2017 Outlook
Depth Chart
Consistency is invaluable in fantasy football and the Panthers' Greg Olsen has been the gold standard at the tight end position. Based on default FFT scoring, Greg Olsen has been the fourth best fantasy tight end for three consecutive seasons and a top ten option since 2012. A player with Olsen's numbers should be one of the easiest projections and safest picks for fantasy managers but 2017 offers a few variables to consider. The 32 year-old veteran wants to be paid like the game's elite and is threatening a hold out if Carolina doesn't cave to his demands. This could be a non issue well before you draft or it could linger into the regular season where other veteran players have sat out several weeks before returning to their team and having a mediocre fantasy year (Vincent Jackson comes to mind). Assuming a contract dispute doesn't jeopardize Olsen's fantasy season, he is easily one of the safest choices at the position. He's only missed two games in ten seasons so injury risk isn't of great concern. More importantly, he gets more chances than almost everyone else your opponent will start against you in a given week. The last time the NFL produced five tight ends with at least 120 targets apiece was 2009-a number Olsen has topped in each of the past three years. A decline will happen and there may be a dip in production if the team hands over one last big payday, but he's a "set it and forget it" fantasy starter with a fifth round ADP. What's not to like?

News From The Past 90 Days
Injury Greg Olsen not expected to play
Missed practice Wednesday and Thursday
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Dec 3, 8:00 am

Carolina Panthers
#Panthers TE Greg Olsen (foot) is not expected to play vs. the #Saints, source said, as he battles through soreness. There is no structural issue, no long-term issue, but Carolina is being cautious on the turf. Should be a short absence. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Olsen missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday then returned to a limited session on Friday. His absence will give Ed Dickson the start at tight end who's been mainly an afterthought in the offense even with Olsen out, registering only two serviceable fantasy weeks (Week 5 and Week 10).

Injury Decision on Olsen, McCaffrey coming Saturday
Both Panthers practiced today
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Dec 1, 1:00 pm

Carolina Panthers
A decision on the playing status of Pro Bowl tight end Greg Olsen (foot) and running back Christian McCaffrey (shoulder) will likely be made on Saturday. Both were at practice today. Coach Ron Rivera wouldn't elaborate. McCaffrey has been on the field the last two days. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: McCaffrey practiced on Thursday so it would be somewhat of a surprise if he's unable to play this week. Olsen missed Wednesday and Thursday resting his foot injury. The Panthers / Saints game kicks off at 4:25 PM eastern on Sunday.

Injury Greg Olsen misses practice Thursday
Foot injury
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Nov 30, 11:30 am

Carolina Panthers
Devin Funchess caught passes today (from Cam Newton). Christian McCaffrey full participation. No Greg Olsen. Thomas Davis worked on the side with trainers. (Jourdan Rodrigue on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Olsen isn't off to a great start this week after leaving last week's game early with pain in his foot. He reportedly didn't suffer an new damage but he appears to be a long shot to play against the Saints in Week 13. Veteran Ed Dickson would start if Olsen sits.

Injury Olsen could be limited in return
Carolina gets starting TE back in Week 12
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Nov 26, 9:10 am

Carolina Panthers
The comeback plan for Greg Olsen on Sunday involves a measured dose of work. "We're going to try to do it judiciously," Rivera said. "We've got to save him from himself and save him from us. You get a guy like that, you want to keep him out there as much as you can. But just knowing his conditioning and football shape isn't where it needs to be right now. ... You don't want to throw Greg out there and have him go 60 plays. So we really have to be smart." (NFL.com)

FFToday's Take: It makes sense to limit Olsen's snaps in his first action since Week 2. Even if he's limited he's still a viable fantasy option given the lack of options at the position. He has low-end TE1 appeal given his TD upside.

Injury Greg Olsen expected to return Week 12
Broken foot in Week 2
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Nov 14, 2:00 pm

Carolina Panthers
Ron Rivera said Greg Olsen is progressing very well and the plan is still for him to return for the Jets game. That could change, but Rivera likes where he is at. Said it's pretty exciting to get him back. (Steve Reed on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The Panthers have a bye this week, but should get their starting tight end back for Week 12. Olsen should immediately step into the starting lineup and be a top two target for Cam Newton along with WR Devin Funchess. Curtis Samuel is out for the year with an ankle injury.

Injury Greg Olsen can resume practicing next week
Panthers TE sorely needed by struggling offense
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Oct 24, 11:05 am

Carolina Panthers
Greg Olsen says he expects to test his surgically repaired foot on the field next week, when he’s eligible to resume practicing after going on injured reserve with a broken right foot in Week 3. (Charlotte Observer)

FFToday's Take: The Panthers desperately need Olsen -- a team leader and steady fantasy producer-- back from his injury, so this is great news. When he's healthy, it should increase the viability of Cam Newton and the entire offense.

Injury Greg Olsen making progress
"Doing good" two weeks after foot surgery
By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 2, 6:10 pm

Carolina Panthers
Panthers TE Greg Olsen out of the boot and progressing on schedule two weeks after foot surgery. (Joe Person on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Olsen will almost certainly be one of the Panthers' two "return" players from IR. He is eligible to begin practicing again in four weeks and could play in Week 10 if he doesn't experience a setback. With that said, the Panthers have a Week 11 bye, so they could choose to play it conservatively as well. If he can return by then, he could be a nice piece to a fantasy championship run for the aggressive yet patient owner who is otherwise sitting pretty four weeks into the season.

Injury Greg Olsen (broken foot) placed on IR
Panthers TE could return after eight weeks
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Sep 19, 3:05 pm

Carolina Panthers
Carolina Panthers (@Panthers) on Twitter: Greg Olsen has been placed on injured reserve after undergoing surgery on his broken right foot. (Twitter)

FFToday's Take: It's most likely a Jones fracture (fifth metatarsal) and it's an injury that heals with surgery but in a low blood flow area of teh foot, which is why it takes a while. This is bad news for Olsen owners, especially those who didn't have a plan B -- but there are some TEs available on the wire and Olsen could be back in time for the fantasy playoffs.

Injury Greg Olsen to have surgery, out 6-8 weeks
Broken foot
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Sep 18, 10:00 am

Carolina Panthers
Panthers TE Greg Olsen will undergo surgery on his broken right foot and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks, per @mortreport. Team will decide after surgery whether Olsen will go on IR with expectation to return later in season, per source. (Chris Mortensen on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Olsen was on the sideline during the second half on crutches. Ed Dickson is the next tight end on the roster but doesn't offer much upside. Olsen owners looking for replacements could target Vernon Davis (WAS), Zach Miller (CHI) and Ben Watson (BAL).
