Redskins release Gaffney-- Tue May 1 9:00 am -- Redskins save 2.65 million
The Washington Redskins have released wide receiver Jabar Gaffney after several failed attempts to trade the 10-year veteran, a person with knowledge of the situation said Tuesday. Gaffney, whom the Redskins acquired via trade last summer, led the team with 68 catches for 947 yards, along with two touchdowns, in 2011.(Washington Post)
FF Today's Take:The signing of Pierre Garcon and Josh Morgan have made Gaffney expendable. The Redskins will save 2.65 million on the release.
Avery hoping to resurrect career in Indy-- Sat Apr 7 8:20 pm -- Speedster hoping to put injury woes behind him
The book on new Colts WR Donnie Avery is he’s fast. When the Colts lost Pierre Garcon in free agency to Washington, they needed a burner who could go deep and stretch the field. A former second-round pick, he showed promise with 100 catches in two seasons with St. Louis. Then he blew out his right knee in a preseason game before the 2010 season. His right ACL was surgically repaired, but the Rams evidently didn’t see the same promise in a guy who once ran a 4.27 40-yard dash at his pre-draft pro day. Avery eventually landed in Tennessee but he couldn’t supplant the young receivers the Titans were playing.(Indianapolis Star)
FF Today's Take:With wide receiver Pierre Garcon and tight ends Dallas Clark and Jacob Tamme leaving through free agency, there will be a lot more football to go around in Indianapolis next season. Avery could be a nice low-risk, medium-reward option in the late rounds of 2012 fantasy drafts.
Garcon to join the Redskins-- Tue Mar 13 4:30 pm -- Wide receiver leaks news on his Facebook page
Pierre Garcon has agreed to sign with the Washington Redskins, the former Colts receiver announced on his Facebook page Tuesday. "I wanted you all to hear it from me 1st before u saw it on the news... I will be signing with the Washington Redskins and I'm very excited about the opportunity in front of me," Garcon wrote. The 25-year-old receiver had 70 receptions for 947 yards and six touchdowns in 2011, catching passes from a carousel of quarterbacks. (ESPN)
FF Today's Take:Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III is expected to be under center for Washington in 2012 and in addition to Garcon, there are reports that San Francisco receiver Josh Morgan is on the verge of signing with the Redskins as well.
Redskins looking at WR in free agency-- Wed Feb 29 1:00 pm -- Vincent Jackson could be a target
The Washington Redskins are making plans to add a high-profile wide receiver in an NFL free agent market that has them in abundance, according to several people familiar with the team’s deliberations. Their leader in receiving yards, wideout Jabar Gaffney, was tied for 26th in the league with 947 yards.(Washington Post)
FF Today's Take:If the Chargers don't use the franchise tag on Vincent Jackson he could fit the Redskins need at wide receiver. Other potential options include Marques Colston (NO) and Pierre Garcon (IND).
