A League Of Robots
11/30/99

What is this world coming to? We are approaching the year 2000, almost everyone is hooked into the Internet, we have digital phones, new stadiums, new teams, new uniforms, and new owners but we still have trouble allowing freedom of expression after the latest ruling by the NFL where the throat slash gesture has been banned. I have to wonder how much freedom of expression and choice do we really have.

I think this latest ruling is absolutely ridiculous and is further movement in the direction of eliminating the individual personalities from the game. If the NFL has its way everyone will act the same on the field. I don’t think that is good for the game or the fans. All this touchy feely, political correct nonsense has no place on the playing field. I love to see the passion for the game in these players. The sack dances, the touchdown celebrations, etc…. Some of you may argue that the throat slashing gesture is a violent gesture and just isn’t sporting. To you people I have to laugh. Have you watched any cartoons or professional wrestling lately? That stuff is violent.

I believe, without the ability to show emotion the NFL players are going to start feeling disinterested from game to game. Playing against Brett Favre will feel like playing against Scott Mitchell. I for one don’t want to see a bunch of clones on the field. I want to see Deion high step into the endzone, I want to see Favre slash a throat, and I want to see Sapp do the sack dance. I want my individual players to be individuals that are full of pride and expression. To take that away from them takes away the competitive edge.

Mike Tyson was a skilled fighter but most of his victories came from intimidation. He would tell you how he would mash that nose bone through your brain with his uppercut. I mean after seeing this guy and hearing that wouldn’t you be scared come fight night? That was a tool he would use to take you out of your game, much as these gestures and dances are used to take a football player out of his game. These are the games inside of the games.

Just a few side notes about the season thus far:

I see Minnesota has been revitalized since my boy Jeff George has taken over the reigns. I know many of you call him a loser and such, and are probably saying he is going to cause some sort of problem before too long, but before I start hearing that nonsense again let me tell you why the Vikings won’t win the Superbowl. It has nothing to do with Jeff George. It has everything to do with that thing they call a defense. This team has no defense whatsoever and in the end that will cost this team. Jeff George will do what he needs to do offensively but they need guys on the defensive side to step up.

Lawrence Phillips has finally err played himself out of the NFL and this should be his last hurrah in the league. I guess its just a good to have common sense to go with that talent.

Hey Pittsburgh, the Kordell Stewart experiment is over with. Time to put a quarterback behind center.

Speaking of quarterbacks, isn’t about time for Young and Marino to hang it up?

Jacksonville vs St. Louis for all the marbles wouldn’t be a bad game.
