Do you get the feeling that Eli is the Rodney Dangerfield of fantasy quarterbacks? Rodney couldn’t get any respect and neither can Eli. After his breakout campaign in 2005 when he finished as the fourth-ranked fantasy quarterback (albeit in a soft year for production at the position), he fell to 11th, 13th, and 15th over the next three years. However, over the last two seasons, Manning has made it into the top ten, finishing seventh this past season and 10th in 2009. Yet despite his two consecutive 4,000-yard seasons and 58 touchdowns over that period, look for Eli to be rated as a bottom-tier starter in 12-team leagues heading into 2011. “He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother” might best sum up the respect Eli gets in fantasy circles. Clearly Manning’s production is due in part to his solid supporting cast, including one of the league’s best trios of wide receivers in Hakeem Nicks, Steve Smith, and Mario Manningham—along with a solid pass-catching running back in Ahmad Bradshaw and a serviceable tight end in Kevin Boss. Look for the Giants to bring back that same supporting cast on offense, although Smith is a question mark because of the microfracture surgery he needed to repair the knee injury he suffered midway through last season. Considering his propensity for giving the ball away (25 interceptions and five fumbles in 2010), move Manning down in leagues that penalize turnovers, but consider him a decent option just outside the big six at quarterback.
Ballard suffered ACL tear in SB XLVI-- Wed Feb 8 7:40 pm -- Giants TE to recover from knee injury during offseason
New York Giants tight end Jake Ballard tore his left anterior cruciate ligament during the second half of the Super Bowl, the team announced on Tuesday. An MRI discovered Ballard’s injury, and with the help of crutches, he was able to participate in Tuesday’s parade and ceremonies in New York and New Jersey. Ballard, an undrafted free agent, had 38 catches for 604 yards and four touchdowns this regular season. In the four playoff games, he had five catches for 43 yards. He had two receptions in the Giants’ 21-17 win over New England on Sunday in Indianapolis.(Yahoo Sports)
FF Today's Take:For a fantasy player, Ballard was rather mediocre this season ranking 17th in receiving yards and 20th in touchdowns at his position. His average reception of 15.9 yards, however, was tops among NFL tight ends. If he recovers from the ACL tear and can develop some more consistency with quarterback Eli Manning, Ballard has the potential to be a serviceable fantasy tight end.
Hakeem Nicks will definitely play-- Mon Jan 30 10:02 am -- Shoulder
Per a league source, Nicks is expected to play. Though it’s unclear whether his range of motion will be limited, the source was optimistic that Nicks will be “fine.”(ProFootballTalk)
FF Today's Take:The shoulder doesn't look like it will prevent Nicks from playing since his lower body is fine. However, Nicks needs to get back to practice and show his range of motion isn't too limited if he is to be a focal point of the passing game.
Ballard hampered by knee injury-- Fri Jan 20 7:30 pm -- Giants TE listed as questionable for NFC championship
Jake Ballard's right knee is bothering him a bit. Not enough, though, to keep him out of a game this big. The New York Giants' tight end was listed as questionable Friday for the NFC championship game at San Francisco after having a "little procedure" on his right knee Thursday night and sitting out practice.
(SI)
FF Today's Take:Ballard will play through an injury, but his limited abilities shouldn't hurt the Giants' passing game too much. Expect Eli Manning to lean on his favorite targets, namely receivers Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz.
Giants' Manning back at practice-- Thu Jan 19 12:30 pm -- Stomach bug doesn't keep Eli sidelined on Thursday
New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning was on the practice field Thursday after cutting practice short because of illness the day before. Manning didn't look uncomfortable in the portion of practice open to the media.
He had what coach Tom Coughlin described Wednesday as a stomach bug.(ESPN)
FF Today's Take:Manning is in no danger of missing this week's NFC title game with the 49ers.
Eli Manning battling stomach bug-- Wed Jan 18 8:30 pm -- QB sat out most of Wednesday's practice
New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning missed part of Wednesday's practice session with an illness that coach Tom Coughlin called "a stomach bug, hopefully a 24-hour deal." Manning was placed on the Giants' injury report for the first time this season as a limited participant in practice, though he missed the majority of it. The team is preparing to play the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday for the NFC championship.
(SI)
FF Today's Take:This shouldn't be an issue with the NFC Championship game still four days away. After last week's victory, Manning has an impressive 6-3 career record in the postseason.
Ballard out, Manningham doubtful-- Fri Dec 23 7:20 pm -- Manning to work with depleted receiving corps this week
New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning will be without his best tight end and might have to face the Jets without one of his top three receivers as well. Tight end Jake Ballard was officially ruled out with a knee injury, and wide receiver Mario Manningham is listed as doubtful, also with a knee problem, for the Giants' critical game Saturday. If Manningham is unable to play, Victor Cruz will see more of cornerback Antonio Cromartie and perhaps even some of Darrelle Revis. When Manningham is available, Cruz plays some in the slot in three-receiver sets.(ESPN)
FF Today's Take:Unfortunate news for Manning and Ballard owners, as the Philadelphia Eagles' QB-TE tandem of Michael Vick and Brent Celek teamed up for 154 yards last week against the New York Jets defense. Manningham owners should stay on top of his injury status heading into the weekend, though he should only be considered as a starter in the deepest leagues.
Giants confident they are a playoff team-- Wed Dec 7 3:00 pm -- Rolle: "Without a doubt"
Safety Antrel Rolle isn't concerned about seeing a 6-2 record melt into 6-6, telling a local radio station that New York, 14-18 under Coughlin in December, is playoff bound. "You ask will we make the playoffs? Without a doubt," Rolle told WFAN-AM on Tuesday. "If we go out there and we play with the intensity and emotion and passion we had this last Sunday, man, those teams (left on the schedule) are in trouble."(NFL.com)
FF Today's Take:Eli Manning and the Giants' offense will need to be productive while protecting the football against the last three teams on their schedule: the Dallas Cowboys (twice), Washington Redskins and New York Jets. All three teams rank in the top half of the NFL in points allowed and have had no problems forcing turnovers.
