| Rex Burkhead back at practice|
Eligible to play in Week 13
By: Doug Orth | Fri Nov 9, 1:35 am
|Welcome back to practice, RB Rex Burkhead. Burkhead (neck) is eligible to play on Dec. 2 vs. Vikings. This means Burkhead takes the Patriots’ second and final designated to return IR spot. (ESPN - Mike Reiss)|
FFToday's Take: Good news for Burkhead, who has struggled to stay healthy as a Patriot. Owners of Sony Michel and James White have a right to be less excited, as both players have repeatedly shown they can deliver RB1 production when there isn't a third chef in the kitchen. Assuming Burkhead returns, he is a decent bet to ding the value of Michel slightly and steal enough work from White to make him more of an RB2. Burkhead is easily worth a stash if owners can find the room.
| Sony Michel expected to return for Week 10|
Rookie RB should be on the field for Pats-Titans tilt
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Nov 6, 1:02 pm
|Adam Schefter on Twitter: "After missing the past two games with a knee injury, Patriots’ RB Sony Michel is likely to return Sunday vs. Titans, per source. Just needs a good week of practice with no setbacks, but on track." (Twitter)|
FFToday's Take: Well, there you have it. The great Cordarrelle Patterson experiment seems to be over, and Michel will regain his rightful place alongside James White in the Pats backfield. Michel looks like a go for Week 10 and can be safely inserted as as RB3/flex play, with low-end RB2 upside.
| Gronkowski, Michel iffy for Sunday night|
Hard to trust in Week 9
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Nov 4, 9:00 am
|Patriots will test TE Rob Gronkowski (back) and RB Sony Michel (knee) pregame, but there is concern about whether both players listed as questionable will be able to play tonight vs Packers, per sources. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)|
FFToday's Take: Given the Sunday night kickoff it will be difficult for fantasy owners to trust Gronk and Michel in lineups in Week 9. WR Cordarrelle Patterson saw 10 carries (38 yards) last week with Michel inactive.
| Sony Michel limited in practice, Questionable|
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Nov 2, 2:00 pm
|Patriots list 13 players as questionable, with WR Cordarrelle Patterson (neck) added to the list as a limited participant Friday. (Mike Reiss on Twitter)|
FFToday's Take: Sony Michel was limited in practice all week and is listed as questionable. The Patriots play Sunday night so hopefully we'll get some concrete information on Sunday morning about his status. He'll be in the RB2 mix if he's cleared to play.
| Michel's knee injury not considered serious|
Could still miss time
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Oct 22, 1:10 pm
|Sources: #Patriots RB Sony Michel’s knee injury is not considered serious following his MRI. His timetable isn’t clear, but this is pretty good news for their impressive rookie runner. He still could miss time, but if he does, it may not be much. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)|
FFToday's Take: Michel got his leg twisted early in Week 7 but it appears he escaped a serious knee or ankle injury. We'll have to wait for further details on how much time he will miss. James White and Kenjon Barner handled the rushing duties after Michel left the game. Upcoming schedule for the Pats includes @BUF, GB, @TEN, bye.
| Rex Burkhead headed to IR|
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Sep 26, 11:55 am
|BREAKING: The #Patriots will be putting RB Rex Burkhead (neck) and rookie LB Ja'Whaun Bentley (unknown) on IR today, per league source. (Jim McBride on Twitter)|
FFToday's Take: Burkhead was a pre-season favorite of the fantasy community with and ADP in the 6th round at RB28. Now, Sony Michel, James White and Kenjon Barner now makeup the Patriots running back depth chart with Michel being the back to own in most leagues.
| Sony Michel not expected to play|
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Sep 9, 8:10 am
|Patriots’ RB Sony Michel, listed as questionable for opener against the Texans due to a knee injury, is not expected to play today, per source. More on Sunday NFL Countdown at 10 a.m. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)|
FFToday's Take: Michel has been a longshot to play Week 1 after missing most of August with a knee issue that required a clean up procedure. Expect to see plenty of Rex Burkhead and James White in the backfield for New England both are viable fantasy plays in Week 1.
|Patriots release RB Mike Gillislee|
Should catch on with another team
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Sep 1, 1:23 pm
|The Patriots have released Mike Gillislee, per source. As it turned out, they sat him against the Giants as a courtesy to prevent an injury before this transaction. (Jeff How on Twitter)|
FFToday's Take: Gillisle was part of a crowded running back group that includes Rex Burkhead, Sony Michel, James White and Jeremy Hill. With Gillislee's release, it appears the veteran Hill has made the team.
| Sony Michel in doubt for Week 1|
Rookie recovering from early August knee drain
By: Doug Orth | Thu Aug 30, 5:40 pm
|Per Jeff Howe of The Athletic: “There has been a constant sense of optimism surrounding Rex Burkhead’s readiness despite a slight tear in his knee, but that sense hasn’t been as strong around Sony Michel, as sources maintained to The Athletic earlier this month the start of his regular season was in jeopardy due to a knee drain that was caused by a meniscus issue.” (The Athletic - Jeff Howe)|
FFToday's Take: As the New England backfield turns. Burkhead was overprotective of Burkhead this month because the Patriots supposedly have big plans for him. That could and should still be the case. Michel was either supposed to fill the Dion Lewis role in this offense or be the next Alvin Kamara, depending on who you ask. Owners are advised to treat both Burkhead and Michel as high-upside flexes or RB3 until further notice.
| Sony Michel returns to practice|
Pats RB coach likes what he sees
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Aug 28, 1:00 pm
|RBs coach Ivan Fears on rookie Sony Michel: "Just what we expected. He was progressing well. I was really happy when we got the pads on, and got a chance to see him run a bit. It looks like he's going to be what we expected to be. ... I expect him to come back ready to go." (Mike Reiss on Twitter)|
FFToday's Take: Michel returned to practice on Monday and appears to progressing nicely. He had a clean up procedure on August 4th and has been out of action ever since. It remains to be seen what kind of role, if any, the rookie will have in Week 1.
| Sony Michel back at practice|
First football activity since injuring knee on Aug. 1
By: Doug Orth | Mon Aug 27, 5:00 pm
|Progress on the injury front for the Patriots: Rookie RB Sony Michel makes his first appearance on the practice field since Aug. 1. (ESPN - Mike Reiss)|
FFToday's Take: The Patriots' backfield is often about as clear as mud, and that seems to be even more the case this year. Michel was reportedly struggling in camp even before his injury and three weeks away isn't going to help him learn the Patriots' complicated offensive system any faster or close the gap on Rex Burkhead regardless of his first-round draft pedigree. Michel has massive upside, but whether it has a chance to be realized in 2018 is another story.
