Giants lock up 1st round RB Wilson-- Fri May 11 7:20 pm -- Rookie likely to back up Bradshaw
The New York Giants have agreed to terms with their first-round pick out of Virginia Tech, running back David Wilson. Wilson was drafted with the final pick in the first round by the Giants, who need somebody to replace Brandon Jacobs. Jacobs was released during the offseason, then signed by the 49ers. Wilson will compete with D.J. Ware, Da'Rel Scott and Andre Brown to back up Ahmad Bradshaw. (ESPN)
FF Today's Take:They may have won the Super Bowl last year but the Giants' rushing attack finished the season dead last with an average of just 89.2 yards per game. Wilson should help improve that total and could wrestle significant carries away from Bradshaw, but the Giants have become a pass first team which limits their rushers' value.
Blount will be upset if Bucs draft RB-- Wed Apr 4 6:20 pm -- Top-ranked RB Trent Richardson could be selected by TB
A lot of mock drafts have the Buccaneers selecting Alabama running back Trent Richardson. How would this sit with current running back LeGarrette Blount? "I would not like that pick," Blount said at Nike's unveiling of the new NFL uniforms in New York City. "I would definitely not be happy with that pick." Blount stressed that he wants to be a feature back, and when asked about the possibility of taking on a Brandon Jacobs-like role, he expressed, in no uncertain terms that he wouldn't want to simply be a goal-line guy.(CBS Sports)
FF Today's Take:What the Bucs do with the fifth overall pick in the draft will have a direct impact on Blount's fantasy value heading into the 2012 season. If they choose not to select Trent Richardson - who analysts are hailing as the only truly elite back in this year's draft class - Blount remains a relevant middle of the pack starting running back. If they do opt to select Richardson or even David Wilson or Lamar Miller in the second round, Blount will likely receive fewer touches and a more limited role.
49ers add Jacobs to backfield-- Wed Mar 28 12:30 pm -- Former Giant joins the 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers agreed to a one-year contract with former New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs, a league source said Wednesday. Jacobs is the second former Giant to join the 49ers this offseason, following receiver Mario Manningham, who signed a two-year contract last week.(ESPN)
FF Today's Take:Jacobs will backup Frank Gore in the running rotation while Kendall Hunter will remain the change-of-pace back. Expect Jacobs to get the majority of short yardage carries and vulture TDs away from Frank Gore.
Giants release Brandon Jacobs-- Fri Mar 9 8:00 pm -- RB looking for $2 million per season
The team released the bullish, Brandon Jacobs today after the sides were unable to agree on a reduction in salary for this upcoming season, the final year of a four-year contract Jacobs signed in 2009. Someone informed of the talks between the sides said the Giants wanted to slash Jacobs’ total compensation for this upcoming season from $5 million to $1.5 million with the chance to earn more through incentives. The person, who requested anonymity because the negotiations were to remain private, said Jacobs was looking for $2 million per season in a multiyear deal.(The Star-Ledger )
FF Today's Take:Jacobs will land elsewhere but it will be in a backup role. His fantasy value checks in at an RB4 level moving forward.
