2016 Outlook
Depth Chart
Always a fantasy juggernaut, Jamaal Charles was off to a great start once again in 2015 as he had already accumulated 541 total yards and five total touchdowns by the end of Week 5. Unfortunately, it was in Week 5 when Charles once again broke the hearts of Chiefs fans and fantasy owners everywhere when he tore his ACL for the second time in his career. There aren’t many NFL running backs who’ve come back from torn ACL’s and picked up right where they left off by dominating the league, but Charles is definitely a player who did just that. He missed nearly the entire 2011 season before coming back in 2012 and setting a career high in rushing yardage with 1,509 yards. Now 29 years old, however, Charles is at a substantially higher risk for not being able to return to peak condition.

The concerns with Jamaal Charles are two-fold in that, he might not be fully recovered and thus may not be the dominant force that we once remembered him being. But in addition to that, there is a growing worry that the Chiefs might give into the current NFL trends and turn their backfield into a much more split by-committee approach. Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware are not the physical beasts that Charles is, but they showed in 2015 that they are capable of producing serviceable numbers as a duo. Even if Charles remains healthy, they might cut into what has typically been one of the highest workloads of any back in the league. Still, Charles presents the kind of upside that is rare to find in Round 2 and would be the ideal complement to an elite WR should fantasy owners opt to go in that direction in Round 1. Even if he doesn’t get back to producing high-end RB1 numbers, his usage should at least allow him to finish in the range of an RB1.

Charles still not ready for heavy workload
HC impressed with RB in first extensive action
By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 17, 5:40 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
While Chiefs HC Andy Reid noted Monday that what it was good to have Jamaal Charles back “in all areas,” Spencer Ware still out-touched Charles 26 to 11 and logged more snaps, 40 to 15, an indication the Chiefs are still cautious with their star as he works his way back from a second torn ACL. “Is he ready to carry it every down? I don’t think that’s where we're at right this minute. But he got more carries than he did against Pittsburgh, and his attitude — from the get go — has been give me the ball, I want to play. The attitude is awesome,” Reid said of Charles. (Kansas City Star)

FFToday's Take: It has been made very clear Ware is going to continue having a role, but his time as the lead back in the Chiefs' backfield is likely coming to an end soon. Charles is probably going to take over the lead role sometime in the next couple of weeks, making now a great buy-low opportunity for the 29-year-old back and a good time to see what Ware's trade value is.

Jamaal Charles looking at limited role yet again?
Chiefs continue to exercise caution with RB

Kansas City Chiefs
"We'll sprinkle him in where we feel he's most effective." - OC Brad Childress on using Jamaal Charles. Chiefs want to work him back in. (Pete Sweeney on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Late drafters knew they were taking a risk he would not contribute much for the first four or so weeks when they used a third- or fourth-round pick on Charles, but even the most patient owners have to be up in arms with the idea of him still being "sprinkled" into the offense heading into Week 6. He's probably a low-end flex, while starter Spencer Ware is probably a midrange RB2 at best despite a plus-matchup in Week 6 against Oakland.

Injury Jamaal Charles full participant in practice
Workload ready to increase
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Oct 12, 1:30 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs plan for Jamaal Charles to be a full practice participant today for the first time this season. They also plan to use him more on Sunday than he did in his season debut against the Steelers. "As long as there are no setbacks, he'll probably do a little bit more," coach Andy Reid said. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Reading between the lines, the original plan for Charles called for him to sit out through the Week 5 bye but he needed to be active in Week 4 due to an injury to Charcandrick West. At worst, expect Charles and Spencer Ware to split touches evenly but don't be surprised if Charles resumes his role as the featured back as long as his stamina isn't in question.

Injury West out, Jamaal Charles expected to play
Charles ot make season debut
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Sep 30, 3:00 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
Despite being listed as questionable (knee), Chiefs' RB Jamaal Charles will make 2016 season debut Sunday night in Pitt, per source. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: With Charcandrick West (ankle) out, Charles will get his first action of the season on Sunday night against the Steelers. There's no definitive word on Charles role, but its likely he will be limited and be in a backup role to Spencer Ware. Ware's value dips to RB2 level while the uncertainty makes Charles a FLEX dart throw.

Injury Jamaal Charles' Week 3 status uncertain
HC remains noncommittal on RB making season debut
By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 19, 5:25 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
When asked if he could rule out Jamaal Charles playing this week, however, HC Andy Reid said he could not. “No, I wouldn’t rule it out,” Reid said. “I just don’t have enough information for you to put it out there.” Charles missed the entire preseason and the Chiefs’ first two games, but he has been practicing the last two weeks on the scout team and warmed up on the field before Sunday’s 19-12 loss to the Houston Texans. Reid said Charles told him directly last week that he wasn’t quite ready to play. “Last week he wasn’t ready, he wasn’t quite there — but he’s getting there,” Reid said. (Kansas City Star)

FFToday's Take: Reid added that Charles told him "he felt like he made a lot of improvement last week". Spencer Ware is making the decision easier for everyone by amassing going over 100 total yards in each of the team's first two games. Owners should expect a committee of sorts when Charles gets cleared, with the 29-year-old likely to take over the lead role around midseason. Even if/when that happens, expect Ware to be no worse than a strong RB3/flex option.

Injury Jamaal Charles expected to return Week 3
Ware and West to handle rushing duties in Week 2
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Sep 18, 8:00 am

Kansas City Chiefs
Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles will miss Sunday's game against the Houston Texans but is expected to make his season debut in Week 3, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: When Charles returns he won't likely resume his workhorse role... at least in his first game back. Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West have proven to be capable replacements and have earned a role in the rotation. Expect to see a mixture of Charles and Ware in Week 3.

Injury Jamaal Charles not ready for Week 2
Spencer Ware to remain lead back, Charles "least healthy" of RBs
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Sep 13, 3:55 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
Ed Werder (@Edwerderespn) on Twitter: "#Chiefs could give Jamaal Charles, recovering from ACL surgery, another week, per source. He's least healthy of 4 RB, esp Spencer Ware" (Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Uh-oh. Charles owners can't like to hear this, as the Chiefs gave no indication the stud RB would be out multiple weeks heading into most August fantasy drafts. Ware remains the best bet to flourish as an RB1, and keep some RB3/flex viability once Charles eventually returns. This is shaping up as a week-to-week monitoring issue.

Injury Jamaal Charles "a stretch" to play in opener
Limited participant in practice Wednesday
By: Jake Gordon | Wed Sep 7, 6:58 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) The trend in the NFL over the past decade has been away from the bell-cow running backs of the 1970s and `80s, instead keeping fresh legs and healthy players on the field. As the Chiefs prepare for their season opener Sunday with a four-headed backfield of Jamaal Charles, Charcandrick West, Spencer Ware and Knile Davis, they are doing so with the understanding that all of them will get ample opportunities to make plays in Reid's offense It could be easier in the opener against San Diego with Charles still working his way back from last season's ACL surgery. He participated in practice Wednesday, but Reid has said it's "a stretch" that the four-time Pro Bowl running back will make it on the field this week. (AP)

FFToday's Take: With Charcandrick West (elbow) rejoining the team in practice today, the Chiefs could use up to four running backs against division rival San Diego on Sunday. Nevertheless, Spencer Ware's consistent production last season and this preseason has him lined up to receive the majority of the carries this weekend.

Injury Report: Jamaal Charles will not start Week 1
"If he plays, it won't be a lot."
By: Doug Orth | Thu Sep 1, 6:15 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
Adam Teicher on RB Jamaal Charles (knee) in week 1: "If he plays it won't be alot...he certainly won't be the starter." (Sirius XM NFL Radio)

FFToday's Take: Teicher is doubling down on Charles coming out of the gates slow after telling the world the 29-year-old back wasn't even taking reps with the starters in practice yet. It is possible the Chiefs are eyeing their Week 5 bye as a time to begin the transition from committee back to lead back, although that is far from a given. A case can be made that Charles is no better than a fourth-round value, Meanwhile, Spencer Ware can be considered as early as the sixth or seventh round.

Injury Chiefs bumping up Jamaal Charles' workload
KC reportedly giving RB work faster than expected
By: Doug Orth | Thu Aug 18, 5:30 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
Jamaal Charles expanding the workload, out there for 9 on 7 drills. Seem to be giving him work faster than expected. (Matt Derrick on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: This could mean any number of things, although it is never a bad development for an injured player to be able to be cleared to work more faster than expected. The most likely scenario remains Charles acting as the lead back with Spencer Ware mixing in every third series or so and stealing most of the goal-line work, at least early in the season. If he can stay healthy, patient owners should feel confident they'll have a high-end RB1 down the stretch.

Injury Jamaal Charles off PUP, practicing Tuesday
Chiefs RB should be ready for Week 1
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Aug 16, 9:32 am

Kansas City Chiefs
ESPN's Adam Teicher reports that Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles is practicing Tuesday. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Charles is recovering from an October ACL tear. He got in some work during minicamps, but he had yet to see any action in training camp after opening on the active/PUP. Charles will probably be limited for the rest of camp, but is likely going to be 100 percent before Week 1. He's actually being undervalued at this point.

Chiefs won't "limit" Jamaal Charles if healthy
Stud RB should continue to see majority of touches
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Jul 26, 9:40 am

Kansas City Chiefs
Chiefs beat writer Adam Teicher (@adamteicher) on Twitter: "Chiefs won't limit Charles if he's healthy and he's the same player he was before the knee injury." (Twitter)

FFToday's Take: There's no reason to believe that Jamaal Charles won't continue to be a solid option in all fantasy formats, but he's going to lose some touches this season. The emergence of Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West -- who combined for 1,256 total yards and 11 scores last season -- means his workload should go down. A 65-20-15 breakdown among Charles-Ware-West makes the most sense.
