2014 Outlook
Depth Chart
Not since the days of Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson have the Chiefs had a fantasy producer anywhere near the level of running back Jamaal Charles. Charles, who was a consensus round 1 pick in 2013, lived up to the hype and then some with a monstrous fantasy season that made him the top-scoring fantasy back in practically all formats. Although he finished third in rushing yards, his 693 receiving yards were nearly 100 yards better than the next best back (Danny Woodhead), and his 19 total touchdowns were five more than that of any other rusher. You will hear whispers about increased opportunities for backup Knile Davis, but Charles will likely shoulder another heavy load in 2014, which makes him one of a few candidates for the No. 1 overall pick in fantasy football drafts this season. Of course, the high number of touches also makes Charles a candidate for injury, but given the lack of true “feature backs” remaining in the league, the potential reward far outweighs the risk of drafting Charles with your top draft pick this season.

Comment: Still love Jamaal, just not at No. 1. The Chiefs have numerous injury issues and offensive line is becoming a growing concern.

Injury Charles likely to play, Probable on Injury Report
Chiefs should have star running back available Monday night
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Sep 27, 3:00 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles is listed as probable on the team’s injury report for Monday night’s home game against New England, meaning he is almost certain to be available to play. Charles suffered a high ankle sprain in a week two loss at Denver after only two carries — an output that followed only seven carries in the season opener against Tennessee. (Kansas City Star)

FFToday's Take: Charles was limited in practice this week but it appears he will get the start Monday night against the Patriots. Owners can safely insert him into their lineups but this may be a scenario where Andy Reid will sprinkle in Knile Davis more than normal. I'd expect a 70-30 workload split between Charles and Davis.

Injury Jamaal Charles to practice Thursday
Head coach thinks Charles will play
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Sep 25, 12:45 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
Chiefs plan to expand Jamaal Charles' role in practice today and see how he does. Berry and DAT are more iffy. They may not practice (Adam Teicher via Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Andy Reid said "Yeah, I think so" in a response to a question whether Charles would play on Monday night. It sounds like Charles will play unless he has a setback in practice this week.

Injury Charles not expected to play, gametime decision
Will test injured ankle in pregame warmups
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Sep 21, 8:37 am

Kansas City Chiefs
Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (ankle) is not expecting to play today, I’m told. Will still test it out pregame. Looking like Knile Davis (Ian Rapoport via Twitter)

FFToday's Take: It should be noted that an hour earlier Rapoport reported that Charles was a "gametime decision" and that Charles injury was more of a bruise than an ankle sprain which gives him "a real chance". We likely won't know Charles' real status until inactives come out. Chiefs play at 4:25 pm Eastern.

Injury Charles questionable, re-evaluated Saturday
Sprained ankle
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Sep 19, 4:35 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles, who is on the injury report with a sprained ankle, practiced with the starters on Friday, but coach Andy Reid wasn’t certain how much, if any, Charles will be able to play on Sunday against Miami. Charles was listed as questionable for the game. "We’re going to see how he feels after this practice," Reid said. "He moved around and did a decent job. He looked a little sore, but he did OK." (Kansas City Star)

FFToday's Take: We'll get a better indication of Charles' availability if he makes the trip to Miami tomorrow. If so, and he becomes a gametime decision, fantasy owners may be in a bind since the Chiefs play at 4:25 Eastern. Knile Davis would get the start and be a borderline RB1 if Charles doesn't play.

Injury Charles back at practice
Took part in warm-ups and cutting drills
By: Doug Orth | Thu Sep 18, 4:00 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
RB Jamaal Charles, who suffered a high ankle sprain in last week's game against Denver, was participating in the early portion of Kansas City Chiefs practice Thursday. His availability for Sunday's game against the Dolphins in Miami is uncertain. Charles went through warm-ups with his teammates and was then tended to briefly by trainer Rick Burkholder before joining the running backs for position drills. One such drill involved cutting through cones to catch a pass. Charles did this several times and appeared to pass these tests without a problem. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Charles' quick return to practice is an interesting turn of events after he did not go on Wednesday. Kansas City desperately needs a win, but it would be foolish for the team to rush him back if he has anything close to the high ankle sprain that was initially reported. Although the surprise return bodes well for Charles' Week 4 status and beyond, Knile Davis is the heavy favorite to dominate touches this week.

Injury Charles diagnosed with high ankle sprain
No timetable for return
By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 15, 3:45 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles suffered a high ankle sprain, and S Eric Berry sprained an ankle in Sunday’s loss at Denver, HC Andy Reid said Monday. Reid provided no timetable for their returns. A high ankle sprain can often result in a multi-week injury, but Reid says Charles’ injury “doesn’t look to be a real severe one.” “It does have the component of a high ankle sprain. What does that mean? We’ll see,” Reid said. (Kansas City Star)

FFToday's Take: Fantasy owners know this drill pretty well by now. High-ankle sprains are often multi-week injuries and Charles would be doing himself and his team a disservice by trying to rush back. Knile Davis will step and replace him as the featured back in his absence. The second-year back should be considered a low-end RB1 in all leagues while Charles is out.

Injury Jamaal Charles out tonight, bruised foot
Didn't make trip to Carolina
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Aug 17, 5:11 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
Jamaal Charles will not play tonight for Chiefs vs. Carolina. Hearing it's a bruised foot. Didn't make trip to Charlotte. (Adam Teicher via Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The Chiefs beat reporter went on to say the team doesn't consider the injury to be serious. Knile Davis is expected to get the start in Kansas City's second preseason game against the Panthers.

Charles gets contract extension, RB headed to camp
Two-year contract extension
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Jul 23, 4:35 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
Jamaal Charles and the Chiefs have struck a deal, source says. He’s heading to camp now. (Ian Rapoport via Twitter)

FFToday's Take: That was quick. Just 45 minutes after the deadline to report to camp, a new contract extension has been agreed to by the Chiefs and their star running back. The first training camp practice is scheduled for Thursday.

Jamaal Charles doesn't report to camp Wed.
Chiefs' RB considered a training camp holdout
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Jul 23, 4:06 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs' 3 p.m. CT reporting deadline has passed and Jamaal Charles is not in camp, making him a holdout. First practice is Thurs. p.m. (Adam Teicher via Twitter)

FFToday's Take: One of best running backs in the game is seeking more money. Charles is under contract through 2015 but wants a new deal based on prior production. He's underpaid relatively to others at his position but the league-wide trend is not pay running backs. The Chiefs signed Charles to a six-year deal worth close to $28 million back in 2010. This is no time for fantasy owners to panic. It's hard to imagine this situation resulting in Charles missing any regular season games even if the "holdout" lasts well into training camp.
