Last season, Brees wasn’t the same quarterback he was in 2008 and 2009, but he still produced another solid fantasy season, averaging 22.7 fantasy points per game in standard scoring leagues. He wasn’t as impressive in leagues that penalize interceptions, however, as he threw a career-high 22 picks. That can be blamed on two factors: the performance of the team’s receivers, and the situation at running back. Both Robert Meachem and Devery Henderson struggled last season, and injuries decimated the running back depth chart, with an undrafted rookie earning significant playing time. The rushing attack was addressed with the addition of Mark Ingram, and the team’s wide receivers should perform better in 2011, although lead receiver Marques Colston’s recovery from a knee injury remains a concern. No matter, as Brees and the Saints spread the ball around and Brees produces consistently, averaging 4,586 passing yards and 31 touchdown passes over the last five years. Hopefully he can cut down on those drive-killing interceptions in 2011. He’s a top-three fantasy quarterback, and that’s pretty much guaranteed if the past is any indication. He’s finished third, second, first, third, and second over the past five years.
Drew Brees hopeful about new deal-- Fri Jan 20 8:35 pm -- Saints QB optimistic he'll remain in New Orleans
Drew Brees said Friday he would be "beyond stunned" if he and the Saints are unable to agree on a contract extension during this offseason, echoing comments by coach Sean Payton this week. "My No. 1 priority, and it always has been this, is keeping our team together and making sure we have the right guys in the right positions to make a run at this for a long time," Brees said by phone from his offseason home in San Diego.(ESPN)
FF Today's Take:The NFL's new single season passing yards record holder is likely to reach a new agreement with the Saints, and should remain in the top tier of quarterbacks with Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers for the foreseeable future.
Saints OC interviews for Raiders HC job-- Mon Jan 16 5:50 pm -- Carmichael reportedly talking with Oakland brass
Saints OC Pete Carmichael reportedly has interviewed for the job as head coach of the Oakland Raiders. That comes after defensive coordinator Gregg Williams left to join Jeff Fisher with the St. Louis Rams.
After HC Sean Payton suffered a broken leg in a midseason game at Tampa Bay, he let Carmichael take over play-calling duties. Even after Payton’s leg healed, he let Carmichael continue to call the plays.(ESPN)
FF Today's Take:Carmichael's star rose quickly this season, especially after New Orleans posted 62 points against Indianapolis in a Sunday Night Football game. The Saints finished the season on fire, scoring fewer than 32 points just once after their Week 11 bye. Expect New Orleans to fight Oakland for Carmichael's services as he is a favorite of both Payton and Drew Brees.
Colston, Nicks hitting free agency?-- Sun Jan 15 8:25 pm -- Saints likely to franchise Brees
Drew Brees is a free agent, but we know he’s not going anywhere this offseason. So the Saints essentially have two options. They can strike a deal quickly with Brees or they can place the franchise tag on him to retain his rights while continuing to work on a long-term deal, like the Colts did with Peyton Manning last year.
G Carl Nicks and WR Marques Colston are both headed for free agency. Florio has explained previously Colston won’t take a hometown discount.(Pro Football Talk)
FF Today's Take:If the Saints cannot lock up Colston and Nicks, it goes without saying that New Orleans' offense would take a steep hit at a time it needs to be putting all of its resources into the defense. Nicks would likely be the hottest free-agent commodity available on the offensive line while Colston could easily be the top receiver available if Vincent Jackson, Dwayne Bowe and Wes Welker all get the franchise tag or re-sign with their teams.
Joe Flacco wants more credit-- Wed Jan 11 8:00 pm -- Ravens QB displeased with media
The Ravens' best sound bites on Wednesday media days are traditionally provided by linebackers Terrell Suggs or Ray Lewis, or running back Ray Rice. All three spoke to a large gathering of reporters today, but it was quarterback Joe Flacco who stole the show with uncharacteristic candor. "If you look at the teams that won, yeah you can look at the quarterbacks but that’s just because you guys, ESPN, everybody wants to pump them up as being the best quarterback that year. It’s really going to come down to what team is the best," Flacco said. "I’m sure if we win, I’ll have nothing to do with why we won according to you guys." (Baltimore Sun)
FF Today's Take:Flacco is a good quarterback, but he is far from ranking alongside upper-echelon NFL quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Drew Brees, all of whom have won the Super Bowl.
Lance Moore ruled out of wild card game-- Fri Jan 6 11:30 pm -- Saints WR plagued by hamstring injury
Drew Brees will have to face the Detroit Lions without one of his most reliable targets, as wideout Lance Moore was not able to comeback from a hamstring injury fast enough to be ready for Saturday's NFC Wild Card Game. Moore did not practice all week and then officially was ruled out for Saturday's game when the New Orleans Saints released their official injury report. (NFL.com)
FF Today's Take:Moore became one of quarterback Drew Brees' favorite red zone target toward the end of the season, so his loss could have an impact on the game. Moore hauled in five touchdown passes in his last five games.
Brees breaks NFL passing record-- Tue Dec 27 12:15 am -- Sets new mark on TD pass to Sproles
In the fourth quarter of Monday's 45-16 win over the Atlanta Falcons, QB Drew Brees broke Dan Marino's 27-year single-season passing mark with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Darren Sproles. Brees now has 5,087 yards passing for the season with one game remaining at home against Carolina.
FF Today's Take:While critics could point to the Saints adding insult to injury by being so aggressive with a 19-point lead and less than three minutes remaining in the game, it's hard to fault HC Sean Payton or the Saints' organization for wanting to break the record this week. Congratulations to Brees, who now owns two of the top three single-season passing yardage marks in NFL history.
Graham appears fine on Monday-- Mon Dec 12 11:15 pm -- Dealt with back spasms vs. TEN
Saints TE Jimmy Graham didn't appear hampered during the open locker room period with the media on Monday. Graham didn't talk with the media, but didn't seem like he was having trouble walking. Sean Payton said Graham was having treatment on his injured back Monday and that the Saints were lucky Graham was able to play Sunday against the Titans.(CBS Sports)
FF Today's Take:Graham's owners were lucky to get anything out of their TE on Sunday after the athletic TE could not get loose enough to start the game. The fact that Graham played in Week 14 bodes well for his status on Sunday and the fantasy fortunes of Drew Brees against Minnesota's injury-ravaged secondary.
