2014 Outlook
Depth Chart
Running back Frank Gore has enjoyed a career full of tremendous consistency at a position with very little of that to offer. Gore is now a year past the 30-year-old mark that many believe to be the swan song for NFL running backs. He has still averaged at least 4.0 yards per carry in every season of his professional career. Although he saw his role reduced a bit in 2013 in terms of number of snaps, he still touched the ball more than 280 times for the third straight season. There is some concern that the 49ers backfield is becoming overcrowded with the likes of Kendall Hunter, Marcus Lattimore and Carlos Hyde, but Gore's is the one mouth that you know will be fed. Gore's realistic upside is probably the 1,200-plus yard, eight touchdowns that he has achieved in each of the past three seasons, but his downside is also not nearly as bad as many of the other backs who will be selected near him in drafts. If he can get even 250 touches, at just a measly 4.0 yards per touch, Gore would still crack 1,000 total yards and would almost certainly be in the position to take the vast majority of the team's goal line carries.

News From The Past 90 Days
Hyde draws praise for work ethic, smarts
Harbaugh compares rookie to Frank Gore
By: Doug Orth | Thu Jul 31, 5:30 pm

San Francisco
San Francisco HC Jim Harbaugh does not like to make comparisons. He often says someone gets diminished when two players are compared and contrasted. But, in this instance Harbaugh, made an exception. He praised running backs Frank Gore and Carlos Hyde in similar terms. Harbaugh spoke glowingly about Gore’s work ethic and understanding of the game. “Carlos gets football, understands football,” Harbaugh said, citing Roman. “It’s natural for him to understand the game, similar to Frank Gore. And we're seeing those things, and both are very good signs and bode well for us.” (CSN Bay Area)

FFToday's Take: This is a big step up for Hyde, whose work ethic was questioned up until last season at Ohio State. The second-round rookie is the frontrunner to win the backup job with Kendall Hunter out for the season and Marcus Lattimore being treated with kid gloves. Gore has been of an ironman since Harbaugh's arrival, but the 31-year-old showed signs of decline last season, so Hyde has a chance at redraft value this year.

Injury LaMichael James out with dislocated elbow
Expected to miss four weeks
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Jul 27, 8:00 pm

San Francisco
Running back LaMichael James was carted off the field Sunday after he suffered an injury to his left arm early in practice. NFL Network reported that James suffered a dislocated elbow and that he is expected to miss a month or so. (San Jose Mercury News)

FFToday's Take: The 49ers running back corps has taken a beating the last couple days. Kendall Hunter (ACL) will miss the entire season and now it appears James will miss a good chunk of training camp. Frank Gore and rookie Carlos Hyde continue to be the fantasy running backs to own in San Francisco with Marcus Lattimore (knee) being a wildcard. Lattimore remains on the non-football-injury list.

Injury Lattimore placed on non-football injury list
RB was cleared for full practice in offseason
By: Doug Orth | Thu Jul 17, 7:25 pm

San Francisco
RB Marcus Lattimore, who was cleared to resume full practice in the offseason, was one of six players declared on the non-football injury list to open training camp. The 49ers’ rookies reported to training camp on Wednesday. Lattimore was allowed to report with the rookies because he does not have an accrued year of NFL service after spending his rookie season on the NFI list due to a knee injury he sustained during his final season at South Carolina. (CSN Bay Area)

FFToday's Take: The NFI and physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) lists are procedural lists from which a player can be removed at any time to begin practice, so the Niners could just be playing it safe with Lattimore. However, it would have been a more positive sign to begin camp without limitations. Rookie Carlos Hyde continues to enjoy a clear lead over Lattimore in the race to be Frank Gore's handcuff.

Hyde has chance at "big" playing time in 2014
Has reportedly shined in offseason workouts
By: Doug Orth | Mon Jun 23, 3:55 pm

San Francisco
Carlos Hyde: The running back has shined out of the backfield as a runner and as receiver. I expect the Ohio State product to get a chance to get big playing time right away. He was considered a steal at No. 57 on draft night and he's still looking like one. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Frank Gore is 31 and tailed off badly as last season wore down, Kendall Hunter has been used primarily as a change-of-pace back and Marcus Lattimore is still being brought along slowly from the serious knee injuries he suffered in college. In other words, Hyde has a realistic shot to be a solid rookie contributor if the Niners are willing to cut back on Gore's workload and Lattimore isn't all the way back yet in another month.
