Quarterbacks

QB Passing TDs
This data should help you assess what players to target or avoid if your league includes bonuses for distance TDs. This table shows passing TDs by distance (as a percentage, and number) for a select number of QBs. For comparison, it also breaks down the TD-distance for ALL QBs. Data is from the 2001-2004 regular season games.

Here are some interesting points to note (at least, interesting to me) from the historic data:
  • Even though he has a strong arm, Brett Favre throws a very high % of TDs from short range. This has a lot to do with the Packers' offensive philosophy. The west-coast offense has a similar impact on results for Donovan McNabb and Matt Hasselbeck.

  • If your league generously rewards TDs over 40 yards, then Peyton Manning and Daunte Culpepper are the guys you want, which unfortunately is no different than if you want one of the top two QBs in any other league. Trent Green hits a surprising number of long TDs considering his top receiver is a TE.

  • The general consensus on Kerry Collins is that he throws a nice deep ball - ideal for Randy Moss' arrival - but the distance TD data doesn't really support that. His results are pretty average across the board.

  • The guys with the highest percentages of long TDs are David Carr, Byron Leftwich and Carson Palmer, the only three over 20%. All of them are QBs who are still in the early development stages learning the position at the NFL level. We can expect them to regress back closer to the mean this upcoming season after getting another year under their belts.

QB Rushing TDs
This data should help you assess what players to target or avoid if your league includes bonuses for distance TDs. This table shows rushing TDs by distance (as a percentage, and number) for a select number of QBs. For comparison, it also breaks down the rushing TDs by distance for ALL QBs. Data is from the 2001-2004 regular season games.

Here are some interesting points to note from the historic data:
  • Only 5 rushing TDs scored by all QBs over 40 yards in the past 4 seasons (none scored last season). If your league doesn't start yardage bonuses until 40 yards, then don't put too much weight into this when ranking your QBs.
