Jets sign WR Chaz Schilens-- Fri Mar 16 8:15 pm -- To add depth to receiving corps
Looking to add size and speed to their receiving corps, the New York Jets agreed to terms Friday with former Oakland Raiders wideout Chaz Schilens. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Schilens, along with Drew Stanton, became the Jets’ first free-agent acquisitions. He also drew interest from the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers. Despite only 72 receptions in four seasons, Schilens will get a chance to compete for Plaxico Burress’ old starting job. The 6-foot-5 Burress, who tied for the team leader with eight touchdown catches last season, is a free agent and unlikely to return. (ESPN)
FF Today's Take:If his supporting cast is any sign of things to come, controversial quarterback Mark Sanchez could be in for another rough year in 2012. Schilens is a decent receiver but he doesn't have the red zone reputation or athleticism that Burress does.
Jets want Braylon Edwards back-- Wed Feb 29 6:00 pm -- With Plaxico Burress likely departing
Rex Ryan left little doubt he wasn’t pleased with the Jets’ inability to stretch the field during their lost season. He may be reuniting with a familiar face to help remedy that situation. The Daily News has learned that the Jets are interested in bringing back free agent wide receiver Braylon Edwards, who was an integral piece in Gang Green’s success in 2009 and 2010. Edwards signed a one-year, incentive -rich deal with the San Francisco 49ers as a free agent before the 2011 season, but was waived before Week 17 and is free to sign with anyone.
(New York Daily News)
FF Today's Take:Despite failing to haul in a touchdown this past season, Edwards has a reputation of being a reliable red zone target and hauled in 16 touchdowns in 2007. Five years younger than Plaxico Burress, Edwards would appear to be an adequate replacement for the Jets' touchdown leader from 2011.
Burress wants to play for the Eagles-- Wed Feb 29 5:50 pm -- Towering WR hopes to take his talents to Philly
Plaxico Burress says the Jets want him back, but the veteran receiver has his eyes on a team farther south on I-95. In an interview with a Philadelphia radio station, Burress made it clear he would love to play for the Eagles. “Nothing else would make me happier,” Burress told 97.5 The Fanatic. “Obviously, coming to Philadelphia and instituting myself to the offense it just adds a unique dynamic to what’s already in place.” Burress is a free agent after playing last season with the Jets, who gave him a one-year, $3.017 million deal after his release from prison.
(New York Post)
FF Today's Take:Six-foot-five Plaxico Burress would certainly add some height to the Eagles' receiving corps, but they are currently well-stocked at the position. That said, it is looking more and more like the 34-year-old will not be returning to the New York Jets next season.
