down at the end of the season and given his elbow issues, it stands to reason the Steelers want to take a little off his plate in 2021. Pittsburgh threw the ball at a 64.6 percent clip last season (2nd highest) so it's a good bet that ratio will come down significantly if OC Matt Canada has his way.
