Wide Receivers

Must Start:

Joe Jurevicius v. BAL: If Cleveland is going to score, Jurevicius has the best chance. I know Edwards is a better receiver and Winslow is a great pass-catching tight end, but for some reason, Baltimore seems to struggle covering decent #2 receivers. If the Brownies can get into scoring range, they will be looking Joe’s way.

Kevin Walter @ ATL: This pick is for those desperate owners who have been backed into a corner by injuries and bye weeks. Ideally no one would be in a situation where the 3rd string Texans’ receiver starts looking attractive. But for some teams, all the good looking girls have dissed us and last call is approaching so it is time to look for that plain girl in the corner. Sure, Owen Daniels can catch the ball but Walter is about the only guy on the outside whose name Matt Schaub even knows.

Santonio HolmesSantonio Holmes @ ARI: This new-fangled Pittsburgh offense is looking pretty good. So much for smash-mouth football. With Hines Ward possibly shelved for the week, Holmes will be the main man in the Steelers aerial attack. If nothing else, one less receiver should mean the pie is cut into bigger pieces.

Greg Jennings @ MIN: In his first game of the season, Jennings had 82 yards and a touchdown. Favre will be making another trip to the Pro Bowl this year and Jennings will be catching a bunch of his passes. Through three games, the Packers have attempted 125 passes. Think their running game sucks?

James Jones @ MIN: Yes, I know I just told you to start Jennings and he is a better play. If someone already has him on their roster, Jones is a decent plan B for all the same reasons. The Packers spend a lot of time in three-receiver sets. If you have a better guy, put him in, but Jones is decent bye-week filler material.

Grab Some Pine:

Lee Evans v. NYJ: Maybe it is because I drafted him this season, but I really enjoy beating up on this loser. Maybe all this abuse will motivate him and he will score some points for a change. Considering the Bills’ change at quarterback, this scenario is unlikely. Of course, Evans value has always been getting open for a long TD pass. If Losman couldn’t get him the ball, Edwards won’t have any better luck.

Bernard Berrian @ DET: He is playing Detroit which is a wonderful thing. He also has a new quarterback with a weaker arm which really sucks. Berrian is in the same mold as Evans – a fast guy who catches those long touchdown bombs. That isn’t Griese’s strength.

Joe HornJoe Horn v. HOU: I was surprised to hear anyone was starting this stiff, but my emails say otherwise. Um…you can stop now. The Falcons offense is bad and Horn is old. Add in a couple young receivers and two running backs that excel at catching the ball out of the backfield and there just aren’t enough balls to go around, even if Horn was up to the challenge.

Troy Williamson v. GB: Gimpy hamstrings are never a good thing for speed receivers. Tarvaris Jackson is even worse for Williamson’s fantasy prospects. Even if Jackson could get him the ball, Williamson would drop it. Avoid all Viking receivers – it is as simple as that. If someone could somehow combine the Vikings’ running game with the Packers’ passing game things would be looking up for both of these franchises….

Brandon Marshall @ IND: Marshall has looked pretty good so far, even with Cutler regressing at quarterback. Indianapolis sports a pretty good defense though, having allowed only two receiving touchdowns so far. Go with another option until the Bronco offense gets on track or a better match up presents itself.
