2018 Outlook
Depth Chart
Smith posted a career-best 23.2 fantasy points last season with the Chiefs as the No.4 fantasy quarterback, setting career highs in yards (4,042), passing touchdowns (26) and completions (341). Not only was Smith excellent in short and intermediate throws that he has been known for over his 12-year NFL career, but he also finished as the No.1 downfield passer in adjusted completion percentage according to ProFootballFocus.com.

The Chiefs rewarded Smith for his career-year by trading the veteran to the Washington Redskins for cornerback Kendall Fuller and a 2018 third-round draft pick. Smith replaces Kirk Cousins as the starting quarterback for the Redskins after Cousins left via free agency to join the Minnesota Vikings in a lucrative 3-year, $84 million deal.

From a fantasy perspective, it is difficult to project how Smith will fare in 2018 under Jay Gruden. Andy Reid tailored his offense around Smith with a quick passing offense that built upon Smith's strengths as a cerebral quarterback who often favored tucking and running with the ball instead of forcing the issue in tight coverage, as evident to the fact that Smith never threw more than eight interceptions in a season with Kansas City.

Conversely, Smith's penchant for avoiding risky throws limits his touchdown upside, as the former first overall pick in the 2005 NFL draft has never thrown for more than 26 touchdowns in a season. Smith will not kill you with bad throws and turnovers, but he will not be a week-winning difference maker compared to other quarterbacks going in the late rounds of drafts.

Smith is a safe late-round pick and a nice streaming option for owners who opt to wait on QB until the double-digit rounds in drafts this summer. However, due to the fact that Smith has fewer weapons in Washington and the unknown of how he will do under Jay Gruden, expecting another top-4 performance for Smith may be a far-fetched.

Injury Alex Smith diagnosed with compound fracture
Doctors also discovered spiral fracture in right leg
By: Doug Orth | Mon Nov 19, 7:00 pm

Washington Redskins
Alex Smith suffered a compound fracture - meaning the bone broke through his skin, per source. Trauma surgeons discovered Smith suffered a spiral fracture in his leg - defined as a long bone broken by a rotational force. Smith, 34, faces a lengthy rehab process to try to return. (ESPN - Adam Schefter)

FFToday's Take: He's done for the season, and the injury is serious enough that his career could be in question. At best, he's facing a long rehab process. Colt McCoy will start the rest of the way for the current NFC East leaders and be backed up by newly signed Mark Sanchez. It's hard to believe any Washington pass-catcher will benefit from this shakeup, although Jordan Reed had his best in the game of the season and slot receiver Trey Quinn flasehed in his NFL debut in Week 11.

Injury Redskins expected to sign Mark Sanchez
QB has ties to Redskins coaching staff
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Nov 19, 12:10 pm

Washington Redskins
The Redskins are expected to sign QB Mark Sanchez, per source. He'll serve as the back-up to Colt McCoy. (Field Yates on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Alex Smith suffered a broken leg in Week 11 leaving Colt McCoy as the starter moving forward. Sanchez hasn't played since 2016 but does have ties with OC Matt Cavanaugh, OL coach Bill Callahan and QB coach Kevin O'Connell who's worked with in previous seasons. Upcoming schedule for the Redskins include @DAL, @PHI, NYG and @JAX.

Injury Crowder out, Paul Richardson doubtful
Redskins thin at receiver
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Oct 19, 1:30 pm

Washington Redskins
Redskins WR Jamison Crowder out Sunday vs. Dallas and could miss a little time, coach Jay Gruden said. Receiver Paul Richardson is doubtful with his shoulder/knee. Running backs Adrian Peterson and Chris Thompson both are questionable as is Quinton Dunbar. (John Keim on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The Redskins are thin at receiver with Josh Doctson, Maurice Harris, Michael Floyd and Brian Quick being the options at the position for Alex Smith. Harris is likely to see the most snaps in the slot with Floyd playing the Z position for Richardson. None of these players are recommended fantasy options.

Injury Washington RBs injured on bad throws
Alex Smith's "hospitals balls" claim Chris Thompson, Adrian Peter
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Oct 9, 8:09 am

Washington Redskins
Two Washington running backs left Monday night’s 43-19 loss to the New Orleans Saints -- Chris Thompson and Adrian Peterson. Both injuries were the result of poor throws buy Alex Smith, who left the pass catchers vulnerable to big hits from defenders. Peterson suffered a dislocated shoulder in the first half and did not have a second half carry, finishing with six yards on four rushing attempts. He is scheduled to have an MRI on Tuesday. Chris Thompson was also shaken up, suffering a rib injury on an attempted two-point conversion in the fourth quarter. He finished with a team-high six receptions for 45 yards and added eight rushes for 17 yards. (Washington Post)

FFToday's Take: Kapri Bibbs filled in down the stretch and would assume a bugger workload were either back miss Week 6. Samaje Perine could also be activated.
