After his historic 2009 season in which he set the NFL record for most yards from scrimmage (2,509) and became just the sixth running back to rush for over 2,000 yards, there was strong sentiment that Johnson would see his production decline because of his heavy workload from the previous year. Sure enough, Johnson wasn’t as dynamic, and his production also suffered due to Tennessee’s poor quarterback play. His numbers dropped to 1,364 rushing yards and 245 receiving yards with 12 total touchdowns, bumping him down to fifth place in the fantasy running back rankings. Entering 2011, there are two concerns with taking Johnson at the top of fantasy drafts: his contract situation and the team’s passing game. CJ2K is holding out for a new contract, but that situation figures to get resolved since his salaries for the next two years are incommensurate with his production. The passing attack will be lead by former Seahawk Matt Hasselbeck, but there are major question marks at wide receiver and tight end. It’s almost a foregone conclusion that Johnson will be facing eight- and nine-man fronts on rushing downs. That means another otherworldly season is unlikely, but he is definitely a top-three fantasy running back, assuming he shows up for Week 1.
FF Today's Take:Coach Mike Munchak suggested after practice that Johnson will be able to get in a full session on Friday but until we see it, Johnson`s situation has to be monitored. He was hampered last week and frankly he was brutal. Starting Johnson even if he plays is a risky proposition indeed.
Titans RB Johnson questionable-- Fri Dec 23 8:00 pm -- With ankle injury
Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson is questionable for Saturday's game with the Jacksonville Jaguars after being limited by his sore right ankle Friday. Johnson hurt his ankle late in last week's 27-13 loss to the Colts and did not practice Tuesday or Wednesday.(NFL.com)
FF Today's Take:Johnson mustered up just 24 rushing yards in the season opener against Jacksonville, albeit in less than stellar shape after his lengthy contract-related holdout. Despite the minor ankle strain, expect Johnson to play and to be more effective in the Titans Christmas Eve tilt with the Jags.
Chris Johnson limited in practice-- Thu Dec 22 6:07 pm -- Titans RB expected to play against Jacksonville this week
FF Today's Take:Johnson appears good to go for Saturday in a juicy matchup against the Jaguars. He should get his regular workload for what that is worth!
Chris Johnson held out of practice-- Tue Dec 20 7:55 pm -- CJ2K dealing with sore ankle but should play
FF Today's Take:Johnson mentioned that cutting was an issue after his Week 15 game. That sounds problematic. Although Johnson is still expected to play against the Jaguars on Sunday, this situation requires some monitoring for sure. Keep close tabs on the practice report throughout the week if you are depending on Johnson during Championship week.
CJ2K "should be fine" for Week 16-- Mon Dec 19 6:35 pm -- HC suggests RB will be questionable vs. Jags
FF Today's Take:There doesn't seem to be much concern about his status at the moment, but Munchak did mention the possibility of promoting Herb Donaldson from the practice squad on Monday since Javon Ringer is unlikely to play. Jacksonville doesn't present the same prohibitive matchup it did a few weeks ago, but Johnson is a good bet to struggle for RB1 numbers in that matchup. Jamie Harper would draw the start if Johnson cannot go.
