| Running back Kenneth Walker has signed a three-year, $43.05 million deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. It's the first big domino to fall in free agency. The Chiefs are always Super Bowl contenders and now bring in a back fresh off lifting the Lombardi Trophy. It's the player with the most buzz landing in the spot with the most buzz, so the hype in dynasty circles is sky-high. With free agency just getting started, we need to look at the ripple effects of this signing. Here is a buy, sell, and deep stash following the Kenneth Walker deal. Buy: QB Patrick MahomesBuy the dip now. Patrick Mahomes is still an elite quarterback in the NFL. Yes, he has had two down seasons with back-to-back finishes as QB11. Last season was shortened by injury, and right now his dynasty value is at its lowest point since he took over as the starter. Mahomes still has plenty of weapons. Travis Kelce returns as his trusted safety valve. Rashee Rice will be on the field, and Xavier Worthy continues to develop as an NFL wide receiver. Now the Chiefs add Kenneth Walker, bringing a level of explosiveness to the running game that Kansas City has lacked in recent seasons. Right now, Mahomes is valued around QB7 or even lower in some leagues. He has everything he needs to push back into the top-five conversation. People are going to be all-in on the Chiefs' rushing game and may downplay the passing attack. However, we've seen Kansas City lean on the run until they reach the red zone, where Mahomes becomes creative with short passes that function almost like runs. Those extra fantasy points add up quickly. You can feel confident about the value you're getting with Mahomes.
Even without elite rushing upside, he remains an all-time great
quarterback. He'll come into the season with something to prove
while the conversation shifts toward other quarterbacks. That
kind of motivation often translates into fantasy championships
and dynasty dominance. Sell: RB Kenneth WalkerWe can't deny that Kenneth Walker is having a great winter. He won Super Bowl MVP after a playoff run that showcased his ability to handle a bell-cow role. Now he signs just minutes into the legal tampering period with the Kansas City Chiefs -- many people's top landing spot for a running back. I had the Chiefs much lower for one specific reason: volume. Under Andy Reid, running backs rarely receive top-end workloads. Only twice has the team's leading rusher surpassed 225 carries in a season. While the Chiefs operate one of the best offenses in the NFL, they simply don't rely on the running back position the way teams like the Rams, Eagles, or Lions do. When you combine that potential lack of volume with Walker's history, dynasty managers should take notice. The Seahawks drafted Walker in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft but never consistently gave him a heavy workload. He averaged more than 15 carries per game only once, and even that was barely above the threshold. Walker also carries some injury concerns, including multiple core muscle injuries dating back to his rookie season. With Walker's value currently at an all-time high, now may be the time to sell. Dynasty managers could likely get a first-round pick plus additional assets. He may be valued as a top-10 running back, but he has never finished higher than RB18 in fantasy scoring. That type of gap between perception and production creates an opportunity. Selling at peak hype can net strong returns. For example, you might be able to acquire a prospect like Cam Skattebo along with additional draft capital. Walker is still just 25 years old, but the questions about volume and durability shouldn't be ignored. Deep Stash: RB Brashard SmithIf we expect the Chiefs to rotate running backs, the only other back currently on the roster is Brashard Smith. Smith was an intriguing prospect coming out in last year's draft. A converted wide receiver, he is still developing his pure running back skills. However, his receiving ability is what makes him an appealing stash in this offense, especially with Walker projected as the primary early-down runner. Smith saw 35 targets last season -- just one fewer than Walker. That type of usage suggests he could handle the third-down role in Kansas City's offense. He may be difficult to trust in your lineup unless Walker misses time, but Smith could still deliver occasional spike weeks. Stashing him now could pay dividends if Walker were to go down with an injury. His value likely dipped after the Walker signing, so unless the Walker manager already rosters him, Smith could be acquired for a late-round pick. |
