After struggling in 2009 during his first year with the Bears, Cutler was expected to improve with the addition of offensive coordinator Mike Martz last season. Unfortunately for both men, Cutler failed to ignite the Bears passing game, although more than a little of the blame can be placed on the team’s porous offensive line and its mediocre crop of wide receivers. Cutler ended up as the 11th-ranked fantasy quarterback, courtesy of his 3,274 passing yards, 23 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. Interestingly enough, his passing yardage total dropped and he reduced his interception total by 10 from 2009, with his touchdown passes also decreasing by three—not exactly the result you would expect with Martz at the helm. The Bears offense actually came around when Martz eschewed his normal reliance on long passes in favor of more runs and a short passing attack. Heading into 2011, the Bears have improved the offensive line, but their wide receivers figure to once again put a restriction on just how effective their passing game can be. Basically, not much has changed in Chicago, and you shouldn’t expect much to change with Cutler. He’s a low-tier fantasy starter or a backup with upside. Drop him down a couple of notches in leagues that penalize for interceptions.
Cutler and Forte land on IR-- Tue Dec 27 6:20 pm -- Season officially over for Bears QB and RB
Bears placed QB Jay Cutler (thumb) and Matt Forte (MCL Sprain) on injured reserve, ending their seasons.
FF Today's Take:Officially eliminated from the playoffs this move is absoluteluy no surprise. Both are expected back to the Bears next season - Cutler is signed until 2013 and Forte is headed toward a franchise tag! They will both likely be hot comodities in next years' fantasy drafts.
McCown in, Hanie out-- Wed Dec 21 11:45 am -- Bears make a change at quarterback
The Chicago Bears announced on Wednesday that Josh McCown will start at quarterback on Sunday night against the Green Bay Packers in Lambeau Field. McCown, who was acquired on Nov. 23, replaced Hanie for the last two drives Sunday and completed just one pass and threw an interception.(ESPN)
FF Today's Take:The Bears haven't been the same after injuries to Jay Cutler and Matt Forte and all fantasy players should be avoided this week against the Packers.
Forte taking all measures in recovery-- Fri Dec 9 4:30 pm -- Bears RB using hyperbaric chamber to speed healing process
A player the Bears discarded could help his former team get an injured star back on the field sooner. Chargers defensive tackle Tommie Harris had no problem giving his "little brother'' Matt Forte access to his Gurnee home to use a $20,000 hyperbaric chamber stored in the basement. The unit, which aids in healing by enhancing oxygen levels to injured body parts, might help Forte expedite the recovery process after he suffered a Grade 2 sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee.(Chicago Tribune)
FF Today's Take:Forte is desperate to recover, not only to help the Bears' abysmal Jay Cutler-less offense, but likely to reinforce his value when he becomes a free agent this offseason. The extra measures he is taking to boost his recovery is encouraging, but he's still unlikely to return until week 17 when most fantasy leagues have already finished.
Jay Cutler's season over?-- Wed Nov 30 3:50 pm -- Could be out for another two months
Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler said Wednesday that he is taking his thumb injury "week by week" and he does not have a timetable for a return, adding "it could be that I'm done for the season." Cutler had three screws and two pins surgically inserted into his right thumb last week in Vail, Colorado, for an injury he sustained Nov. 20 against the San Diego Chargers. But doctors told Cutler it could take as many as 10 weeks for the pins to be removed, hampering chances of a return to action.(NFL.com)
FF Today's Take:Feel free to drop Cutler, particularly if you're in a league that ends after week 16. Earl Bennett's stock plummets as well, as he failed to show any chemistry with replacement quarterback Caleb Hanie last week.
Chiefs snag Orton leaving Bears McCown-- Wed Nov 23 6:55 pm -- Injury-riddled teams pick up veteran QBs
The Kansas City Chiefs claimed Kyle Orton off waivers from the Denver Broncos on Wednesday, preventing the Bears from reuniting with their former quarterback in their hour of need. Chicago, which is without Jay Cutler indefinitely to a broken thumb, appeared to be a likely landing spot for Orton, whom the Broncos suddenly sent packing Tuesday amid reports that Orton wanted to head back to the Bears, where he began his career. Instead, the 7-3 Bears will continue their playoff push with Caleb Hanie at QB and Josh McCown backing him up.(SI)
FF Today's Take:McCown, who has been used primarily as a stop-gap quarterback throughout his career, was definitely the Bears' second choice after Orton. Earl Bennett had been establishing himself as Chicago's reliable receiver in recent weeks, but Hanie immediately clouds Bennett's fantasy certainty for the rest of the 2011 season. However Orton, who has a tendency to throw a lot, could provide a minor boost to the value of Dwayne Bowe and Steve Breaston.
Jay Cutler to have surgery Wednesday-- Tue Nov 22 7:20 pm -- Thumb surgery expected to keep Bears QB out at least 5 weeks
FF Today's Take:The Bears hope that Cutler can return before the end of the regular season. It appears to be a hope and a prayer at this point. For Fantasy purposes, Cutler's season is over - start scouring the waiver wire for a replacement.
Cutler to have surgery on thumb-- Mon Nov 21 10:00 am -- Timtable for return still unknown
Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler will undergo surgery Tuesday on the thumb on his throwing hand after breaking it during Sunday's 31-20 victory over the San Diego Chargers. Bears coach Lovie Smith, who is scheduled to address the media at 1 p.m. ET, wouldn't speculate on how long Cutler will be out while speaking to WBBM on Monday morning. Sources said that he will likely miss the final six regular-season games, but the team is expressing hope that he can return before that.(ESPNChicago.com)
FF Today's Take:Cutler played his best game of the season prior to suffering the thumb injury late. Although a timetable for his recovery has not been established, Cutler will likely miss most of the remaining fantasy season. Caleb Hanie will take over for the Bears and is worth a monitoring in deeper two-quarterback leagues.
Cutler done for the season?-- Sun Nov 20 11:50 pm -- Reportedly broke right thumb
Bears quarterback Jay Cutler may have suffered a season-ending injury.
That’s the fear, according to two sources, because Cutler broke the thumb on his throwing hand in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 31-20 victory over the San Diego Chargers. Fox Sports was first to report that Cutler had injured his thumb around 8 p.m.(Chicago Sun-Times )
FF Today's Take:Cutler finished the game, but is scheduled for multiple tests this week. The Bears are expected to "err on the side of caution" according to a later report by the Sun-Times in hopes he can return later in the season. Caleb Hanie will be asked to step up in the meantime. Earl Bennett's fantasy stock figures to take a small hit with the loss of his college teammate under center.
Hester questionable for tilt with Lions-- Sat Nov 12 1:20 pm -- Bears WR battling a sprained ankle
Devin Hester was held out of practice again Friday because of his sprained left ankle and the wide receiver/returner is questionable for Sunday's game against the Lions at Soldier Field.
Hester wasn't spotted during practice the last two days, meaning he was likely inside Halas Hall getting treatment. (Chicago Tribune)
FF Today's Take:Hester's absence shouldn't have much of an effect on quarterback Jay Cutler. Cutler likes to spread the ball around, largely because of his receivers' inconsistencies, so it makes it difficult to pinpoint just which Bears' receiver will be the most valuable in fantasy from week to week. Earl Bennett emerged as the new front runner last week, registering five receptions for 95 yards and a touchdown in his first game since returning from a chest injury.
