2014 Outlook
Depth Chart
Not known for being a particularly excellent red zone threat, Wes Welker lit the fantasy world on fire in 2013 when he started the season with nine touchdown receptions in his first eight games. Welker's incredible first half had many owners scrambling to acquire the former Patriot, but that kind of pace was simply unsustainable. Welker would go on to catch just one more touchdown in the second half of the regular season, while never eclipsing the 10 reception or 100 yard mark in any single game. Those numbers were skewed by the fact that he missed the final three weeks of the regular season, but it's still worth noting the incredible drop-off in production. Welker did return for the playoffs where he caught a total of 18 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown over three games, but that isn't enough for us to be highly optimistic about his fantasy outlook for 2014. Given the loss of Eric Decker, Welker should see more targets come his way in 2014 than he did in 2013, but there's a serious question of durability and simple degradation of physical skill at this point. Welker is 33 years old and while there's still gas in the tank, it would not be surprising to see him slowly start to fade away over the next couple of seasons. Still, Welker remains a top-20 receiver in standard scoring formats and a top-15 receiver in PPR formats. Drafting him could pay huge dividends, but make sure to have a reliable option on your bench should things start off looking like they did near the end of 2013.

Comment: Welker has suffered his third concussion in ten months. He may return Week 1 but Emmanuel Sanders is the safer draft pick.

News From The Past 90 Days
Welker unlikely to play this weekend
Expected to be reinstated soon
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Sep 12, 8:00 pm

Denver Broncos
Wes Welker is hours away from becoming resinstated as a Bronco. The 32 team union representatives approved the league's revised drug policy Friday afternoon. It's possible that by late Friday night — but most likely Saturday — Welker will have his four-game suspension rescinded and he would be placed on the Broncos' 53-man roster. It's also possible final approval by the NFL could take until Monday. (Denver Post)

FFToday's Take: Since the league has decided to changes the rules of their drug policy and apply these rules to players already suspended... after the season has started... it appears certain players will their suspensions reduced or wiped out all together. Welker is likely to be ready for game action in Week 3.

Welker, Gordon could have suspensions reduced
NFL, NFLPA could come to agreement on new policy soon
By: Doug Orth | Thu Sep 4, 8:35 pm

Cleveland Browns
Broncos WR Wes Welker is suspended for the first four games of the season, and Browns WR Josh Gordon is suspended for the entire season. Both players have already appealed, and lost. And yet there’s a chance that both players could still see their suspensions reduced. As Mike Florio reported on NBC, Welker, Gordon and potentially other players in the midst of suspensions could benefit from a new drug testing policy that the owners and players could agree upon soon. (Pro Football Talk)

FFToday's Take: Offseason use of amphetamines would move from the PED policy to the substance-abuse policy, which would allow Welker to get by without a suspension as a first-time offender. Another change is that the threshold to trigger a positive result on a marijuana test would rise. That would affect Gordon because his positive test was just barely above the NFL’s current threshold. What it means is that Welker could be available sooner than expected and Gordon is worthy of a stash.

Wes Welker suspended four games
Use of amphetamines
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Sep 2, 7:07 pm

Denver Broncos
Denver Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker has been suspended four games for use of amphetamines, sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Welker was excused from practice Aug. 20-21 to attend his appeal hearing, sources told ESPN Senior NFL Analyst Chris Mortensen. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Welker will have plenty of time to get through the leagues' concussion protocol. The Broncos have a bye in Week 4 so the earliest Welker could return to the field would be Week 6. Emmanuel Sanders becomes legit WR2 option and keep in mind, the Broncos used tight end Jacob Tamme in the slot during Welker's absence last season.

Injury Welker cleared for individual drills
Has yet to be cleared for full-contact practices
By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 1, 3:45 pm

Denver Broncos
On Monday, WR Wes Welker (concussion) returned to practice. He will participate in individual drills but has yet to be cleared to play in the team's season-opener Sunday night against the Colts, reports USAToday.com's Lindsay Jones. If all goes well, Welker will return to full-contact practices before he will be allowed to suit up against the Colts. The Broncos remain cautiously optimistic about those prospects. If Welker can't go, expect Emmanuel Sanders, signed this offseason, to step into his role. (CBS Sports)

FFToday's Take: Nine days ago, Welker suffered his third concussion in 10 months. From a fantasy perspective, the latest one turned Welker from a fairly safe WR2 in most formats into an incredibly high-risk WR3 whose career might be close to over. If he manages to play and avoid any more head trauma, he is a good bet for at least 80 catches. But that is a big if and one owners will have to weigh when drafting or trading for him.

Injury Wes Welker cleared to travel
Not cleared for contact
By: Jake Gordon | Wed Aug 27, 4:00 pm

Denver Broncos
ARLINGTON, Texas — Wes Welker was cleared to fly with the Broncos for their final preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys. Welker has not yet been medically cleared from his concussion to engage in contact, so he won't play in the game Thursday night at AT&T Stadium. (Denver Post)

FFToday's Take: Wes Welker (concussion) is making progress but it is too soon to know if he will be available for the team's opening game. He has reached the exercise stage of recovery but he must be cleared for contact by late next week to have a chance at playing week one. Additionally, the team has insisted that Welker will return when he is fully healthy and may elect to be cautious with the veteran receiver. Not knowing if Welker will play or how many snaps he would see should have his owners seeking out a backup plan for the start of the fantasy season.

Injury Wes Welker takes shot to the head
Being evaluated for possible concussion
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Aug 23, 10:15 pm

Denver Broncos
Wes Welker, 33, left in the second quarter after taking a hit to the head from Houston Texans cornerback D.J. Swearinger and was under evaluation for a concussion. (Denver Post)

FFToday's Take: Swearinger received a penalty on the play then was confronted by an angry Peyton Manning after the next play... a touchdown pass to Emmanuel Sanders. Welker suffered two concussions last season and any confirmed concussion diagnosis would likely lead to time missed.
