Forte has been in the league for three years now and fully healthy for two. In 2009, he played through knee and hamstring injuries, yet still averaged a respectable 10.3 points per game. In his two healthy seasons, he has been highly productive, averaging 15.2 fantasy points per game in 2008 and 13.5 in 2010. He ain’t sexy, but he produces, albeit not as consistently as one would hope (of his 216 fantasy points, 133 came in just six games). While Forte isn’t a top-five candidate given the lack of playmakers on the Bears offense, which limits his touchdown potential, his list of positives is long. He’s a workhorse back, having beaten back the threat of a timeshare with Chester Taylor from a year ago; he’s one of the best receiving backs in the league, averaging 57 receptions per year; and he hasn’t missed a game in three years. Better yet, he will likely present value on draft day. Chalk him up as a low-end RB1 or high-end RB2 for 2011.
Bears hopeful for deal with Forte-- Wed Feb 1 8:56 am -- Franchise tag a likely option if long term deal is not reached
New Chicago Bears general manager Phil Emery has plenty of issues to address as he gets to work at Halas Hall. With three weeks to decide whether to apply the franchise tag on Pro Bowl running back Matt Forte, Emery's boss said Tuesday that the Bears won't let the Pro Bowl running back reach free agency. "We'd like to (work out a long-term deal with Forte)," Bears president and CEO Ted Phillips said on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "But as Phil pointed out we obviously will at least consider placing the franchise tag on him. We don't have any intention of letting Matt hit the open market."(ESPNChicago.com)
FF Today's Take:Chicago needs to make a serious push to get Forte signed to a long term extension this off-season to prevent a holdout. Using the franchise tag on Forte remains an option for the team, but that may not sit well with a team leader who just risked injury to play last season.
RB Forte hopes to return to Bears-- Wed Jan 4 10:30 pm -- Star back optimistic about a new contract
Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte, whose public desire for a new contract was one of the challenges facing general manager Jerry Angelo all season, is now optimistic he can get a long-term deal done, although he didn't say it was because Angelo was fired. "The Bears as an organization have a lot of decisions to make right now," Forte said. "I guess we're getting new players in and coaches and managers. "I'm looking forward to hopefully being back with the team and hopefully sign a long-term deal."(ESPN)
FF Today's Take:Forte was putting together a career year before an MCL injury derailed his season in week 13. He finished the season with 1487 yards from scrimmage in just 12 games. Returning from a knee injury to a Bears' team that will have a new offensive coordinator next season, Forte is shaping up as something of a risky fantasy pick in 2012.
Cutler and Forte land on IR-- Tue Dec 27 6:20 pm -- Season officially over for Bears QB and RB
Bears placed QB Jay Cutler (thumb) and Matt Forte (MCL Sprain) on injured reserve, ending their seasons.
FF Today's Take:Officially eliminated from the playoffs this move is absoluteluy no surprise. Both are expected back to the Bears next season - Cutler is signed until 2013 and Forte is headed toward a franchise tag! They will both likely be hot comodities in next years' fantasy drafts.
Forte taking all measures in recovery-- Fri Dec 9 4:30 pm -- Bears RB using hyperbaric chamber to speed healing process
A player the Bears discarded could help his former team get an injured star back on the field sooner. Chargers defensive tackle Tommie Harris had no problem giving his "little brother'' Matt Forte access to his Gurnee home to use a $20,000 hyperbaric chamber stored in the basement. The unit, which aids in healing by enhancing oxygen levels to injured body parts, might help Forte expedite the recovery process after he suffered a Grade 2 sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee.(Chicago Tribune)
FF Today's Take:Forte is desperate to recover, not only to help the Bears' abysmal Jay Cutler-less offense, but likely to reinforce his value when he becomes a free agent this offseason. The extra measures he is taking to boost his recovery is encouraging, but he's still unlikely to return until week 17 when most fantasy leagues have already finished.
Forte's timetable for return uncertain-- Wed Dec 7 2:45 pm -- RB receives plasma injection to speed recovery
Chicago Bears star running back Matt Forte isn’t sure when he’ll return from a sprained right knee. Forte said players with injuries like his generally miss two to six weeks. He got a plasma injection Tuesday morning hoping to speed the healing process, but he will sit out against Denver this week. “It’s disappointing,” said Forte, who has started all 60 games since he was drafted in 2008. “It’s going to be my first game missed in my entire career. I’ve been playing going on four years and haven’t missed a game. I’m not excited about that.”(Yahoo Sports)
FF Today's Take:During Forte's absence, you can expect veteran Marion Barber to receive the majority of the carries for the Bears. The 28-year-old has been somewhat effect of late, averaging 4.3 yards per carry over his last three games, though he lacks Forte's tremendous ability as a backfield receiver.
Injured Forte expected to be back -- Mon Dec 5 12:09 pm -- Bears hoping for Christmas Day return
Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte is expected to be back on the field before the end of the season, as long as contract issues don't factor into equation. A source confirmed that Forte suffered a Grade 2 sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee. It's typically a four-week injury, but Forte's history as a fast healer is expected to get him back on the field within two weeks. The targeted return is the Christmas Day game at Green Bay, if not sooner.
(Chicago Tirbune)
FF Today's Take:Fast healer or not, Forte's contract issue will loom large as the Bears' running back heals from a MCL sprain. The current target date of Christmas day still means Forte will miss weeks 14 and 15. That means Marion Barber will assume the heavy lifting in the short term. However, Barber shouldn't be considered much more than a flex option due to the Bears' shortcomings at the QB position limiting thier ability to move the ball on offense.
Forte has Grade 2 MCL sprain-- Sun Dec 4 9:25 pm -- Could miss 2-6 weeks
Matt Forte suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain in Sunday's loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, according to the initial diagnosis, sources close to the situation told ESPN.com.
Injuries such as these typically sideline players two to six weeks. There are four games left in the season.
Forte walked off the field with athletic trainers in the first quarter after taking a shot to the right knee from LB Derrick Johnson. The club immediately declared him out.(ESPN)
FF Today's Take:In one felt swoop, the Bears' playoff hopes - along with Forte's owners - are in trouble. With Forte missing most of the game, the Bears managed just 183 total yards. Marion Barber took the majority of carries in Chicago's backfield after Forte left and will need to carry the load in his absence, although he will cede the occasional carry to Kahlil Bell. Barber should be viewed as a high-end flex option with Denver and Seattle next on the schedule.
