This side of Antonio Gates, there isn’t a more feared pass-catching tight end in the league than Jermichael Finley. He possesses outstanding size, speed, and agility, and he is entering just his fourth year as a pro. The only problem is that he hasn’t played a lot after spending his rookie year figuring out the team’s offensive playbook, missing three games to injury in his second year when he was just getting rolling, and missing most of last year after he tore his meniscus in Week 5. On the plus side, the Packers featured him over the first four games of last season, targeting him 26 times. In those four games, he averaged nine fantasy points per game on 21 receptions for 301 yards and a score. With Finley, the upside is huge, but so is the injury risk, which precludes him from being in the top-tier at the position. Place him at the top of the second tier, but make sure you have a decent backup at the ready.

Comment: Finley has all the physical tools to be the best tight end in fantasy. His early workouts in camp along with potential changes in the Packers receiving corps could land Finley closer to the top of our TE rankings come August.

News From The Past 90 Days
Injury Tony Gonzalez to play another season     -- Fri Feb 3 8:10 pm --

Veteran TE coming off 875 yard season
Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez said Thursday that next season probably will be his last — though it’s not the first offseason he has said that, nor does should it come as a surprise. Gonzalez, who last month signed a one-year, $6.9 million contract extension with the idea that the 2012 season might be his last one, oddly made Thursday’s declaration not through the team or his agent but rather on an ESPN/Facebook chat. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

FF Today's Take: The wave of younger, more athletic tight ends that includes Rob Gronkowski, Jimmy Graham, Aaron Hernandez and Jermichael Finley will be the way to go in fantasy next year. The windows of opportunity for high profile veterans like Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates could begin closing at any time, as injuries and wear and tear continue to mount.
Injury Jermichael Finley returns to practice     -- Thu Dec 29 6:10 pm --

Packers may opt to rest TE despite him practicing
Jermichael Finley (knee) returned to a limited practice on Thursday. (Ty Dunne on Twitter)

FF Today's Take: Good news for Finley owners. But keep in mind that Sunday`s game is virtually meaningless for the Packers. The team may just keep Finley on the sidelines in order to keep him fresh for the playoffs. Finley is a large Fantasy risk this week.
Injury Cobb, Starks sit out Thursday     -- Thu Dec 29 1:40 pm --

Green Bay likely to rest injured players Week 17
Rookie wide receiver Randall Cobb (groin) and running back James Starks (ankle) remained out. The team will likely be cautious with Starks, who has been battling ankle injuries since Nov. 20. Tight back Jermichael Finley (knee) was also back at practice. (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)

FF Today's Take: The Packers may choose to rest Cobb and Starks as they play a meaningless Week 17 game against the Lions. Expect to see a lot of Brandon Saine and John Kuhn at running back this week.
Injury Jennings suffers "knee sprain"     -- Sun Dec 11 10:15 pm --

WR reportedly tore MCL
The Packers weren't able to escape Sunday's 46-16 blowout win over the Oakland Raiders without a serious injury. Wide receiver Greg Jennings suffered a "knee sprain," according to coach Mike McCarthy. The extent of the injury is unknown right now. In the first half, after a reception, Jennings was tangled up between two Raiders players. After getting help to the trainer's table, he was carted off and did not return. (Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel)

FF Today's Take: Jennings gave two separate thumbs-up to the crowd as he rode off on the cart, but afterward, Aaron Rodgers said he hopes the receiver returns by the postseason. Taking that statement and a Pro Football Talk report into account, owners need to be prepared for the possibility that Jennings is done for the regular season and maybe more. Jermichael Finley, James Jones and Donald Driver - likely in that order - figure to benefit the most in fantasy from his absence.
