More than ever, the world seems to want the sexy new thing, but when it comes to the Packers backfield, it may make more sense to love the boring old guy, if you consider a 28-year-old with just 790 career rushes “old.” With second-year player James Starks breathing life into the Packers’ moribund rushing attack during the playoffs, third-round pick Alex Green in tow, and Grant having suffered a season-ending Week 1 injury last season, the fantasy world is down on Grant’s prospects for the coming season, perhaps unreasonably so. While he is a poor pass catcher and will never be mentioned as one of the more talented running backs in the league, Grant rushed for nearly 3,400 yards and 23 touchdowns during a 38-game stretch from 2007 to 2009. The risk with Grant is that he is entering the final year of his contract and could end up splitting time with Starks as the Packers build for the future. Or, perhaps more likely, Grant will remain Green Bay’s dominant running back as he becomes motivated by the thought of a new contract, and the Packers will go with their most productive running back in an attempt to return to the Super Bowl. There’s nothing wrong with gambling on Grant in 2011.
FF Today's Take:Starks will play this weekend but will be in a timeshare with Ryan Grant and John Kuhn. He may not be a viable Fantasy option based on that fact.
Kevin Smith limited in practice-- Thu Dec 15 8:23 pm -- Lions RB still hopes to play this week
FF Today's Take:The fact that Smith practiced at all is certainly a positive sign. Coordinator Scott Linehan is confident that Smith will play against the Raiders. "He's making progress," said Linehan. "... We're very positive about him being ready to go." Smith is a top-20 fantasy option against a Raiders defense that allowed Ryan Grant's best game of the season last week.
James Starks misses practice Thursday-- Thu Dec 15 6:40 pm -- Packers RB will likely sit this week
FF Today's Take:Things aren't looking all that positive for Starks ahead of Green Bay's Week 15 game. Unless something drastic happens it will be Ryan Grant who sees the bulk of the carries out of the Packers backfield Sunday.
Starks injures ankle again-- Mon Dec 5 1:33 am -- Has now injured ankle in 3 consecutive weeks
East Rutherford, N.J. - Running back James Starks doesn't think he'll be out that long, but the Green Bay Packers might have to consider sitting him down for a while after he sprained his ankle in a third straight game. "I felt pretty strong, then I reinjured it," Starks said. "It's not a high ankle sprain, I don't think. I'll be fine. It'll just take a little rest."(Journal-Sentinel)
FF Today's Take:Starks will surely miss practice time this week. Even if he does play it is likely that his workload would be reduced so fantasy owners should consider keeping him benched for week 14. Ryan Grant and Brandon Saine split carries after Starks left and both figure to share the workload with or without Starks this week.
James Starks a game-time decision-- Tue Nov 22 7:30 pm -- Packers RB in danger of missing Thanksgiving game
FF Today's Take:Starks was limited in Tuesday's practice and there is an outside chance that he could play versus the Lions Thursday. However, owners need to prepare for the worst - even if Starks does play he will certainly won't be 100%. Ryan Grant would take over as lead back in Starks' absence.
Coach calls Starks injury a knee sprain-- Sun Nov 20 10:00 pm -- More testing to be done on Monday
The Green Bay Packers may be without their most productive running back for a while.
James Starks sustained what coach Mike McCarthy called a knee sprain in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 35-26 win over Tampa Bay at Lambeau Field.
(Green Bay Press-Gazette)
FF Today's Take:Whether Starks' injury is a sprain or something more serious, it will make it difficult for him to play on Thanksgiving day after a short week. Ryan Grant would see a few more snaps but wouldn't receive a huge fantasy boost given the passing nature of the Green Bay offense.
