Rookie Mike Williams (6'4", 218) has a frame perfect for a quaerterback like Philip Rivers who loves to give his players a shot in one-on-one coverage. Williams joins the team with a similar athletic makeup to former Chargers receivers Malcom Floyd and Vincent Jackson, but with seemingly more upside. He scored 11 touchdowns in Clemson's National Championship season this past year, proving that he is one of the most dominant red zone threats to come into the league in quite some time.

Williams does need to work on his route running which could cause him to be more volatile and thus less valuable especially in PPR formats, but the big concern about him at the moment is his health. He's already dealing with a herniated disc in his back which has not allowed him time to acclimate himself with the offense, and particularly with Rivers. Be careful if he is still missing significant practice time in late-July or August. The talent is here, but the injuries are worrisome as he also suffered a neck injury in college that caused him to miss most of the 2015 season. He's arguably the top option among dynasty wide receivers this season, but Williams enters into a crowded offense with quite a few mouths to feed. He's likely the most physically skilled pass catcher in the offense, but he may struggle to show that early in his career until other players in this offense move on.

Injury Mike Williams eyeing October debut?
First-round WR making progress from back injury
By: Doug Orth | Mon Aug 14, 7:45 pm

The Chargers are eyeing an October debut for first-round pick WR Mike Williams. The Clemson product, who is recovering from a herniated disc in his back from the spring, has been sprinting on the treadmill and on the practice field. By all accounts, he's making solid progress as the team has used rest and rehab, rather than a surgical option. Los Angeles is also being cautious. That's why, according to several sources with direct knowledge of the situation, the plan is for Williams to play in October. How it happens will depend on what unfolds over the next three weeks until it's time to make a roster decision on Sept. 2. ( - Ian Rapoport)

FFToday's Take: Williams suffered the injury in the team's first spring practice and has been sidelined ever since, so there is little chance he is going to be able to make a rookie-year impact. With that said, his size (6-4, 218) will make for an inviting red zone target on an offense that should be among the best in the league. He can go undrafted in most leagues, but he is one to keep an eye on if he can start playing by October.

Injury Mike Williams disputes severity of back injury
"That was some false information being released"
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Jul 23, 7:00 am

Los Angeles Chargers first-round pick Mike Williams is denying reports that he might need season-ending back surgery. "I'm good. Everything good. The back situation. That was some false information being released," he said. "I don't know who released it but everything is good." (

FFToday's Take: Williams sat out the off-season program after suffering a herniated disc in his back. Reports last week suggested he might need surgery to correct the problem. How much he participates in training camp will give us a better indication of his true health. He's on the backburner as a potential WR5.

Injury Mike Williams not a candidate for surgery?
Rookie WR's herinated disc "improving"
By: Doug Orth | Thu Jul 20, 7:00 pm

Surgery was on the table 3-4 weeks ago (for Mike Williams' herinated disc). Two sources with direct knowledge say it is NOT on the table now. Williams is improving. ( - Ian Rapoport)

FFToday's Take: The Tyrell Williams bandwagon has hit its first speed bump. Mike Williams sounds like he is destined to open training camp on the active/PUP list, but he may be able to go Week 1 after all. He wasn't necessarily expected to make a huge rookie-year impact anyway, so owners in smaller leagues can probably leave on the waiver wire for now.

Injury Chargers Mike Williams may need back surgery
Second epidural given for herniated disk
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Jul 19, 3:27 pm

The Los Angeles Chargers are still hoping to avoid it, but first-round pick Mike Williams might need back surgery on his herniated disk that would end his rookie season, league sources tell ESPN. The team still is hoping that Williams will respond positively to the second epidural but also knows there's a real chance he will not and his rookie year will be over before it begins. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Bad news for the rookie wideout. It sounds like the best case scenario is for him to get back on the practice field at some point during training camp. Even if he does, he's missed so much time it would be a minor miracle for him to contribute in any meaningful fantasy way in 2017. Tyrell Williams and Travis Benjamin would be the biggest benefactors if Mike Williams were to miss significant time.

Injury Rookie WR Mike Williams out until training camp
Mild disc herniation in back
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Jun 6, 3:07 pm

Chargers first-round pick, WR Mike Williams, is expected to miss remainder of offseason program with a disc injury in his back, per source. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Bad news for the Chargers rookie wideout who has missed all of the team's off-season workouts with a back injury. It's possible his back could quiet down before camp but this is definitely a red flag for fantasy owners considering investing in the rookie. We should get a better idea of his status once training camp begins in late July.
